Senior Fans...lets talk

Do you guys remember the playoff game with the raiders, the one where stabler was being sacked and threw that touchdown to beat us, I think Dave casper caught it. I remember I actually cried after the game! LOL

....I've been a fan since 72'....I'm closer to 50 then 40....I do remember Griese,Kiick,Csonka, Warfield and other big time Dolphin names playing... I remember hearing a story about Manny Fernandez wrestling with Alligators!....But I was young...not fully understanding the greatness I was privileged to watch...later,watching Dan Marino beat the then 11-0(I think) Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football with many of the 72' Dolphins dawning the sidelines was simply chilling to watch...I've said this before and I'll say it again..I have yet to enjoy a Dolphin game today like I did when Marino was slingin' it....

The missing respect for our team IS the most disturbing thing. You described that whole thing perfectly. Organization was forever the class of the league. Now its the Pats and Steelers for the most part

Since 1971

It was called the "Sea of Hands game",and Im with you, I almost cried myself, wanting to go to another Super Bowl that year. My first year watching the Dolphins was 1970,thuss part of my moniker name. We lost that year to the Cowboys in the Superbowl, I was 5 and almost cried that day as well ! lol

But after that came the undefeated season, and then another super Bowl title with the no name defense,Griese,Csonk,Langer, and all the rest !!! What some absoluttely great memory years !!! At lease us older Dolphin fans remember them, and have that to fall back on, I really feel for the younger guys who have never at least experienced a great team like that, and I mean that in all sincerity !

Even during the great Marino years, I cant believe we didnt win at least 2 Super Bowls, the organization never surrounded Dan with the talent he needed though. He had some great recievers, but never a running game, and although some of the defenses were descent,it just was never enogh,or all together at once. I sure miss even those days, man this team has got to get it together and get things right, and when I say team, I mean organizatiopn and all. Surround Henned with talent if you want to give him a real shot at suceeding, and then if he doesnt this year,go after a good, real good prospect in the draft next year ! Move up,their will be 5,6 QB next year with legit potential,so get it done,what-ever it takes ! Then put the pieces around him and lets get our Dolphins back where we belong,at the top fighting the Steelers,Colts and all the rest for that Super Bowl title ! To many years long gone, time to get it back !! And if Henne does come along this year, great, then really add around him and lets go !!!

Had a recent conversation with someone who said "It must be tough to be a Dolphins' Fan" and "Why cheer for that team?"

The answer is the history of the franchise and those who have made it great through the years, giving us so many good times, as many of you have described in your responses to this thread. I'm 57, and for me, they're still my team. And yes, it is difficult at times, but its so engrained in my thinking that I can't imagine a football season with any other team.

Sure would be nice to see a successful season this year. Every year, I still hope, and I'm doing that right now. Will be next year, too.

Thanks for starting this thread. It's fun to read the posted memories... even the painful ones.

I've been a fan since before the 70s Super Bowl teams, and nothing has topped that rise from laughing stock to undefeated icon. But win or lose, it certainly was a joy to watch Marino throw the football every week for so many years. Not returning to the promised land has been frustrating, and I'd add to the major disappointment's list the loss to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game that denied us of a Super Bowl rematch with the Bears. We might have given them there only 2 losses of the season and Dan might have gotten his ring.

I remember that game AFC championship game well. I was slightly relieved we didn't win that game, because I really doubt we could have beaten the bears in the rematch. They were a really good team and I don't think the outcome would have been pretty.
I also concur with your hockey assesment. I'm a Blackhawks fan and it took us a while to get over that hump. Oh and I'm a Cubs fan too. I would be willing to bet the Phins win a SB before the Cubs win (if ever) a championship.

I have been a fan since 70 (born 1960) and have seen the GOOD (Shula + Greise + Marino + Csonka and Morris), the BAD (Wanstadt/Cam Cameron + Ray Lucas + John Beck) and the UGLY (Tony Sporano + Henne). It has'nt always been a pleasure but I will continue to show interest in the phins.

