After reading and seeing the development of Vernon I decided to go back and dig out some of my old writies based on the info from my buddy. Some guys have been wanting to see the old right ups and below is the right up from 2012. For the most part my buddy was right. He was wrong about Martin - just about everybody was but Egnew and Vernon Tanny - right on.

just was excited that he told me about Vernon and he was really excited about the guy back then. To see him come along has been fun. See write up below.

So like always I had a chance to speak with my buddy today and discuss our draft and get his point of view. Nothing really different then what most "experts" had to say

1. Tannehill - he has all the tools to be a very good QB However he is not ready to play in the NFL this year. He really believes that he will be our starter day 1 but feels that Miami would be best served sitting Tannehll and letting him learn. He believes that Tannehill can make all throws and with some coaching and time could be a very good player in the NFL. While he understands that we had t make the pick, he feels that at 8 he was over drafted for a QB that should not be a starter day 1. Miami's coaching staff will get him ready. (nothing new here)

2. "you have a day 1 starter at left tackle" Martin will start no brainer. He is athletic, he is big, he needs to get stronger but he will fit into that zone blocking scheme that Miami is suppose o be running. (nothing new here)

3. Vernon - Extremely good and will be huge for Miami on 1-2 down. He needs to develop more as an edge rusher. He is really strong an has strong hands. He will set the edge in that 4-3 and do a good job. He said he is not a explosive pass rusher, dont expect for him to be like Wake, but if he can develop a bit more in the pass rushing area he will be a monster. He described him as a bull. He said NE had him rated as a round 2 player and some scouts had him as high as 4th or 5th as a true 4-3 DE. Great Pick May be the best pick in Miami's draft based on what he will do and where he was drafted. (He really talked high of this kid)

4. Egnew - A very good pick if he is used correctly and interesting how he develops. He stated that he is a system guy which you have to be concerned about. However he has the tools and Miami will have to help him develop as a blocker. Yes he is a match up nightmare as most LB will not be able to run but that is over stated as there is no real issue if he can't block as most teams will not even consider the run and play strictly pass when he gets on the field. If he can develop little, it would be interesting how he adds to the offense. (bottom line i got the impression that he is a little but of a project player but has all the tools - again nothing new here)

5. Miller - Was not impressed at all - Soft player. Avoids contact, will go down easy, not sold that the shoulders are not a problem. Will not play hurt. Do not see him performing much. (unlike a lot of us he feels that it was a wasted dream. Does not see him doing much and he even said that he will just get buried down on the roster.)

Kaddu - we didnt discuss

7- Cunnigham - He will make the team. Kid has everything to be a very good WR except speed. He has room to improve but he is smooth and has good hands. Didnt thing he was anything special.

We didnt talk about anyone else.
All in all he felt Miami draft was real sold but would be great if Tannehill develops.

Just wanted to share with you guys like a do yearly.

I notice that Olivier Vernon is now listed at 268 lbs. Check out his biceps and triceps during his interviews. He's ripped.
Olivier made good progress last season but he should be even better this year. No doubt in my mind, he was a terrific 3rd round draft pick. Also because he's a local guy, I notice that he is involved in all of the community work. He seems to love being a Dolphin.

amazing so many assue James will be a plug and play tackle in the NFL but yet MArtin a much better prospect coming out of college was far from that in any position.

To James' benefit, he's not making the transition from LT to RT, and that's not trivial. I don't think James is a sure thing, but since we didn't address RT in FA (which I maintain to be a complete blunder), he's one of the better bets to be a competent day-1 one, starting RT the draft had to offer.

I was really high on Cam Fleming, but many believed he lacked the athleticism to succeed in a ZBS. I disagree, but I understand it as a possibility.

Martin was never a plug and play guy from my view. I said from the day we drafted him that he was a bust and would never be a starter. I was wrong he did start for a season but he shouldn't have. Horrible balance, was thrown around like a rag doll in college, no way he was going to fix his horrible base.

Still was a higher rated prospect in most eyes than Jawan James . I never thought he would be a bust and on the field I don't think he was a total bust but between the ears quite so.
He was adequate as a rookie at RT, based on a rookie learning curve. He was not good at LT but neither was his replacement last year.
James I think is a decent prospect jusr drafted about 30 picks or more too high. I see him as a potential left tackle at some point. Not sure he will be a stud anywhere on line but should be at the least a swing tackle long term.

I not so sure that he is any better bet because he played RT in college. Most teams in college put their best tackle on the left side Im pretty damn sure Jake Matthews would be a top level RT propect and just as ready as James to play week 1 at that position.

He played every game of his collegiate career at RT, so we never could know what he looks like on the left side. He played every single game for4 years in the SEC and I agree that he would be the best bet to be our day 1 starter

I agree he will probably be our starting RT day one, and I like him as a player, but this idea that he has some kind of advantage because he played RT all through college is a joke. I would feel much better about him being our starting RT day one if he had played LT all through college. That would tell me that his coaches thought he was their best OT tackle.

ive got to disagree with you man. As a coach I see it a lot where players have a problem playing left then switching to the right or vise versa. You are very lucky when you get a guy who can do it. It takes time for the player to adjust. but I think we did the right thing in drafting a RT who's true position is RT. A little high for my taste but it was the right move.

I also agree.... switching from LT to RT takes time, and some players just don't adapt well to the change.

Kinda strange that of the first round OT's from last year, Justin Pugh from the Giants played the best in his first year. He was considered a reach and was picked at #19. Ya just never know. We can only hope to have the same success with James.

I would just like to interject here. I keep seeing coaches put their best tackle at lt. Does this count when the lt on james's team was dallas thomas and we drafted him a year earlier?
