Second Guessing Hickey?

You say that you would've paid "this guy and that guy"...you can't get every single player you go after. With the cards he was dealt, I am content with what our rookie GM has accomplished so far. It's easy for all of us to say how we would've done it, but it just isn't realistic.

I believe that I'm being very realistic. Collins wanted to come here, and signed later for $6M. Asamoah signed for $4.5M and I'm sure $5M would have brought him here.

Verner signed for $5M, and there is no doubt in my mind that he would have come here for the same or an extra $500K. There is no comparison between a young Verner, who was great last year, and Finnegen.

Hickey opened the check book for CB and DT but, not on the OL where IMO he needed to for one more guy. I'm really hoping this all works out but, do think my assessment is fair at this point.

What changed from a month ago when you started threads mentioning the Dolphins being loaded on D and the O-line being much better?

CT, I do recall saying that our DL was loaded, as it is with the additions os Starks and Mitchell. I cannot recall saying the OL was much better but, do remember starting a thread asking if the OL can be worse than last year, with MANY a No posts being put up.

call me a conspiracy theorist, but I think some of the overpaying had to do with Miami's current public image. We're not a particularly well-received team in the news and media, and some players may think there needs to be a little more incentive to play here rather than another less-scrutinized team and fan-base.

I honestly don't know why we gave Finnegan the contract that we did. There must have been something in those negotiations that was out of Hickey's power.

We arent a well received team because we've been mediocre since Bush was in office, not because the media has some sinister conspiracy to destroy the most average team in the league(sorry, second most average team, apologies Dallas).

That said, it wouldnt surprise me if we spent hard in order to drum up some excitement. Ross, as is his custom, is fighting tooth and nail to host another Superbowl. He needs to rile up the fan base. He needs ticket sales to fly through the roof. If thats his endgame, then signing a bunch of "names" makes perfect sense...even if they werent the best way to fix the problems.

I was overly anxious to fix most of the OL in the first few days of FA. I was told by some to be patient. Well, after seeing the end result of what we ended up with on the OL, and FA overall. I have to second guess what Hickey has done. I also have to believe that IF Ireland had done the same, more would be doing the same. A closer look.

OL- We overpaid Albert at $9M a year, and got Smith for $2.8M a year. IMO, we could have had Collins for $6M and Asamoah for 5M, and still had Smith. So, we could have filled 3 spots for $2M more. I would have preferred that.

CB- We got a good deal on Grimes but overpaid Finnegen at $5.5M a year. We could have had Verner, who I targeted to replace Grimes (almost as good last year), for $5M in place of Finnegen.

S- We got Delmas for $3.5M, and could have kept Clemons for less than half that.

RB- We got Moreno for $3M, and Blount went for $1.9. Debatable.

DT- We got Starks for $6M, and Mitchell for $4M. DT is very deep and talented in this draft. We could have signed one, and drafted another, saving a few Mil. Debatable.

Overall, I'm not overly impressed with what Hickey has done to this point but, we shall see.

No, going into FA i figured we would pick up 2 starters, and 2 in the draft. Jason fox is a bonus, and im happy with the added depth. Moreno was icing on the cake to me. However I am not backing Hickey up yet, because we only have 6 draft picks, and need to hit some solid o-line picks, so im holding my breathe until may.

We have 7 picks and if Ireland made the same moves as Hickey the pitchforks and torches' would be heavy right now..lol

Immediately after Dustin Keller was injured some members of this forum were quick to exclaim the same attitude. "Just wait, we dont know anything yet, you all arent medical professionals!". Some of us just responded "obvious injury is obvious".

Yes, there are times when you have to wait to see how something plays out. Dion Jordan, a guy who doesnt lack talent but needs polish and time to recover from an injury, is one of those situations. The majority of our free agents arent.

Cortland Finnegan was a botched signing. Anyway people want to look at it. Not only is he old and injury prone, there is more than enough evidence to show he was a sharply declining player. And even if people want to ignore all of that, we could have saved millions by waiting a few days. Just a terrible signing no matter how long we wait to evaluate it. Even if he turns into the next Brent Grimes it still wont excuse throwing away money unnecessarily.

With the exception of perhaps our defensive tackles, the rest of the decisions fall under the "problem could have been fixed in a better way had we made a different decision" category.

I think that's fair if we add in Grimes. The pass on Verner was hard to understand after the Finnegen signing. There is just no way to compare the two.

I have to believe the same. The overpaying for Albert and Finnegen, with 2-3 holes still left in the OL would have lit up the forum. Funny how a name change makes a difference. lol

Albert was a MUST you overpay what you must have can't be angry there. We only have 2 holes on the line and frankly i only see 1. Jason fox won the lions job last year injury hurt him

was concerned about the OL, as were many, but, am feeling much better today. Smith is not great but, he is a fit to what we are doing and can run block. I believe he will be a very solid starter this year.

Now, we move on still needing an OG and a RT. At OG, we could go for a Wharthon for a year or another vet yet to be released or, maybe we think Brenner and Dallas can compete. It's a whole lot easier than needing two.

At RT, we may still do something with a Streif, a Penn, a Clabo or another vet, while adding a 2nd rounder in the draft.

The other option, which I'm beating to death, is Deitrich-Smith at C, and moving Pouncey. This would be perfect for me as EDS is as good or better than Pouncey n the run, and not far behind in pass protect.

Either way, there are viable options for our OL t be good this year, and that's all we, AND TANNEHILL care about.

In the end, not much has changed in a month...except you opinion....

I thought we needed 3 out of FA. Do you consider Shelly a sure fire starter and upgrade?

You are more focused on dollars than you are the player, and that's where GM's will get into trouble. Just because someone is cheaper does not mean they are a better fit.

Even if you were just grading him on dollars, all of our signings were at or under market value with the exception of Finnegan - mostly because we don't know what demand for him was.

Could you provide proof for that assertion? Im asking genuinely. If there was no way to sign any of the other free agents and the only option was to overpay Branden Albert, i will change my opinion on the matter. Right now, it seems like we paid upwards of $10 million more for a player who is older, more injury prone, and less talented then the players other teams signed.

Why do you care if the Phins "overpaid"?....they have the cap room, he was one of the 3 best LT available and he wanted to play in Miami and he filled a position of need.