For pure entertainment, I think my favorite game was when Dan Marino got in the big shootout with Ken O'Brien of the Jets. Although the Jets won that game, the game was special to me because I had been stationed in Germany for 8 years and had not seen a live dophins game for that 8 year stretch and I had just rotated stateside.

...I think I have a fetish for the number 13...Before Dan Marino was a Dolphin and became my all-time favorite Phin....my favorite Dolphin was Jake Scott...he was a ball Hawk

When Shula took over, I started watching the fins.. that was an exciting time in S. FL.. the Bears game was one of my favorite game too, but to watch that perfect season, game by game...that was priceless..

I became a Fins fan in 1969. That's when I became interested in sports. I didn't want to be a Viking fan because most everyone else was due living next to the river that separtes Minnesota from North Dakota. Miami was playing a game in the mud vs. Oakland on TV and I liked dolphins (watched Flipper as a child) and also liked the colors because they were colorful and different than the rest. Also, Florida and Miami were VERY exotic places for a small town kid from the plains like me. I was very fortunate to watch the glory days of the Dolphins and was even able to get a Csonka shirt up here! The winning Super Bowls were great, as was the win over KC in OT's and Monday night distruction of Chicago. The loss to San Diego broke my heart as did the loss to the Patriots and the Snake loss to Oakland. The Marino years were great. Like someone else said, with Shula we were always in the playoff picture. Miami used to have the winningest percentage in all sports for a while. The last few years have been tough. But you have to have tough times to really appreciate the good times. Hopefully, the good times will return soon. Meanwhile, the Dolphins have become almost a hobby for me. It's something that keeps my interest, and that's a good thing. Before I die, I would like to watch a Dolphin home game. I have been to their practice facility in Davie and have driven by the stadium. But one thing is certain... I will ALWAYS be a Miami Dolphins fan!

First of all I LOVE this thread. I have been a Fin fan for my whole life. I am 46 and I remember my family always being fans. I really loved the Shula years, especially the personnel aspect. It seems like we lost player...we found replacements that were good enough to keep us going. And the Marino years were just special...it was awesome to know that we could win anytime we lined up because of the special ability if that one player and we were NEVER out of a game no matter how far behind we were. I remember watching the clock in games and sitting on the edge of my seat knowing that #13 could STILL win it for us. Awesome.

I think it is sad to see we can not even field a winning season anymore much less compete for the division. The cool thing about that period of time of about 30 years, was the reverence, respect and admiration from the media, other fans, other players and coaches for how the Miami Dolphins played, operated and handled themselves. Now we are fodder for late night talk show jokes, media slamming and even booing from our own fans. There is so much frustration about this franchise and those of us who knew a better time really take it hard. And we watch the Patriots just reload and reload every year. Now we know how THEY felt during the Shula years. LOL.

From the ashes rises the Phoenix.

I might not be quite old enough to be considered a senior fan but I am definitely old enough to remember Dan “the man”.

I started watching Miami when I was five in nineteen seventy nine. I remember when Marnio took the reins and I shed a tear when Don and Dan withdrew from view.
I cheered when Jimmy came in and then jeered at Wannstedt’s tenure here.
The ups and downs, the broken remotes, I even lost a dial or two off the TV when Miami clambered through denial.

There is no other team in the NFL or AFC East, that I would trade Miami for in the least. It is, was and always will be the team that gives me desire and then makes me swear in strings of drunken f-bomb laden verbal fires.

Tried and True I will always bleed Aqua, Orange and Blue, Miami Dolphins through and through!!!

Go Fins.

fan since 95 or so, went to my first dolphins game when i was 10 years old. Saw marino play which was pretty awesome, first time i saw the dolphins play i became a die hard fan. I remember the pain jaguars 63-7 whooping they put on us, that hurt badly but i brushed it off and moved on like every dolphins fan should have.
