RUMOR: Stephen Ross wants Jon Gruden AND to keep Jeff Ireland

Why are you following that guy?

I'm sick of "sources" who are in essence nobodies who love putting stuff out there for guys like the OP to post as fact. It's pure BS and speculation. I guarantee you that no-one in Davie knows what Ross is going to do, especially some punk with a twitter account. He leaves straight for New York after the games.

I believe Ross knows EXACTLY whats going on, how fans really feel, and what he needs to do to fill the stadium. After the Harbaugh fiasco, do you think he's just let everyone in on what he's doing? Not bloody likely!

If the "source" simply said he was enamored with Ross I'd believe it. Adding Ireland to the mix is unproductive. Because he if really wants Gruden, he'll let Gruden pick his guy.

If you fire Sparano, imo you have to fire Ireland as well.

With that said, there are quite a few people lately that do not agree with that thought. In fact, just in the past week, two well known people Drew Rosenhaus and Adam Schefter have come to Ireland's defense and have made a case that he should stay even though Sparano is/will be gone.

Rosenhaus called him one of the most knowledgeable GM's in the league and that everytime he talks to him he comes away extremely impressed. I was listening to an interview on WQAM's website from last week with Adam Schefter, and when the host said that it was "likely" that Ireland would be fired Schefter said not so fast. He gave some praise and brought up the comparison of Martin Mayhew with the Lions. Schefter cited that Mayhew was Matt Millen's right hand man and Lions fans were pissed that the organization kept him. Turns out it was a very good move not to dump him.

We also have to keep in mind that up until last September that Ireland was not calling 100% of the shots in making roster decisions and draft picks. Even this year he is not 100% in control because Sparano has some say on the roster also(hello Colombo signing). Is Ireland perfect? No. Should the Dolphins go in a different direction? Possibly. Is it a disaster if he stays on in some capacity? I don't think so. Someone like Gruden is not going to come here without having some say on who the team signs and drafts, so it is not like Ireland is going to have full control. As many have said, this past draft is looking like it might be the best one overall since he arrived in 2008. A Gruden/Ireland or hopefully a Cowher/Ireland could work.

Ireland has full control over personnel written into his contract. Mayhew didn't.

As for Rosenhaus... seriously, who the **** cares what he thinks? Drew makes Miami his home and signing as many Dolphins players as he can his business. If a new GM comes to town, a whole bunch of Drew's clients stand to get cut and replaced by guys not on his roster.

He's worse than simply being an idiot. He's deceitful on purpose.

This doesn't surprise me, because Ross is totally clueless. So prepare to bring Gruden in, with all the buzz, and for a follow up season of mediocrity because Jeff Ireland as usual will have brought in the WRONG players.

interesting point of view...does anyone know why gruden and tampa parted ways when they did??? i'm interested in knowing if there's any dirt on him...i do know that gruden is a players coach at least it looks that way to me...when you hear him commentate games everyones a damn pro bowler it seems if you listen to him talk...and i seem to recall him having a real thing for long in the tooth veterans on his team...

The long in the tooth Vet thing came from him reviving Joey Galloway and Chris Hovan in Tampa as well as bringing in people who knew his system to Tampa like Tim Brown, and Charlie Garner. Jeff Garcia also showing signs of life as a starter too.

But he was fired simply because the Tampa owners wanted to rebuild. Gruden and GM Bruce Allen did not want to do a complete rebuild (the team missed the playoffs by one game, and had won the division 2 of the previous 3 seasons) and felt that they were real close. So the owners just fired both and decided to start from scratch. Originally, Gruden was going to be HC with Raheem Morris being promoted to DC since Monte Kiffen was going to Tennessee. Since they decided to fire Gruden since he wasn't down with the rebuild, they promoted Morris to head coach since many felt his youth was the right way to go for a rebuilding process.

