Ryan's fumbling issue - Hand size?

Hoops have you noticed RT has started dropping the ball around his waist when he moves in the pocket? I am seeing more frequently when RT moves in the pocket he is dropping the ball around his waist opposed to keeping it up.

I've noticed that too and wondered who was messing with his mechanics. Is there a different way to hold the ball that would minimize the chances of fumbling. Ideally something that doesn't involve bungy cords.

Well ideally you want the ball around your right shoulder pad for quick release and protection. It's easier to secure on contact and gives you more of a chance to recover it if you are hit. He doesn't do it every play but more and more I have been seeing him drop the ball to his waist line. I think he did it on the buffalo sack fumble but honestly I was drunk so I'm not sure.

I was told that the key to Favre's long term success was the sheer size and strength of his hands. A lot is made about height, arm length, 40 yard time, football intelligence, etc but it sounds like Ryan was blessed with small hands. That doesn't mean that he can't be a success in the NFL, the same way that Russell Wilson is under 6'. But it means he could be more vulnerable than those with bigger hands.

So based on your response you do not see any correlation between number of fumbles ad hand size? Just a consequence of getting hit hard? Not arguing, just trying to understand.

hand size with tannehill no i do not see an issue...

i havent noticed that but i can tell you that on the buffalo fumble where tanny tried to step forward and clabo is beaten to the inside there's nothing he could have done there he's got his arm ready to coil but the hits on that throwing arm...nothing he could do...and this one from the backside where the defender comes around his body also to the front with his arm nothing he can do...

i think the fumble thing is getting out of hand...some of these plays i mean what can he do...you have him with 2 hands on the football the ball takes longer to come out and you lose that quick release...i don't know how you coach it different when a guys scanning the field before he begins his release

he may be holding his throwing arm a little lower lately cause of a shoulder injury he got in week 3...i definitely think he's more hurt than we are lead to believe...probably a labrum injury of some kind

Might be nothing but seems like sometimes when he starts to move up in pocket he drops the ball a hitch so to speak

He needs to put two hands on the ball while waiting to deliver. It's something QB's are taught from peewee ball. If he's into his motion then gets hit, sh** happens. Until then, he needs to grab that damn ball like he's grabbing Lauren's headlights. High and firm.

i think that's kind of natural for the ball to drop a little when your legs get wider...part of balance imo...your arms naturally drop...i guess if you want him stepping forward with 2 hands on the ball that might help but again you lose that nanosecond on the release...

i don't think there's much i would change other than climb the pocket when you can and use your legs more to make little lateral movements and find space to set your feet and fire...he's not a natural in a muddy pocket

I don't disagree with this, except that, when the pocket is muddy, he has to adjust and defend the ball. That usually means high and tight.

i would however continuously work with him on footwork drills and contact on his arms etc as he moves around the pocket...drill him to death on his footwork his lateral agility his peripheral vision and finding space etc...it can get better but it's gonna take work...lots of it...

you notice this year there aren't as mnay tipped balls at the los...he's finding lanes to throw in better but other parts of his game ie pocket handling need work...

Brady fumbled when he got hit from behind too.

Hmmmm...

Keep up guys, I know it's tough for you, but at least try!

Lol. I think all this fumbling thing is nit picking. If he gets more protection he won't get hit as much thus eliminating fumbling. I think this is a simple fix. For gods sake he did play WR and I didn't hear about him always fumbling as a WR.

Hadn't thought of that but it makes sense. My only concern is that at some point a statistical anomaly becomes a trend and whether that perception might influence how he reacts in the pocket. I hope he's strong enough mentally to weather this.

you show me a qb thats got the ball "high and tight" in the pocket and i'll show you a qb that isn't going thru his progressions and reading the field

I doubt it. He didnt fumble this much last year.
If I recall correctly there was some concern on this board related to his hand size at the time that RT was drafted. Could this be contributing to his issue with fumbles? I've noticed that some of his fumbles occur with no actual contact with either the ball or his hand. Ultimately it would be optimal if he could learn how to feel the pressure coming and turtle up but he doesn't seem to have that skill set yet (compare with Brady yesterday where he almost always seems to senses pressure coming even if he can't see it). I don't see a glove as an answer but what other options are there?
