So what happened to the defense?

Every time Will Davis lined up on Sammy Watkins is what happened to our defense.

We need Jordan Tripp, Koa Misi, and Chris McCain back out there. Trusnik... woof.

I don't think you can hang this one on the defense. The Bills have one of the best running attacks in the league, and apart from the one long Spiller run, we completely shut them down - as in, the Bills averaged less than 2.0 yds/carry if you take out that run.

But in having to respect the run, you end up giving a bit more time to pass. Credit to Manuel, we said "go ahead and try to beat us", and he did. Well, he and Watkins did.

One play Trunsik chasing Spiller down field I seriously thought he was a NT. Just big slow and lumbering! It is not the defense though considering the field position they were dealt. We dodged a couple big ST bullets in the Pats game, but this week we didn't.

I think the entire team, and especially the coaching staff, deserves blame. The defense did some good things, but let's not pretend that Buffalo was going 3 and out often. Let's not pretend that when Miami had a good third quarter, and the defense had been off the field for almost a FULL HOUR of real time (end of 1st half + halftime + about 13 minutes of quarter 3) and the score was 16-10 and Miami had some momentum... the defense **** the bed.

Or you can blame it all on #17.

Ding! Coaching staff gets majority of the blame for this one! First half game plan stunk! Even though we were holding them to FGs you could see the ice was getting very thin under Will Davis feet. It boggles my mind why we don't lock our best corner on their best wr!

The defense has done this for as long as I can remember. People like to act like it's because THEY'VE BEEN ON THE FIELD FOR SO LONG but then they turn around and do it after an hour of rest. I was actually shocked to see them hold up last week after the offense started coming back. I thought for sure we would end up in a vicious cycle of offense scores, defense allows a score.

That's the way it is with this team though. One phase of the game completely sucks and drags down the others. Offense plays OK, defense or ST sucks. It's rarely a great showing by every unit. When it does happen, it's great and you get what happened last week but that's about a one out of every 16 games in a year.

The defense got stuck with having to defend the Bills with great field position all day long. They did a great job just holding them to 9 points in the first half. They gave up some big plays in the second half though. I will say that I don't see the love with Wilson on this sight. I think he sucks.

I think he sucks too.

Bad Offense
Bad Defense
Bad Special Teams
=Bad Coaching

Miami Defense played like I thought they would to start the season, weak at LB....they actually kept us in the game just like they did in Buffalo last yr. They got no help from the offense until the 2nd half and that was only two drives......the KO return was big though, no excuses on that

Big time. We have the slowest "gunners" in the league.

Don Jones was the number one special teamer on our squad and he ran a 4.3. Thigpen a 4.4.

We replaced them w. guys trying to cover kicks/punts that run 4.5 and 4.6. Do the math on the field. It's ugly.

And we have a KR/PR who should be back there.

And weak-legged kicker.

Some of us called this before it happened, btw. It's like seeing a train wreck in slow mo and people scoff at you and say, "That train's not wrecking! It's just turning!" cRRRRRAAAsshhh.

Good Points, I was wondering why we looked so slow out there, forgot about our best special teamer Jones and Thigpen no longer with the team.....that return was huge

It's pretty easy to see that Taylor wasn't equal to the task so it falls to Davis -- and he simply isn't ready either.

Ireland's drafting of CBs -- burned a second rounder on Taylor -- well, it's Ireland. Taylor will never be more than a filler CB, imo.

People talk about his "talent" but I simply don't see it. DO NOT SEE IT. Not exceptional hips. Not exceptional burst. Bad instincts.

You either "got it" at CB or you don't. One of the easiest positions to make a quick impact in the NFL -- IF YOU GOT IT, that is.

Finnegan is on the downside of his talent, even though his instincts are good.

Grimes is the only high quality CB we've got -- and when you're playing a team that has 3 WRs of excellent speed and talent, that stuff gets exposed.

Not to mention when your third and fourth string journeyman LBs are trying to defend against NFL quality RBs and TEs.

We simply got exposed talent wise on both sides of the ball. Count the ways:

> Inside of the OL exposed: journeymen.
> Poor quality WR at the number 2 and 3 spots (simply can't make Ds pay for cheating down).
> Lower quality downfield TEs (Clay is a slashback/filler TE who struggles w. one on one quality coverage. Poor separation and suspect hands. Sims. Slowbot. Terrible hips. Stone hands.)
> Lower quality 2 RB and suspect 3.
> Journeymen LBs starting.
> Lower quality CBs at the 3 and 4.
Backup safety.

All that crap got exposed big time. That's all on Ireland's "drafting for consistent mediocrity" meme. And fans that fall in love w. Rudy-type, low quality NFL talent, lol.

But, of course, it makes people feel better to blame one player: QB. And to a lesser extent: Wallace.

Which just happens to be the higher caliber skill position players on the team. QB w. upside. And the only explosive WR, lol.

Coaching aside the reason the D looked bad was because of the O. When it was 9 to 0 I was thinking that we should have been down by a lot more. Our D was put in a crappy spot multiple times in a row and they still didn't allow a TD. That was very solid D. Special teams/turnovers also put the D in really bad positions. The D can't prevent TD's the entire game when they are getting no help. If our O had played a god game the D would have been just fine. Not to mention we had quite a few starters out on D. The offense killed us again like they have done so many times in recent years.

Every time Will Davis lined up on Sammy Watkins is what happened to our defense.

Davis giving Watkins a 15 yard cushion on 2 and 6 or 3rd and 10 was a problem all day.
Taking candy from a baby. It was just too easy to move the chains.
Meanwhile the Bills were at the LOS jamming and contesting everything.
We play 10 yards off the ball. and they are playing on our side of the LOS
I do not like our scheme on defense.
I would rather play man to man once we have the athlete's.
