Shelley Smith Leaves N.E. w/o deal

"Because there's another 31 teams in the league...they also have two veteran guards so Smith likely can't be offered a starting gig like with us. They just spent $32m on Revis so they don't have a lot of cap room. There's plenty of reasons. "

Cool! Fair enough. If we can outbid them for someone who's an upgrade for us, then I'm all for it!

Sorry, but didn't want to read all 12 pages so a question: Why did Smith leave without a contract in New England? If he's not demanding too much money then why would the Pats not try to ink him? Last I checked, they like good football players. :)

Sounds like they are trying to make room in their cap. They are asking Wilfork and someone else to take pay cuts.

i can't recall ever saying that...and i liked oher as a prospect...so there's a soft spot for me with him admittedly...he's first round physical talent all day long...and if he does pan out not someone in 2 years we got to replace...i'm trying to look for the long term...get away from stop gaps and older players

Oher did not pan out in Balt the last two years, and that was with a SB team.

Not sure what the situation is in New England but he may not be a starter there. This may be a Belichick move to keep him from coming to us.

Oher has looked like a player breaking down for a few years now.

And I've always said, when there is a GM who is better than yours, it's best to not take there scraps.

jerry wasn't bad in pass pro he just coudn't run block worth a crap...too bad this smith guys the polar opposite

Maybe we can start jerry and smith on a 6 man oline. Smith blocks on runs and Jerry blocks on pass plays. Lmao

We could go with a Wharthen, who had a fabulous year, but is 32 (I think). I am questioning what Hickey has done on the OL, our biggest need, so far.

You can't sign every top free agent though and to be honest he signed what many ranked the top three at their position already in Grimes, Albert , and Starks...granted two were re-signs, but they count against the cap just the same.

He also signed Mitchell who Polian listed as one of his top five free agents, and Delams, who is probably a second tier free agent

We are still 25 minutes away from being in free agency for 48 hours. Plenty of options and plenty of solid O Line starters out there that can come in and compete with a rookie and be a stop gag if needed, and will be much better than last year’s line.

Heck, I wasn’t a fan of the Hickey hiring, but so far I like what I am seeing.

that's fair but many people here were all about signing eugene monroe had the ravens let him get away...and would have been stoked about it

Former Rams guard Shelley Smith still in New England on visit. Miami on deck.

Damnit...get him out of there.

Hard to consider Monroe his scraps.

FWIW, Grimes and Albert (at a high price) were expected by almost everyone. Mitchell was good, and Delmas may or may not be better than Cemons.

What has been done on the OL reminds me of a draft. When there is a run at a position, you better make a move or you will lose out. The time of FA does not matter but, the signing of all the top OL does, and we seemed to be asleep.

True, but Ozzie didn't let him go, he ended up getting him at the price he wanted him at, because he's a better gm than what we got.

And that's not even a knock of hickey, I like what he's done so far.

Expected or not doesn't really matter as those two guys were considered the top of the market for their position and Miami retained them. Hopefully Shelley makes it out of NE (which I guess he hasn't as of yet) and Miami has reached out to Shrief again. I am not overly concerned yet as there are a few players that could be long term players and several stop gag players. As I said on another post, if in two weeks he has still only signed Albert I will be concerned. Right now there has only been six guards signed and four of them stayed with their own teams. There have been 15 tackles signed, six by their own team (and Albert is one of those 15)...there are a lot of players out there still, no reason to panic or worry about any runs.

so maybe thats the same thing he wants to do with oher...

They had conversations with Monroe throughout. I've read they haven't even reached out to him. It's totally different but it's possible if he gets no interest Baltimore would bring him back cheap, but I doubt he's really a guy they're too serious about keeping, but obviously I'm not in the meeting room, just reading the tea leaves.
