So assuming that Ross cleans house

I wanted to note that there are plenty of teams that cant stop tight ends..34 and 43 alike...

I don't see any of these guys being able to reach the QB from any position. None of these players (with the exception of Starks to some degree) has any significant pass rushing ability. Having space eating 3-4 DE's is fine, but the reality is if these guys could pressure the QB, they would be doing so on obvious passing downs as interior guys when we would go to a 4 man line (irrespective of what our "base" defensive set is).

My bad, I did not write it correctly.

What I meant to say is that Langfold, Starks, Odrick etc could be pass rushers as defensive tackles in a 4-3. I'm not talking about them being defensive ends. They have good speed for DTs, but not as DEs.

And also talking about a DL rotation like Saban had where we would wear down the opposing OL. We do need a new faster DE but we also need a 3-4 OLB to replace J Taylor. Which do you think would be easier to find? A 4-3 DE or a 3-4 OLB? To me it is not close. We keeping trying to find and then beat round pegs into square holes.

Also, there is the NT issue. Do we give P Soliai a 62 million 4 year deal next year or lose him as a FA? I'd trade him right now for either a good pass rushing end, pass catching TE or good young corner. Or a draft pick.

I think the 3-4 is better, look at the Steelers, Ravens, or Jets. Either system can work, the players just have to step up

when the ravens were dominant in 2000 they were a 4-3 with ray lewis as the mike. they switched when they drafted suggs around 03ish and when rex ryan took over as defensive coordinator. Both defenses can be succesful, and it matters who the players are as much as the scheme matters. like when texan fans were worried about mario williams making the switch to 3-4.. he didn't seem to have any trouble.

and while the patriots 4-3 isn't working out just yet, at least he's trying to stay ahead of the game instead of still playing ball like it's 1986 like the fins are.

There is two HUGE reasons a 4-3 makes more sense.

Yes, a couple of teams can play the 3-4 because they have those special players. This is why the Patriots who everyone copied is now playing a 4-3. The Steelers and the Ravens both have a number of great players on their defense, they could play anything. If we had the players on defense that the Steelers and Ravens had, we would not be having this debate.

Every single person who is saying that Randy Starks would be "great" in the 4-3 are proving just how little they know. He used to be in the 4-3 next to Haynesworth in his prime and he was mediocre. With Haynesworth. I'd hate to see him next to someone lesser. It's not even close, he's much better as a 3-4 DE

Would you rather us stick with the 3-4 or go back to the 4-3?

absolutely NO DOUBT 4-3. 3-4 is designed for pressure to come off the edge. and teams end up using 4 down-lineman in nickel situations anyways. for us, if we are running a 3-4, it means we are undermanned with interior penetrating defensive lineman which puts us at a HUGE disadvantage in passing situations. its the reason we get no pressure on the quarterback in passing situations.

it just simply makes WAY more sense to build a defensive line based on penetration than gap containment
