.. like the abortive Kyle Orton trade, as it turned out we had a better FA in house already signed.

I'm tired of seeing the snide media and fan comments about "losing out, striking out," or whatever on Fisher and settling for the best of the rest.

IMO that's BS. Yes Ross and Ireland did fail in their attempts to sign this guy, and that's important but from we fans' perspective, I believe it's a relief that we came up short in that attempt and instead have signed a forward and fresh thinking offensive coach who's held in the highest esteem by his team, including the great Aaron Rodgers and if you read the forums, also by the majority of the Pack's fans. Compare that to this forum's opinion of Sparano, of Wanny, of Henning.. big difference. Very few here bemoaned their departure as a loss to the club like they are now in Green Bay.

Fisher was no prize; it's comical how just because legitimate winning coaches like Cowher, Gruden, Coughlin and Reid were unavailable, he was anointed as a game-changing "catch." What kind of "catch" delivers his fans 6 winning seasons out of 17? a 3rd and 4th place finish over the last 2 seasons going 14-18 in a relatively weak division? An anachronistic pre-2004 QB friendly regs "run first" mindset? 2 whole wins in the playoffs since the start of the new Millennium?

Now the argument is that Fisher was saddled with a cheap and meddlesome owner and that's why he understandably has control concerns if not outright issues. That's all fine and dandy until you consider that no one twisted his arm to renew his contract several times over the course of 17 years with this same restrictive owner, especially when he could have gone elsewhere. Whose judgment and inability to think beyond the obvious does that impugn? (it's sure not Bud Adams). Was he saddled with Vince Young by Adams? Yes certainly and that sucks, until you consider that VY went 30-17 for him, reflecting a helluva lot better winning percentage than Fisher's overall record.

Philbin is fresh off a great season with a disappointing end on the heels of an unbelievable Cinderella 2010 Superbowl championship having to shuffle his offensive parts resourcefully as key assets kept getting injured during the season. An OC who Rodgers credits with playing a large part in his professional and personal development. Unlike Fisher, he's got the psychological success imprint and positive expectation of winning.

IMO while there's no guarantee that Philbin's performances to date will translate into Headcoaching successes, the potential upside, even of the unknown is so much greater than what we reasonably can project that Fisher brings to the table.

Now Philbin wasn't my 1st choice, or 2nd or 3rd but I am quickly growing enthused the more I learn about him as a coach and an upright person. It would have been hard for me to muster the same sort of positivity had it been McCoy or Bowles.

So let's stop putting Fisher on an undeserved pedestal, and at least until the FH dysfunctional character kicks in, bask in the realization that for once, it looks like Ross, Ireland and Peterson came up Aces! Whatever the intents, Fisher didn't happen for the best of reasons and hopefully that's Joe Philbin!

Though I really have no care what the national media is thinking, I have yet to hear any say this was a bad hire. I think Ross did a very good job with this search. He stuck to his guns and declined to give in to Fisher knowing he would get vilified and made a very nice choice in Philbin. Nice job Mr Ross. I am very excited to see Joe put a staff together, whether or not he can bring Flynn to Miami and the draft. Hopefully this move pushes the Phins past a very dark decade and into a bright future.

The hiring of Philbin has me feeling a lot better today then I felt while Fisher was supposedly debating his future and his chance of becoming our HC was out there. I think in the long run we will have benefited from his decision and as much as the Dolphins where thought to be a joke because Fisher chose the Rams no one is thinking we are a joke today.

I shake my head over the Fisher courtship. For the life of me, I can't see where anyone can get excited about an outmoded thinker with a worse than mediocre seasonal record. Wish it hadn't happened. However, Ross acquitted himself very nicely in the way he worked the media into embarrassing themselves for a change, the deliberate, protracted and patient interviewing process and of course through his ultimate choice. Props to him the first time for putting the kibosh on Orton and now again for signing a desirable winning up and comer. I'm feeling pretty good this morning; don't know if I could have said that if it was McCoy or Fisher.

Ted, why do you have a picture of Mike Golic in your sig?

It's not just Fisher, although that was the glam move as he was anointed the best possible hire by the bobble heads at ESPN and he was the top dog we were in negotiations with. We dodged Billick as well, an apparently toxic hire to everyone else who was looking for a HC this offseason and others going back a few years. IMO he underperformed in Baltimore where he had the D to win 2 or 3 titles if he as this offensive 'guru' brought a little high octane to the other platoon. Never happened. Didn't see a return of Cowher & Gruden as pearls on a beach, either, although I would grant you they could have stabilized us at a minimum, and then maybe we get luckier than that.

Having said that, I liked Philbin above the rest once it narrowed down to the final three. Experience in a successful organization is important not only in that he was a strong contributor to the Packers, but he worked alongside other coaches who were very good at what they do. As he steps into the Miami situation, dysfunction should stand out for all the wrong reasons, and he knows his success depends on improving that which does not work.

Any assistants & QB he may bring from Green Bay can only help... an advantage he had in spades over McCoy, who I didn't dislike but wasn't terribly enthusiastic about.

Overall, there were a lot of bullets flying around us and although the search took it's sweet time and we were dealt some PR flesh-wounds in the process... they will heal when we start winning again on a consistent basis. I'm satisfied Ross did the best he could for our team at this point in time to turn the ship around. Philbin's staff, FA, and the draft remain critically important, so there is a lot of work ahead but it's an exciting time as the Dolphins turn the page and move forward.

What I really like about Philbin after reading about him is that he's not a meathead. This is a smart guy with a degree in Sociology from a tier 1 school and a master's degree from Tulane, which is not a school that lets any dummy into its graduate programs. This guy ain't no dope. I know that some people might be a little bit put off by that, but I think it's fantastic.

I've always believed that people who are a bit diverse in their interests and experience are better able to cope with new responsibilities and challenges. That's true in the business world, and Marv Levy (a very learned, even scholarly man) certainly felt this was true for him in his career as a football coach.

And one more thing to like about this guy: He wasn't chosen because he was a red hot name that Wayne could convince to sign on the dotted line, or a meathead who got the job due to cronyism. This guy was chosen because the front office felt he was the best guy for the job, and I think they chose him with a plan to bring in Flynn. So right now, I feel pretty good about this. I got to be honest, I wanted Jon Gruden and this morning I think I'm actually glad he's staying at ESPN.

:hclap: Very nice! I've never thought about it from that perspective but it does make a great deal of sense. I wish never really for or against Fisher being with the Dolphins. I was never sold that he was the answer nor did I feel that he was unable to have success in Miami. Water under the bridge now. He's not the option that was chosen and it's time to move on. Here's hoping that Philbin and his staff can do some solid work that will allow this team to improve significantly in all areas.
