Rookie left tackle Wade Smith was named to the Pro Football Weekly 2003 All-Rookie team Wednesday. Smith started all 16 games at left tackle for Miami, a feat that will also reap him a financial windfall.

Smith's extensive playing time allowed him to earn an escalator salary clause in his contract for the 2003 season. His salary that season will more than double to approximately $1.3 million.

for all the bashing, he was quite a 3rd round steal

good he deserves it, if he works hard this offseason his sophomore year can be a breakout season for a guy as gifted athletically as he is.

he needs 20 pounds muscle.......he needs to get to work.....if he does that....we have a pro bowl LT.

Just curious, how many rookie O-lineman played in all 16 games this season?

Great.....he just cost us $600,000 more for next season.....

:goof:

To add to that, how many of them played all 16 at LT??

What this kid did this year is simply admirable. He had exactly one year's experience at LT and two overall at tackle. Last season he played about about 272 lbs. Still small. Wasn't supposed to play at all this year. Forced into action. Manned up. Held himself accountable, even thru unfair criticism.

He's gonna be one helluva ballplayer. Wait and see.

One, Wade Smith.

Other than two games where he was really off, the guy was solid all year and may be a fixture at his position for several years to come.

And Gross was chosen 8th overall. Smith was chosen 78th. :)

Smith didn't have any competition to get this honor. No other rookie OT other than he & Gross played that much.

Wade's Woes

Wade Smith made that team because no other LTs got as much playing time this year - likely because no other team had such a lack of veteran tackles.

Wade Smith single-handledly LOST the Colts game for us and was responsible for some other costly screw-ups this year, the road Pats game especially comes to mind.

With time, he may be above average, but don't let this somewhat shallow (though nice) honor obscure the fact that he was a turnstile for D-linemen this year.

Re: Wade's Woes

I disagree - Norv/Wise lost the Dolts game because they did not provide Smith w/any help block Freeney when the rookie was not up to it...

I agree, if norv just went over the middle and high percentage stuff more w/ ricky involved in the passing game over the middle, we wouldnt have had those kind of probs as much. it took until desperation of washington game and fielder coming in to go over the middle. why did it take so long? wanny handcuffed the offense is the inside poop.