As for Ireland. I like him well enough as I feel he does have a nice eye for talent in the draft. If this is truly the first year he had total control of the draft it was not a bad draft at all. Maybe he just needs to get away from the Parcells stench and pick his own coach to work with

This whole situation is a moving target and will depend on how the season plays out.
If we finish with 1-3 wins then keeping Ireland is indefensible.
Something greater than 6 wins and there may be some traction in people wanting to keep Ireland.

Sparano's line has already been drawn as he has been told that it is playoffs or bye bye. He will collect a paycheck for a year and then move back to the coordinator ranks.

Cowher will only come in if he as some sort of assurances that he will have control. He has too much leverage. I am not necessarily enamored with the emperor Cowher idea. His success came after a very long tenure in one of the strongest frachises in the NFL. How much of their success was Cowher?

Give me a solid executive(Russ Ball) that will run things and put the pieces in place, whomever they may be.

Ross is no fool. His frantic pursuit of Harbaugh coupled with Harbaugh's immediate success in SF shows that someone is giving him sage advice on football admin talent.

Tell me why Ross is clueless?
He is investing millions of his personal fortune to make this thing work. His job is to not be clueless.
He went after the right guy Habaugh but missed out.
He didn't fire Sparano during the lockout because there was total uncertainty.
He vetoed a bad trade for Orton becuase it would have saddled the future.

If I remember correctly, Cowher was the HC & GM in Pittsburgh so I would say that after his long tenure most all of their success was due to Cowher. I also think that a lot of the Steelers subsequent success was due to Cowher as well. With that being said, I am not too keen on having the HC fill any more roles than just HC. I am adamantly opposed to a HC/coordinator, which is my concern with Chucky...he may want to be HC and OC. Our team is such a mess that I think we need a GM & HC to steer this sinking ship away from the storm. It will be all that they can do in their respective roles to keep their heads above water. If we keep Ireland and get Chucky as coach, I would be happy regardless of who has "Final" say. I think that Ireland has had his hands tied much of his tenure with the Fins and will give him a pass on the crap free agents...for now. With that being said, if we can Ireland as a condition of signing a top HC it would not bother me as long as a solid GM is brought in to accompany the coach.

Not exactly Kevin Colbert took the GM position from Tom Donohoe in 2000 following two straight losing seasons by Cowher coached Pittsburgh
Cowher was there from 92 to 06.
The strong run started after that and culminated in the Super Bowl.
No one knows how much of it was Cowher or Colbert or owner Rooney. Probably a combination of all of the above. I do not think that the success is simply a result of Cowher.

Cowher was never GM in Pittsburgh. He had Terry Donahue and Kevin Colbert in Pittsburgh. The rumors have been that Cowher would demand that one of his guys from Pittsburgh be hired as GM or VP of football Operations. The rumored names were the Pitt GM "Very Underrated" Kevin Colbert or the Director of Business and Administrations Omar Kahn.

Can we poach an executive for a lateral position?
Don't get me wrong I would LOVE to get Kevin Colbert.

A Cowher/Colbert combo would be as solid an option for Miami to rebuild as possible.

If their contract is up sure. Most organizations will let their execs talk to other teams if they want to, Though I do think sometimes you have to add a title. Jeff Ireland was the VP or Pro and College Scouting with Dallas before becoming our GM and he was a damn good scout for the Cowboys. This past offseason when Tuna left his position, Ireland had final say written into his contract

Ixnay on both:

the remaining stench surrounding Parcells needs to be exorcised completely and aside from the fact that loads of players couldn't stand Chuckie, with Simeon Rice calling him a "scumbag" the so-called self-anointed "QB Guru" has never developed a young phenom; regardless of whether its Luck, Barkley, Jones, Foles, Griffin, Moore, or whomever, we're gonna have one fersure, as the hope of our future. Standing pat with Matt Moore or Henne is more his style as evidenced by eking one good year out of Brian Griese and resussitating Rich Gannon.

New GM (who's Ozzie Newsome's assistant?) and Cowher (although he's destined for the Giants), Fisher or an up and coming hotshot please.
