Scouting report on Damian Willaims coming out of college

All of our receivers are similar in size and weight and ability. Only Wallace possesses top speed. Philbin is putting together a receiver group that can be put in any spot on the field. This was his plan since coming from GB.

From that film, what stands out are two things: Great hands, very good concentration. He also looks like he can do more than Gibson in terms of routes. But checking Rotoworld, I saw Hamstring injury, then a Quad injury which lingered. If he can stay healthy it's a great pickup, I think. If not, a non-factor then.

You hit the nail on the head. We have to fill the roster spots regardless and Williams personifies a "little risk/potentially medium-to-large gain" signing. I mean, compared to Anthony Armstrong and Legadoodoo, no matter how negatively hard wired anyone might be when it comes to Fins moves, if they take a step back off the ledge, they'll see that based on his potential, signing him if nothing more than for ST was an "everything to gain, little to lose" proposition.

For now, I'm more interested in his kick return ability and playing ST's overall.

Once a guy has been in the league for 3 years, his college scouting report don't mean jack. His pro report.....? IMHO I think he's a solid # 4 receiver to start the season with, if a guy goes down during the year, he becomes an acceptable #3. We know have two guys like this in Matthews and Williams. Throw in Binns, Kevin Cone and either a late round draft pick or a couple of UDFA's to compete during training camp and preseason...I'm fairly happy with our receiver corp. I'd love a Megatron, but we now have much more pressing needs than wide receiver.

OT
OG
at least one versatile C-G backup development guy
TE
OLB
and maybe a safety to try to develop to push Jones or insurance if Michael Thomas doesn't pan out as the 3rd safety.

Hasn't done much returning in NFL and after all this time u would think he would have been a factor there.
I like the signing because unlike the Fox signing he would not be counted on to do a lot as a 5th receiver if he makes the team.
Now if he was going to be our slot or starter I would be worried.
I don't think it does much to help us on special teams so he is a longshot.
I would like to see us try Lamar Miller on kick returns. Moreno will be our starter most likely so he can our 2 back and kick returner.
Im tired of Thigpen he did good one season but in reality he has only one value and he was not good at that last year

burst huh...:bobdole:

this guys got no burst...it's a big part of why his career should have been over already...that and he can't separate...

Tread carefully Hoops. There's only upside with this guy.

Ryan Tannehill needs somebody to throw the ball to while Gibson and Hartline rehab. No biggie.

Ya .... DRAFT somebody at the WR spot. Stop wasting our time dumpster diving.

I'm guessing you think this was a home run signing though. Pity.

Jesus Christ man. It doesn't have to be one extreme or the other. No one said its a home run signing.

He's a young guy with good height and some speed who we're giving a chance to wow in training camp and preseason to see if he can break the rotation. Plus, he's coming to an offense that uses more multiple WR sets than Tennessee and a better QB situation. The potential is there.

You're whole "look at me, I'm the cool contrarian guy because the rest of you are homers" schtick is so old and played out. Stop stirring the pot and causing arguments where there are none. No one is pretending we just signed Megatron.

You got it all wrong man. Not wringing your fists in anger with every signing clearly means you think that the pick is the savior of the organization. This team shouldn't make any signings outside of superstars. If they're not on the phone 24/7 with the Lions trying to make a deal for Megatron, then why bother? Pack it up and move the team to Boise.

Of course, if they do land Megatron, then they gave up too much for an injury-prone not-a-lineman and deserve ridicule for that as well.

Rotoworld had enough on him to see how he faired and who the other receivers were that he was trying to break into the lineup with. They were impressed with him, but he kept getting hurt. I didn't see the Ourlads college scouting and I see he had shoulder problems there, so that's part of his injury history, too. Slender guy who may not be so durable, but from the film he looked like he had ball skills and good route running, and once he hit the NFL he did well.

sig..

Love your sig....That's hilarious. In a nutshell....they always knew what play was coming, so I'm glad the go go thing is gone.

Have you read the two threads about Williams? There are actually people who think he's a legitimate insurance policy to either Hartline or Gibson. They rehash old college scouting reports and speak in the tongue of "upside potential" (as is typically seen for every average receiver we ever sign). I can go to the threads about Williams, Rios, Spadola, Binns, and Cone and it's like ground hogs day.

My major point of contention though is I've seen this before in this organization leading up to drafts. They start stocking up on project/reclamation WR's and give it less attention in the draft by waiting until the project rounds. T'would seem it's been that way ever since the Ted Ginn mistake. In a perfect world where Tanny actually has chemistry with Wallace and Gibson/Hartline aren't coming off knee surgeries I wouldn't even spend a moment on this subject. But that's not the case right now. There is LEGIT talent in this draft that will be shameful if wasted.

And I respect a view like this. I would not bitch or complain if we took a value pick of a WR if it presents itself. I think Jordan Matthews, per say, would be a steal in round 2. I dont think our WR corps is the best or near the best. But that's not the point.

You need to present your view more so along the format of your well-stated post above. Not acting so condescending to anyone who thinks that a modest signing has any potential. It's such a turn off.
