Senior Fans...lets talk

I have been a fan since 1969(8 years old). I bought some gum and it had Miami football cards. (I eventually put those cards up against the spokes on my bike with clothes pins...wish i still had them.) Up to that point I did not know there was a pro football team in Miami. Since the Fins were our team in south Florida, I adopted them. I used to watch the flipper TV show all the time, so dolphins were cool. when Shula arrived in 1970, there was a lot of publicity since he was the former coach of the Baltimore Colts with Johnny Unitas. Soon we were winning 10 games a season, super bowls, and had the respect of the league, referees, and league owners.

i ahve been a fan since 66 and have seen it all the great years and the not so great but would not have missed a year for anything. Love the Fins and my whole family loves them. There is a very large following of Fin Fans in Canada as can be noted when we plyed Buffalo in Toronto. Most of my games have been in Buffalo over the years where i have put up with some nasty crap from the Bills fans but its been great. Dolphin fan forever and hope we win again before i pass into the great beyond(haha) looks like a stellar defense this year and lets hope Henne gets his game on. Can't wait for the season to start.

Remember the Christmas Day 71 AFC championship? I was 14, watched with my 12 yr old brother. 12 Hall of Famers played in that game

Since 1971

12 Hall of Famers in 1 game...great observation! Now, you may get 12 convictions in 1 game...

As for me, my first Dolphins game was their last Super Bowl victory. I was 8 and my older brother was a huge Vikings fan. Out of spite, I had to root for the Dolphins and have been ever since. I even remember my mother buying me a Dolphins coloring book and a set of colored pencils a few months after the game. It's almost at the point where I can't really remember either not liking the Dolphins or the Beatles (listening to "Abbey Road" at the moment), for that matter.

Born in 1070, watching since the days of Woodstrock. Had a chance to watch a young Pitt QB dismantle an up-and-coming college led by the Riverboat Gambler; you could see the talent oozing out of this kid wearing 13.

Watching these days with the "game manager" mentality; I just vomit. Scared to make the big play, scared to attempt to make the big play, and I doubt they even considered what a big play really is.

I do love the defense either JJ/Bates 4-3 with speeds ends or Nolan 3-4, it's about the only part of the game I really interest too.

im jealous of you guys. i wish i knew what it felt like for my team to make it to the big game, or even win. out of all pro sports i have not seen any of my teams win the big one

it smells like an old folks home in here

You think it smells like an old folks home now... just wait 'til Namor gets here....

One thing us ol' timers will always have is the fact that we grew up on real football.... not this pansy a**, watered down, fantasy football driven crap that it's turned into..

Now, one of you nice young men help me find my glasses....

My father became a season ticket holder in '72 so I was there to witness history. But I'll admit I only paid attention part of the time, I first really started to pay attention when Nat Moore was a rookie. That guy was something else, he just flew by defenders.

First of all I LOVE this thread. I have been a Fin fan for my whole life. I am 46 and I remember my family always being fans. I really loved the Shula years, especially the personnel aspect. It seems like we lost player...we found replacements that were good enough to keep us going. And the Marino years were just special...it was awesome to know that we could win anytime we lined up because of the special ability if that one player and we were NEVER out of a game no matter how far behind we were. I remember watching the clock in games and sitting on the edge of my seat knowing that #13 could STILL win it for us. Awesome.

I think it is sad to see we can not even field a winning season anymore much less compete for the division. The cool thing about that period of time of about 30 years, was the reverence, respect and admiration from the media, other fans, other players and coaches for how the Miami Dolphins played, operated and handled themselves. Now we are fodder for late night talk show jokes, media slamming and even booing from our own fans. There is so much frustration about this franchise and those of us who knew a better time really take it hard. And we watch the Patriots just reload and reload every year. Now we know how THEY felt during the Shula years. LOL.

That was an amazing game. My aunt, uncle, and cousins were watching the game with us. I was a fan since the year previous but I became die hard that day.

it smells like an old folks home in here

Watch it, we resemble that remark !!

Seriously, Day one fan here...Biscayne College dorms for TC...Wahoo McDaniels was my favorite player, got caught by my Uncle (Davie Cop at the time), wandering around drunk outside of Uncle Al's bar, 3:00 am night before the very first Fins game... They just took him back to the dorm...

No experience in the world like watching a Fins game at the OB when it was jam-packed... The Eagles game that the cheering was so loud we got delay of game calls. That old concrete structure just creeking away... The tank in the endzone with Flipper... Dolfan Denny. Hook and Lateral. The Kellen Winslow game. Beating the crap out of the jests in the mud...AJ Duhe with an interception return for a TD. Marino and his passing ability. Remember the story about Keith Jackson getting knocked out ? Was joking with Marino about where he wanted the ball on a particular play. He said outside, Marino hit him perfectly. He said put it inside this time, again perfect placement. Jokingly said, hit me in the head next time if you're so good...well, Marino did...knock his azz out on the practice field... The perfect season... The Marino years.... The Shula years... 17 game win steak against Bills, matching that against the Pats.

Since then...the dark years...JJ, Wanny, Saban, Cam Cam, Tuna regime...

Well, time to get back to reality...been nice and refreshing, but those days are past. You can knock Shues all you want, but we were ALWAYS in contention during those years, since then......

Ted I love ya as a Dolphin fan but cant help but comment on the Michigan thing. Funny, I'm a Buckeye parent. Have a son whos a junior at OSU. Ironic how diverse fans of a team are.

Since 1971

Although I don't like tOSU I have a hard time understanding how some fans on both sides just hate even mentioning the name of the other team. Quite honestly, if there is a college football team that I truly dislike I'd have to rate Notre Dame just ahead of tOSU.

By default, you can remove the calendar since Michigan's last win from the Columbus Dispatch's web page in a few days
