Sobering Game Tape on Tannehill

So this is the game vs OSU.

OSU #7 and A&M #8 in the nation at the time...

When I see this tape I see all too familiar downsides of many QBS that have come and gone in the NFL.

Mostly:

Overreacting to the Blitz

Throwing into triple coverage

Throwing a great pass but putting too much mustard on it and making it a difficult play for the receiver.

Throwing picks at the worst times.

Coming close but no cigar.

I like Tannie, and I love the pick, but when I look at this tape, I see some sobering stuff that has led to many of pundits cynicism about how ready and capable Ryan really is.

Check out the tape, and I would love top know your thoughts...

These are all things that can be corrected with good coaching. For once, I am confident in our staff's ability to develop QB talent.

I realize some of the coaches were the same guys who developed him at Texas A&M, but Tannehill is still inexperienced. With time, they should be able to correct these things.
 
He needs time to develop and we all know that but he has tremendous upside, vince young and matt leinart tore up college and both won national championships but where are they now? peyton manning could never beat florida and coming out of college was considered a failure who couldn't win the "big one", but now he is arguably the greatest QB of all time, I would pay very little attention to these individual college games and lets focus on his upside.
 
i see what your saying but its hard to judge the guy from one game. I can tell u to go watch the Baylor game and u will see a totally different QB. He played amazing against a ranked team. Made great throws, didnt force too many passes and just looked comfortable back there picking them apart.
 
i disagree with the assesment of this clip. there's actually an article out on this very game that shows how many small NFL caliber things he does, little nuances. Watching the tape though, I'm no so stoked about Fuller's hands
 
this is why its ok to shelf tanney in our collective minds and get excited about 2012. tanney will not be the starter. that is a good thing. let him get coached up before he gets in the game and cements these bad tendencies.
 
2 of his picks in this game occurred when the WR fell down running his route, another scoring opportunity was eliminated when the WR fumbled after a 50 yard gain.

Look at the accuracy of his throws, very impressive. Look at the plays he makes with his feet, in and out of the pocket.

If this tape is being posted with the intent to make Tannehill look bad, we just drafted a great QB.

Every great QB has terrible games/moments. I saw Andrew Luck throw a couple of awful pick sixes this year. His overall ability is tremendous. He is smart and familiar with the offense. He will improve because of that and his upside is thus immense. Don't sweat the small stuff.
 
He may have the mistake now and then of throwing some curl out routs when the CB is still on his back-pedal, but in this game, he did well IMO. Wr's struggled. I don't know if Fuller is the only deep threat A&M has, but he couldn't beat his CB in any of those deep throws. Maybe Tannehill shouldn't have thrown it, but you can't go all game without throwing a long ball to stretch the field.

0 people have said he starts day one or this year. He was a very good wide receiver. Only played 19 games at QB and did a hella of a job for the switch in college. Played QB in high school so its not like he was just thrown in there. The Gruden QB camp piece, Gruden said it was the first time he had ever seen in his lifetime a QB go out and show a wide receiver how to run a route, why to run the route, and why he would throw it there. He is raw, but darn it (editing purpose) he has infinite potential. He is a huge risk, but from everything I have seen he will bring the pain when up to speed. Plus he comes into a system and language that he will already knows. The title of your thread is misleading as we already knew this info so its not sobering.
 
So you're saying that a QB with all of about 18 games of experience or less made mistakes? I can handle these things. What I don't want is a guy that is afraid to LEAD this team. He has the physical tools, is a football junkie. And was Pre med. I think I'll take our chances.
 
You mean he had a few bad games and has a few flaws?? BAD PICK!!!!!!!!! FIRE EVERYONE!!!!!! MOVE THE TEAM TO L.A.!!!!!!!
 
And here I thought was going to get to see some game film on Ryan.
 
I was on the fence with Tannehill. The first thing to turn me around was the number of rec errors, either dropped passes or turnovers after the catch. The A&M rec have some brutal hands and ball protection habits. The next thing was his show with Gruden.

He won't come in and blow up the league, but no one really has in a while. Stafford, Bradford, Newton all put up numbers but lose (at least until Stafford this year). Dalton and Flacco win but are mediocre stat guys.
 
Wow I totally am missing the problems you are seeing in this tape. He made some awesome throws. His quick release, accuracy, the slant throws, the timing and footwork, this guy has all the talent in the world. On the first pick it was a perfectly thrown ball that was already out of his hand when Fuller slipped down leading to the pick. The 2nd was more of a presnap read mistake, that lead to forcing a bad throw vs the blitz. It was a bad decision and a underthrown ball, but the third was another case of Fuller not coming back to the ball.

The one thing that I do see that worries me, and I have started a thread about this, is the lack of deep throws. If you never go deep all year every DB in the country is going to start sitting down on, and jumping routes. Other than a few deep throws to the middle of the field to the tight end, I don't think I can think of a single deep throw that was completed to the WR down the sidelines. This makes 4th quarter comebacks almost impossible. Making DBs cover the whole field is a big part of what gives WRs an advantage over DBs. With Tx A&Ms lack of skill at the WR position, combined with limited route running, gives defenses a huge advantage.

Don't get me wrong, I agree he needs tons of work to get up to speed. But the talent is unmistakable. His backpetal, decisions, and release are so quick it is amazing. His accuracy and ball placement on slants and skinny post are just beautiful. He has a chance to be a REALLY special player. Then again if he is rushed too quickly, or if for whatever reason he doesn't improve, he could be a bust. But his upside is so much higher than any dolphin QB that I can remember. He reminds me of Steve Young. It took Steve awhile in Tampa and then some time behind Joe to get it all together but once he did he was in Canton.
