Someone please explain this to me

I would argue there are three goals when employing this strategy.

1. Limit the number of opportunities.
2. Disrupt the rhythm of the QB and offense
3. Keep your pass rushers fresh.

If our pass rushers have a great game, then this strategy may work. If your offense has a couple of three and outs, then it is a waste of time.

The key is for the defense to put Rodgers on his @$$ as many times as possible. The guy hates being hit and pressured just as much as Brady does and sometimes gets even more rattled/angry at his teammates when he does get hit. THAT will be the key to the game.

God, I want to win this game so badly. I'm stuck up here in Packerland and would really like to stick it to these jagoffs. I'm also tired of everyone praising how classy Packer fans are. They walk around like their $h!t don't stink and think they're God's gift to football. They were also very rude when I went to Lambeau the last time the 'Fins played up there...

To give some idea of how important TOP really is here are some numbers for you. Over the last 8 years teams that won the TOP had a record of 1330-705-0 according to http://www.stampedeblue.com/2009/4/14/834798/finding-the-winning-factors-time so yes you are correct teams do some times lose when winning the TOP but over 65% of the time the team with the best TOP wins the game.

Because teams that execute better have more time of possession. The Kiick and Csonka thing worked because it was Kiick and Csonka. It would have worked equally well if the NFL had changed the rules and the clock had stopped after each run. TOP was simply a reflection of the fact they ran well. That's why I brought up the Bills-Giants Super Bowl. The Bills ran a no-huddle, so naturally they lost the TOP of every game. The Giants had a run-first offense with great defense, so naturally they won the TOP of every game. Winning the TOP is not a strategy. Running the ball well and playing good defense is.

Which, by the way, also applies to keeping your passrushers fresh. That works in a 10-play drive that consumes 4 minutes as well as in a 10-play drive that consumes 8 minutes. Because what keeps your players fresh are real time minutes, not game minutes.

Running the ball effectively wins games even if the ball-carrier runs out bounds and stops the clock on every single play, or even if you run the no-huddle. TOP is irrelevant in itself, it's just a reflection of good things happening for your team.
