So Funny, Our OL..

my guess is that he started for 2 years in san diego while houck was there and he'll start for us while houck is here. as for stockar, even the lions didn't want him :shakeno:

What do you mean, even the Lions didn't want him? They wanted to re-sign him, they let him test the market and it backfired on them. The last I checked the Lions have a d@mn good offensive line.

RT Kelly Butler (McDougal's replacement this year)
RT Damien Woody (we tried to sign him last year)
C Dominic Raiola (I wanted the Fins to sign him this year)
LG Rick DeMulling (started for Indy last year)
LT Jeff Backus

The Detroit Lions offensive line blocked well for Kevin Jones last year. In the final eight games of the season, no one had more yards than Kevin Jones and more than half of those yards were behind the right side of the line where McDougal was blocking.

I am a firm believer that the o-line really has to play a few seasons togehter before they become great. It has to gel. You cant keep changing things around there. I think it was the right move to keep most of the guys we had and bring in Houck. Even if we replaced our whole line it wouldve taken them till at least midseason to come together as a unit.

Hadnot, Carey, and James are definete keepers. But now that teams have cut players, we need to look at the Free Agents list, and sign a veteran for a one-year deal just to upgrade our line this year. Preferrrably a Center and a Left Tackle, but we could use anybody, for instance: Martin Bibla, Matt O'Dwyer, David Brandt.......i also think for Safety, we should sign Junior Rosegreen, he would be a good addition to develop.

I think we sign anyone who can upgrade our depth on OL at this point, I think the OL starting now is the OL we have for the year, bar injuries.

HMMM. lets see we started the year off with Wade Smith at LT, Jeno at LG, Seth at C, Whitley at RG and ST. Clair at RT. How does that resemble this line. Hadnot and Carey hae worked their way into the starting lineup and MacIntosh got in late and played hurt. Houck was able to see what wise wasnt that Carey and Hadnot should be put in to gain experience and St. Clair and Whitley are Back ups. This line will be very differnet than last year. We Drafted Alabi for the future, McDoogle will be a quality back up if he cant break the staring line and we have a couple of other guys in back up roles that can develop. It looks much better than any line we have had here in the past 7 or 8 years.

The lineup we have now is what ended the season, except for Carey, that's what I'm talking about, at the begining of the season Wade and my least favorite Whitley started off, but both showed they weren't ready and what ended the season is pretty much what's starting the season with again Carey being the only new starter, but he was suppose to start at RT last year..so we have completed the cycle.

Time and Familiarity helps...i would still pick up some of the young talent that has been cut for depth...Martin Bibla and Pete McMahon are young but have talent...i would rather that than journey men on their way past thirty.

The problems with last year's lineup was that Whitley was starting (now benched), D-Mac was coming off an injury (now healthy), Vernon Carey was on the bench (now starting), Seth McKinney was starting (things are never perfect), and most of all... the biggest one of them all... lack of coaching. Now that we have the BEST Offensive Line coach in the business and even another Offensive Line coach for some reason (we do have two), our O-line is going to be so much better shape and the only thing that lies in the way from these guys starting to gel together is patience, time, and experience playing together. I really do feel this line could excell under Houck's coaching but it's going to take discipline and patience.

The Lions (and everyone else) didn't want McDougle. We signed him for a one year contract at minimum salary with a $25,000 bonus.

I guess you didn't watch the MNF game, because there line looked pathetic vs the Rams defense.

i still dont understand why Saban/Houck arent playing St. Clair at Center...remember he was an All-American in College, as a CENTER. And we all know McKinney is terrible, so why not TRY someone else?

Im still extremely dubious about our OL at this time but the 1 upside is these guys have had more playing time to gel especially Carey getting his time to shine. The other major upside is Houck who will get those guys playing as a unit. Still needs some tweaking tho IMO.

I think the line calls and the fact St. Clair really doesn't want to play center has something to do with that.

Dan Neil

Dan Neil is avaliable, the Broncos guy. I think he can only play dirty though
