Scrimmage Report: Defense shows up, Landry stands out

I'm beyond thrilled to hear the recent reports on Landry. Because initially, you didn't hear much. You just heard he was running with the 3rd team, and dropped a pass, etc...and I was afraid they would not give him a fair chance and he'd be stuck behind Matthews on the depth chart. But things sound good now. Caught a bit of finsiders radio in the car and they were going out of their way to talk about Landry. They like his instincts and how every catch is turned upfield. They compared him to Wes Welker in that way, the fact that he "feels" the defenders around him and will get past the first guy and look for the second defender right off the bat. They said his hands are HUGE and he's not a body catcher. So that combination of good hands, snatching the ball out of the air and immediately turning and stepping upfield and going vertical is going to create a lot of yards for Landry.

We got so incredibly lucky that the draft was so deep in WR this year, and got a good one this time around.

Not at all surprised that Landry is already becoming Tannehill's best friend. Throughout his career at LSU, he was the go-to guy in big situations. Many WR's with much more physical ability never master the art of presenting themselves as a target. Coming out of college, Landry's as good as it gets in this area. His combination of instincts, physicality, precision, and hands make him an ideal slot WR. Best gift you can give a developing QB.

Wallace talking about Landry looking like a 3rd or 4th year WR -- very positive.

Well, generally that role falls o the 6'6 TE who is a size mismatch and can also block in the run game. But we don't have that guy. Maybe Lynch can become that guy, but until then it fall 9 Gibson and Landry.

The slot WR is important in a WCO, especially the one Sherman ran. If Landry gives us something close to what Gibson was giving us before his injury, he will be very productive.

Sent from my phone, so please forgive any typos.

Landry seemed to be "EVERYONE'S" favorite Miami Draft Pick, including all the draft analyst on TV. His speed and limited athleticism are the only true knock's on him, but seems to make plays in-spite of them. I'm hopeful he'll shut up, all the Remaining NA-SAYER'S, and just go out and continue to make plays. Terrence Fede is my personal favorite. I get the feeling, once he gets acclimated with the speed of the NFL and gains valuable experience he's going to become a monster of a DE. Fede oozes athleticism and play making ability. He reminds me of both Jeff Cross and O-Gun both of whom were either a late draft pick or a UDFA, who both became Pro-Bowl players. Cross and O-Gun both were also tremendous athlete's in the mold of Fede. I'm not saying Fede will be a Pro-Bowler, but am hopeful he develops along the lines of Cross and O-Gun!!!!

When I was watching the draft I was so worried that New England was gonna take Landry in the second round. I just felt if they did he would instantly become Tom Brady's best friend and make a serious run for rookie of the year. I was so relieved when they took Garoppolo instead and then pleasantly surprised when we stole him with the next pick. I figured we would have went for need but glad we didn't.

It's very early to give much weight to anything that happens during a scrimmage like this but at least it gives us something to talk about before TC. The one thing that seems plainly obvious though is that landry is going to be a serious threat. Very excited about this kid

Fede showed well during the scrimmage from what I read. Another rookie I like right behind Landry is the other LSU rook DT Johnson.

Might help fill the void left by Keller. He was going to be Tannehill's go to guy. I always thought a young QB's best friend is often a good pass catching TE and a good slot receiver is probably as close as it gets.

He's not as big as a TE going over the middle, but he's as tough as any TE going over the middle, and he uses his body to block out defenders like a TE; he also has great balance. Combine those factors with his savvy route running and A+ hands, and you have all the elements of a QB needs to trust a receiver. When Landry's working, QB's know they don't have to throw perfect passes. He'll be in the right place, use his body/physicality, fight for the ball, and make the tough catch.

Also cool to see Philbin highlight his play speed.

If you've got both, you're like Tom Brady w. Gronk and Welker. If you've got TWO playmaker TEs plus slot you're like Gronk, Hernandez and Welker -- man. No wonder they rolled thru the division...

We've got a good start: 1 out of 3 ain't bad, lol. Clay is ok but he's no matchup nightmare.
