#1. Putting Will Poole at safety strikes me as sort of the same kind of mistake as it would have been to put Patrick Surtain at safety, back in his rookie and sophomore years when it was talked about a little that Surtain tackles well enough and has the smarts to move to safety. Will Poole can still be an excellent corner in the NFL. I'm not sold that Daniels can be an excellent one, he doesn't have Poole's ball skills or play-making ability. Daniels can be good, and consistent with whatever he is. Saban will know this guy through and through so he'll always know where to put him and when. I think that is why Saban grabbed him. It seems to me that Saban was very sad we could not get Webster, I really do think Saban thought he could "easily" replace Surtain. Not so sure about Daniels.
#2. Wade Smith at center seems like a good move to me too. We always knew Wade had bad upper body strength. But, he has more than decent lower body strength. I think LT is the last place you want to put a person with questionable upper body strength. No upper body strength = no punch = no leverage against speed. I'm not sure how big upper body strength is to a center's game, certainly quickness on the first step is important, as is quickness getting to the next level (linebackers), and strenghth is very important when a nose tackle lines up over top of you...but which area? Tim Ruddy had one of the strongest upper bodies on the Phins back in his day, but he always struggled with a nose tackle on top of him. I'm thinking actually, that lower body strength might be more important there...and honestly, that could be the reason they looked at Wade Smith and saw a center where we'd been playing him at LT. Center is automatically at a disadvantage in engaging a NT just because he has to snap the ball and then release, where NT just has to release. But a quick first step and good lower body strength I would think would help you immensely in such close quarters against a nose tackle. Those are just my thoughts.
#3 Quickie...Mario Edwards at safety doesn't make sense to me. At that point you might as well just toss any corner at safety.
#4. I would toss up Carey as a bust...just based on the last regime's handling of things, but having seen him play in college I really can't imagine him as anything BUT a servicible lunch-pail type RT in the NFL. He just has to eventually be that kind of player, to me...kind of guy ends up starting for 6 years and nobody knows who he is.
#5. I certainly hope Nick can get Brock Berlin to show me something he's never showed me at UM, but honestly I still think once a loser, always a loser.
