Merling when he came out of college would have been a good run stopping 4-3 end. As it is, he's gotten fat, and is DT.

I didnt think he got mauled in the run game..He actually led the league in TFL for quite awhile during the year.

Well, you can believe what you want I guess. There are lots of articles that talk about him weighing 260 in his last CFL season (he put on 20 pounds from college to play DE), but I guess you know better. And clearly you know better than the people at Pro Football Focus who gave him a high rating against the run this year - you're right, he was squashed every play. Ok, you've convinced me, he'll never make it as a DE. :rolleyes2:
 
Odrick could play DE in a 4-3, but he was an AMAZING DT in college. I'd expect him and Starks as 4-3 DTs. Hell, I think that might put us in play for Devon Still or the kid from LSU.
 
if Philbin wants to switch then I'm fine with it....I do believe that Wake could do even better at End.....not sure about Misi in the middle but since he sucked at OLB is worth trying.

Dline could be Wake-Solai-Starks-Odrick. Having big Paul in the middle ala Wilfork will help against the run. Starks can give the consistent pass rush from the inside with a rotation of Merling and Mcdaniel. Have Odrick lose some weight and have him play on the strong side of the defense at DE. He has nice pass rush ability for a big guy and may get better if he dropped a few pounds. Wake would continue to be a beast unless somehow we could convince Houston not to sign Super mario and bring him in here and then trade Wake away to a 3-4 team. As for LBs. Not sure why we couldn't put Dansby at MLB, Burnett at Weak and Mitchell at Strong. If Misi oculd play on run downs inside and kick Dansby out to Strong side that would be sweet as well. This would be a pretty good run defense, pass rush could be nice as Odrick had 6 sacks this year playing a position that doesn't get sacks usually with some weight lose I think he could cause some trouble on the outside and still hold up great against the run. Starks would bring it as our UT.

I dont know why ppl think Misi sucked... he was in coverage alot....and its not like he got picked on..granted he is not great rushing the passer but you have to remember that the kid had been moved all around posistion wise in colllege...He is nothing special but he is good enough to be a starter on alot of NFL Ds
 
My line would include Solia, Starks, Wake and a Rookie DE or FA with Odrick the man coming in and out of the rotation.

Edit: If we do get Coyle, I could see him putting Misi where he put Manny Lawson, another former 3-4 linebacker, at SLB.
 
Draft Melvin Ingram to play strong side DE. Re-sign Soliai to continue to help free up our linebackers and solid run defense. Rotate Jared Odrick at the tackle spots. He is NOT a DE! Sign Dan Conner from the Panthers to play MLB. Allow Koa Misi and Ingram to compete for starting spot.

Front 7 should look like this:

LE: Ingram/ Misi
DT: Soliai/ Odrick
DT: Starks/ Odrick
RE: Wake
WLB: Burnett
MLB: Conner
SLB: Dansby

Looks like a top 10 unit at worst to me.
 
Draft Melvin Ingram. Re-sign Soliai. Rotate Odrick at both tackle spots.

Ingram/ Misi
Soliai/ Odrick
Starks/ Odrick
Wake
 
if we get mario williams then its a blessing to be back in the 4-3. mario williams could play defensive end in a 3-4 set and linebacker as well. he gives the best opportunity to disguise pass rush. put mario williams, odrick, starks, and wake in the 4-3 and you have a top 5 pass rush with out even blitzing
 
I'd much rather keep Soliai than Langford in this type of scenario.
 
Soliai is a "must" re-sign. Langford is the "goner". I believe Merling, Langford, and Soliai are FA's. Solaia and Langford being the two expensive ones. You can only keep two of the 3. And the odd man out is Langford. Soliai would be our version of Ngata and Odrick would replace Langford at LE. So Wake becomes the fulltime RE with Starks and Soliai at the DT positions with McDaniel rotating.
