Still early, but is this the most exciting draft class for a long time?

I still think 2008 was a good draft class. IMO the sharp decline had more to do with Sparano and his coaches then the players involved.

Very excited about Tripp and Landry.

Just think of how good this draft could have been if we had just signed a couple of more low priced vets to play the OL and drafted playmakers with those picks, instead of burning them on OL.

Matt Ryan was not the problem with last year's Falcons team. All ribbing of WV aside, he was the right choice in 2008 and is a pretty good quarterback.

It was very obvious that Ryan was going to be a better QB then Henne, but not exactly Flacco. Then again if Miami had taken Melty, we would not have an up and coming QB right now, but instead a QB that would always need plenty of talent around him to succeed, and once in the playoffs or an important game, failure would soon follow.

My big draft parblem came in 2005, when the over his head in the NFL College coach decided to take a RB rather then a A real franchise QB (unlike melty) that was sliding...if Saban had taken Rodgers, Miami would have been in many playoffs by now, and who know, a SB?

Show me all these guys in the regular season. What we're watching right now means virtually nothing.

I am excited about Tripp, and I'll warm up to Landry some more if he keeps it up. Can't ask for more than he has given so far though. Not real excited about this group now, but I'm excited about their character for some like Landry and a few others. So even if they can stick around and contribute and be reliable going forward, each one of them who can do that may help to serve as a foundation to build on.

I have absolutely changed my mind about drafting offensive linemen early. Roger Goodell has changed the league since 2008. It takes more points these days, particularly for the vital top seeds.

Besides, there's some fairly basic situational influence involved. Philbin is not going to run the ball anyway. That's been obvious since prior to his hiring. In the old days you'd grade offensive linemen both ways and I always placed more emphasis on run blocking. With this coaching staff the run blocking is a semi-afterthought. Pass blockers can be picked up later in the draft and from other outlets. Also it's fairly obvious that evaluating offensive linemen is not exactly a franchise strength at the moment so why force matters with premier picks?

I still think there's great value occasionally. Taylor Lewan slipped too far.

I hate to think back to 2008, when we drafted Henne. That was the year my mom suffered a diabetic coma and was hospitalized for months early in the year. Just when things turned for the better, she caught MRSA in a rehab center and it attacked her system. Mom went on kidney dialysis and died that December. I know it was my worst betting year in more than a decade and I'm sure it transferred elsewhere also. I probably shouldn't have been posting here or anywhere else given everything that was going on. I did like Henne entering that draft, overreacting to all the first half bets he won for me at Michigan. At least I wisely gave up on him quickly during his rookie year, after noticing the crank up delivery and lack of touch or instincts.

Toward our current draft crop, yeah lots of solid guys. We need great players. I'd take one great player per year above all the starting types or depth guys. I'll continue to assert we aren't going about it the correct way. Dion Jordan was a late riser up the draft boards who flunked the metrics. I posted that link several months ago. Ju'Waun James may patch a weakness but drafting a guy at 19 who was always rated considerably lower than that is not exactly going to scare the league.

I do have hopes of a more intelligent regime, for example one that would not have panicked and extended Reshad Jones.
