To think Miami is going to lose paul solia is silly. Solia is more important than any of Miami FAs because of his size and experience in both 4-3 and 3-4. Look losing this guy is going to create a "big" hole in the middle of that defense. Not resigning Starks may hurt a little but replacement in odrick is already in place. Look at the draft and the FA and tell me how many 340lb is our there. Teams would pounce on solia before they even bring starks in. Even is easily replaceable but not Paul. Memo to Hickey and Aponte, sign Solai now.

I'll stick with Grimes as a must sign more. Harassing Receivers successfully is an Art form.

Id like him back but he is replaceable. Other tackles will be on the market when teams start cutting players. Good chance Seattle might drop Red Bryant. He could easily slide in as a replacement.

no. do not pay skill position money to interior linemen, offensive or defensive. what a waste.

He's so important you don't spell his name right

Our run defense sucked last year. I don't think Paul is that great to be honest.

Bizarre statement, that he's not that great. A whole bunch of teams were salivating over him LAST YEAR, and this year it will be no different. He'll be getting paid. And I'm not looking forward to what our D is going to look like without him.

Not more important than Grimes. Thats for sure.

Disagree. Look at the Seahawks. Their DL & secondary is phenomenal. The LB's solid but pedestrian.

How does this apply to the post you are disagreeing with?

soliai is a good player but overrated if you ask me. would much rather keep starks, a much better pass rusher and almost just as good against the run.

It took Paul Solai a few years to come into his own. I remember there was talk of letting him go then. Letting him go now would be a huge mistake. He is healthy, never been seriously injured and excellent NT's are not easy to find. Our defense will be complete trash without him. We have too many other needs than to create a huge hole on the DL. He needs to test the market and then we need to sign him.
Our run defense was garbage because Ireland traded Burnett and Dansby for garbage. We saved a few millions but Ellerbee and Wheeler are not even good back ups. Now we have to replace out LB's.
We need to sign Solai and Starks and keep them 2 more years until we are finished regrouping.
Just my .02

Our run defense is designed to funnel the ball carrier to the LB's.
This same DL played well with Dansby and Burnett.
You are blaming the wrong players.

Pedestrian? Please. That whole defense is great.

If Soliai goes, we need to either replace his mass, or invest in some really good run-stuffing block-shedding backers and an excellent run-supporting safety. Both would be nice, but that's a luxury. I love Aaron Donald and it would be neat to see how a pair of quick, QB-attacking DTs (he and Odrick) would manage in run D. But, face it: we're not going to go with DT for the first pick. Won't be able to and it's gonna be slim pickin's by the second one. Maybe we pick up Daniel McCullers later on. At least he's gargantuanly large.

+1. The Carwash D.

bird33, I agree Starks is a much better pass rusher. But no way does he or Odrick play the run as good as Soliai. Remember few years ago when Jason Ferguson retired and Starks was going to be the heir apparent at NT? He was getting knocked around by Jake Grove in camp and that's when Soliai won the NT job, pushing Starks over to RE where he played at a Pro-Bowl level. With our run defense as bad as it was this past season (Soliai coincidentally played 12 games on a very bad knee), We need to keep all the good run stoppers we have.

I don't think Soliai is overall better than Starks, nor is he more useful for us. Soliai's position/size makes athletes like him more rare, yes, but that does not make him a pound for pound better player just because of rarity.

Starks is more effective overall, is more effective in the pass game, and ALSO commands a double team. Starks is a more talented player overall, more useful, and will give you more value. Thing is, I think our chances of signing Starks are even lower than resigning Paul Soliai. So I'd rather keep Starks, but if it's Soliai or nothing, I'll take him.
