Saban needs to control his media mouth

I think what a lot of you are missing is this. Saban doesn't give a damn if you are a #1 overall pick or the very last pick of the draft. He expects the same from everyone in terms of work ethic and commitment.

I have a feeling that what it has done is kicked Vickerson into gear. Look at what Kevin Carter is saying about the guy.

Two excellent points here. Once you are signed, your draft position becomes irrelevant. You are on the team to do a job. A coach does a disservice to the team -- and to the individual -- when he lowers his expectations of work ethic based on where the individual is drafted.

I was also intrigued by the possibility that Saban's comments are what have raised Vicerson's play to a level worthy of Carter's praise.

.......... See, you just completely strip yourself of any kind of meaning when you make stupid f*ckin' comments like that. If I had meant that I would have said that......... you act like I'd be afraid to say it to some nobody like yourself. Get over yourself man.

Wow man.......... I make one comment and suddenly Wanna-schmuck comes back into the argument.

According to whom? Kevin Carter, Vickerson's teammate in the trenches, seems to think they guy is playing great and obviously thought opposite of Manny. Yet Saban lumped the two together, illegitimately it appears.

How man plays has he made in a GAME? I've seen both preseason games and have not even heard his name called. Yeah he can do it in practice, and so has Manny, in flashes. Plays in practice don't win you any games in the NFL.

You think a 7th rounder and a late supplemental draftee are going to magically light up in their very first training camp? I'm sorry man, that's wishful thinking. It takes time.

Time? On who's watch? Why should he wait. Like I said, Saban needs them NOW. They have a golden opportunity and neither guy has responded in a game situation. Late 3rd and 4th quarter and these guys are on the field getting their ***** handed to them. Saban sees the talent they have or else he would not care and just cut them. If this does not motivate them, nothing will. This is the NFL. It's a job and you are expected to produce.

When I was in college, Ed Reed came back one summer to talk to some of the juniors who were still on the team. I remember him specifically telling some of them that the NFL is a JOB. It's not like it is in college. It's a legit 60 hour a week job plus the game on Sunday. If you want to have fun, stay in college. If you wanna work, go to the NFL. It's no picnic man and it shouldnt be.

I think Sabn knows exactly what he's doing. His gamble on this making them better players may or may not pay off, but make no mistake ... this is very calculated behavior.

Rather Bill Parcellsian. (?)

I agree. He's a successful motivator that knows what he's doing. Why not find out if the developmental players have the toughness you're looking for? Rather than waste time on them over the next couple of years.

Originally I thought Saban was being a little harsh about the whole trout thing, but I think I would rather have Saban call these guys out to light a fire under their a**, rather than pampering them and let them continue thinking that they are getting by. If the player doesn't respond by elevating his playing level, then he shouldn't be on the team. Besides, I doubt that any one of the players question where they stand with the coach in regards to their performance because Saban tells it like it is.

Just my $0.02

Regards,

I think what's happening is that both of them are kicking *** in practice. I know they are. Vickerson especially. Manny has shown flashes of greatness according to Jason Cole. But then when the games come, the play like school girls!! That has to be irritating as hell to Saban. He knows they have "it".

I'm not for professional atheletes being babied.

.............. but not for a 7th round draftee and a 5th round supplemental draftee. I could understand if we had drafted Marcus Spears in the 1st round and Saban used that tactic on him.
Come onnnnnnnnn! Dude, these are grown men. There are 18 year old boys who through a he!! of alot more than having some pencil pushin pencil neck geek question your toughness. Those guys go through he!! and back during months of boot camp in which every fiber of their character, morals and mental toughness are challenged in an effort to get them ready for the moment of thier life. If their ego is so fragile that they can't handle a little "come to jesus" motivational comments, then they don't have what it takes to succeed in the NFL anyway, and if that's the case, we don't need them on our team. Saban had nothing to lose. Besides that, Saban has been carefully observing these guys for several weeks now...learning what buttons to push. He figured out the buttons, they showed they needed them pushed, and he pushed them. Enough said!

If I'm a rookie trying to impress the coach, it WOULD light a fire under me if I knew the coach thought I lacked intensity, fire, and desire.... Maybe a veteran you handle differently.

Saban knows what he's doing.

Nah, this week he made the brook trout comment.......about looking into their eyes and not seeing anything behind them.

. .I have seen this look before and he is exactly right. It sits there for all the world to see. I also believe it is very telling and not something you want to see amongst your shipmates or team-mates.(truely my real fear was oh Christ, do I look like that?) Vickerson did the right thing, he went to a veteran for guidence and the comments in this thread about bonding were excellent. I also agree with the thought that once you sign your draft number ceases to exist, never again are you payed without proving yourself. If fatso can't take the heat then get back on the porch with the civilians.
. .I am surprised that Enigmatics took this position I too never expected a "coddle" kinda attitude. I guess I didn't expect what round someone was drafted would make a difference to him. It is however a good debate ,but for me the bottom line is Saban is the boss. He can use any tool he see's fit to affect a player. Grow up or git gone we've lost enough.

a thought; Saban used the press...used them, told them to do his bidding and they did. This coming from a guy who gives them squat and treats them (as one should) like they as decended from earthworms. It must have fried their azzes to know they were doing his bidding and couldn't stop.

saban also repeatedly states that he wants his team to carry themselves with a certain attitude. he wants them to project strength with their looks, so their opponents don't see defeat in their eyes. it only makes sense that when he sees people who look defeated on the practice field, he's going to call them out on it to further illustrate his point.

as for whether the publicity of this particular incident will work or not, we don't know vickerson and wright. i would argue that how you treat them (because i agree, enigmatics, that you must treat players differently) does not come from where they are picked, but what their personalities are. wright's dad did say after the crying incident that tough treatment is exactly what his son needs.

You seem to think that because he hasn't made game altering plays he hasn't been playing well. Look, I think you need to re-examine the DT position and understand that these guys are there to protect LB's the majority of the time. I mean c'mon, how long did we see Timbo go with almost non-existant stats, but still make the pro-bowl? Kevin Carter spoke all-around about Vickerson, not just practice and I'll pretty much take his word for it.
