Saban's Primary Target: Philip Rivers

You're missing the most obvious point, he's as polished out their on the football field as those soon to be draftees. Meaning he's not a proven NFL starter either.

Two years in NFL training camps, preseason and sidelines is a FAR cry from straight out of college.

Why do you think they like rookies to sit for a year? Getting acclimated to the NFL is a huge help. That's why rookies that sit for a year or two do so much better when they start than rookies who start right away.

I would love Rivers. Ain't gonna happen, but it would be huge for the phins.

They can't keep both over the long haul, so, that would mean that they are going to move Brees. Do you think them moving Brees is more likely?

Again when you create a thread like this, refrain from having a misleading title. Writing something like "Saban's Primary Target: Phillip Rivers" kind of implies that there will be some information inside suggesting that Saban is after Rivers. If you're just writing a conjecture piece, try to say something like "Saban's Primary Target Could Be Phillip Rivers" or something like that.

He may be just as proven an NFL starter as the other guys. However, he still has had 2 years in the league with NFL practice, coaching, and mostly sideline spectating.
So? He'll be learning a new offense with new coaches who have different gameplans

Leinart's arm is stronger then Rivers' too.

* Its unorthodox, but, Rivers gets it out quicker than any of the four.

Strongly disagree with that. I wouldn't mind Rivers but Cutler definitely has a quicker release.

Rivers would be ideal for us. And we could probably get him for a 2nd rounder and a veteran (Madison). San Diego needs a corner and will be hard pressed to pay Rivers that massive bonus this year.

We dont need corners, we need safeties that dont run with their eyes closed.:)

There are four quarterbacks whose names constantly come up as the best and the brightest in this year's draft. Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Jay Cutler, and Brodie Croyle.

I believe that Leinart is the only one of these four who could possibly start as a rookie, and even he should get a year on the bench to acclimate. The other three could theoretically start after one year on the bench, but I expect it to take closer to a year and a half to two years.

On the flip side, Philip Rivers would start immediately.

I went back last night and watched Rivers last game at N.C. State. A Tangerine Bowl lashing of Kansas. Here is my abbreviated comparisons with the other four.

* Rivers is more accurate than any of the other four.

* Only Leinart has comparable decision making skills.

* Only Cutler has comparable arm strength.

* Young and Cutler are better athletes, but none of the five are Kerry Collins, including Leinart.

* Its unorthodox, but, Rivers gets it out quicker than any of the four.

* Rivers is about 18 months older with two years in a pro offense.

Now, I assume many might think River's is unattainable because of the injury to Brees. I don't necessarilty buy that. According to published reports, this is not an injury that will have an effect on Brees's arm down the road. And secondly, the Charger's must trade River's within this off-season if they want any shot at getting a pick in the top half of the draft.

So, if this is true, what do I think it will take to get Rivers. My best guess is that it would take the 16th pick and a willingness to take on some or all of the salary. I think that is a risk Nick Saban is willing to take.

I won't be surprised if Saban goes hard after Hutchinson and then Rivers come the first week of March.

Comments, Complaints?

I have an inkling that if Rivers is going to be moved, it will be to the Jets.

Rivers has a stronger arm than Leinart and a quicker release than Cutler.

Who was Saban's college QB's? Rohan Davie who was athletic enough in college to make plays with both his legs and arm. I think that is what he is looking for. Someone who can run when needed, but relys on the cannon to get the job done.

also hasn't been able to put drew brees on the bench, so why take another backup QB on this team? he was as hyped up as this years SB, and look what we had to watch:tantrum: :rolleyes2

Agree, he would be my first choice, Cutler my second. But there is more written about letting Brees go (wonder why) Is he due for a big paycheck? More than Rivers?

You're right, can't compare college kids just coming out to someone who has already been in training 2 years. No matter which way it swings, it's going to cost the Fins.........but then what is money for?

Why don't you rewatch the Chargers game vs. the Broncos and see what you think of Rivers then.

True as far as actual game experience goes. The big hurdle he's adjusted to is the speed of the NFL and 2 seasons worth of practice gives him a decent edge tho.

We are not talking about a player who could not pass Koy Detmer on the depth chart.

The Charger's could not put River's in front of Brees because Brees never gave them an opportunity. Teams usually stick with a bird in hand.
