**Super Thread** Clowney/Tunsil Trade Rumor (merged too many times)

There is no way in hell this makes sense unless we give up very little and then let him walk at the end of season so we can receive a supplemental pick (could be as high as a 2nd). Otherwise, no thanks! Let another team give him boatload of money to an often injured played and is no longer lining up alongside Watt.

I think they said we'd know in 8 months on the QB thing. Either Rosen lets us know or we'll be drafting a 1st rounder next draft.
8 months from now is the draft. End of the season is 4 months away.

Supplemental picks start in the 3rd round not the 2nd. Best you could do is a 3rd round pick for Clowney.

Good write up and I'm starting to see this too. But more OL please.:)

Even if the Clowney pursuit doesn’t end successfully, I like the Dolphins’ aggression. I love the understanding that this ground-first reboot cannot come entirely from the draft. That a judicious trade or two for young stars are avenues to consider.

Shutdown corner? Done.

Premier left tackle? Done.

Elite pass rusher? Stay tuned.

Franchise quarterback? Wait eight months.

They are not there yet, no. But the Dolphins clearly are locked into the four essential positions as fundamental building blocks. They have a plan, and they’re going after it hard.

Sorry. IMO, taking on a high-priced player, particularly when not elite, is what teams do when their 1-2 pieces away. Miami isn't

It is my understanding that the Dolphins really like Justin Herbert and probably would of sold the farm to get him if he came out this year.

A lot can change in a year though and maybe Tua does end up being the top target.

At some point the rebuild has to start, where is it written that you can’t add pieces as you deconstruct the older part of the roster? If they think they can put together a solid defense that is young now, why wait. Let’s get this started already.

Love me some Greg Cote. However, what would Bill Bellichick do? He never dumps huge money into Defensive line players. Clowney might cost close to $100 million for a new long term contract. Very few players or positions are worth that kind of money long term which is why the patriots never do it.

I’d rather build through the draft for this type of position m, and when u have a good dlineman that is about to have his contract come up, draft another one. With the early injuries in his career, such a huge investment in a long term deal which is what he would really be looking for becomes even more risky. If we sign him I’ll root for his success, but I hope that we don’t. Not in this stage of our development

If he truly doesn't want to play in Miami it certainly won't go down but that being said if that's a smokescreen and he comes here I'd be okay with it but not for a first and preferably not a second

Someone needs to explain this "plan" because what I see is more of the same ole same ole.

We traded for a guy we don't believe in with Rosen. If we have to wait 8 months for a franchise QB then why trade for the guy in the first place? You could have drafted McCoy and gotten yourself a Center and continued to build an O-line to setup your new QB for success.

Trading for a high priced, underachieving defensive player also seems like something we've done repeatedly with no results.

I don't see a plan I just see business as usual for this franchise that can't seem to get it right.

I'm trying to figure out where you guys are getting this underachieving defensive player from. He's gone to 3 straight pro bowls. The only time he had a problem was his first two years in which he got hurt. Since then he's been on fire. Who else on our D has 29 sacks on their initial contract into the NFL. In 2018 with 47 tackles, nine sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He also had 16 tackles for loss, which tied for ninth in the NFL last season, and he now has 53 tackles for loss over the past three seasons, which ranks third in the league. This D has made Nate Orchard look good, so I can only imagine what a talent like Clowney can do in it. I'm starting to believe in our D coaches based on the fact this is one of the best preseasons I've seen in a long time for D. Now we just have to see if it translate into regular season games.

This was a point we brought up a lot when the Dolphins were pursuing Trey Flowers.

This is about as classic a rebuild strategy as you could draw up on paper. Secure premium players at left tackle, corner, pass rusher, and quarterback, and lock them up long term. They've got Howard on a fresh contract. They presumably would be securing Clowney with the intention of giving him a long term deal. Laremy Tunsil's extension is coming. And whoever they draft at QB in 2020 will be on a 5 year contract right away.

I liked the Cleveland model after Dorsey got there. They had been putting together defensive pieces and then hit the fast forward button and went and got Landry, Chubb, OBJ, and Baker all in one quick motion. Not sure how it turns out, but the early work acquiring defensive talent is what will determine how well all the offensive firepower translates to wins.

Definitely, it fits in a rebuild plan to add premium talent at 26. 29-30 is a different story.

The OL will be the agenda of the 2020 off season. As well as making a QB decision.

I like Rosen though so I like the teams potential more than those who see him solely as a stop gap to a top QB.

Thank you!!! All this under preforming player stuff is baffling, plus he is only 26 years old.

I am a believer in Rosen... and if Flores agrees, then this deal makes all the sense in the world. Getting a 26 year old edge for less than a #1 is a rare accomplishment.

With Rosen and Tunsil on rookie contracts, we have the cap space, and we will continue to have it for a couple more years as few of our players are in line for new contracts. Rashad and Kiko come off the books in the next two years as well...

IMHO, I don't think Clowney gets an $100 Million + contract. Him currently without an agent brings his "alleged" asking price back down to reality among other factors ( Early injuries in his career, speculation of work-ethic attitude). News changes fast on the daily; initially he was steadfast against coming to Miami. Now recent reports state that he's changed his stance and is "receptive" to possibly coming to Miami.

Detroit OVERPAID for Trey Flowers. Hypothetically speaking of course if Clowney agreed to a similar type of contract then it's $$$ well spent and a major coup.

If the FO doesn't try an get cute and stick to the script of their vision/philosophy regardless of W/L record at the end of the season then the Dolphins will be a competitive football team regardless. Next offseason a better idea of where the team stacks up talent wise, addressing missing pieces, etc. should come into fruition.

Just have to wait and see
