He was released yesterday, for those who didn't know. Here's a signing that would make a lot of sense, to me:
-Smith still has something left in the tank. PFF graded him at +11.5 last season, and that was often against the best defensive back of the opponent. He works as hard in the offseason as anyone. He can be used in the slot, but is also effective outside, which would let us move Wallace around more.
-Brandon Gibson is a decent player, but he's coming off injury and would be fairly easy to cut. He could also be kept on as depth. Don't even bring up Rishard Matthews. I don't think anyone can type the sentence, "I'd rather see Rishard Matthews out there than Steve Smith" and be serious about it.
-Wouldn't cost a compensatory pick, as he was cut.
-The Ravens are pursuing him, and the Patriots are rumored to be interested, but neither team is flush with cap space.
I'll bet 1 year, $5 million would be better than what Baltimore has on the table (and hey, we know that kind of money is just a Matt Moore cut away!). Now, he might choose to take less money and sign with a contender or more prestigious franchise. I think it would be worth finding out. If nothing else, maybe it keeps the Patriots from swooping in and signing him...I don't want to think about what he and Brady could do together.
