Not that I take everything written in the media as gospel but this backs up my theory that somebody (Joe Philbin) in the organization wasn't happy with what we had at most positions on the o-line given all the moves and attempted moves:

Last off season, coach Joe Philbin wasn't sold Martin was a capable left tackle and wanted a backup plan, two team sources said. Ireland thought the second-year player would develop and didn't make an expensive move for Kansas City veteran Branden Albert.

So when the incident involving Martin and Richie Incognito devolved into a bullying-themed mess, there already was a back story of tension between the coach and general manager as they met in Philbin's office to discuss the public situation.

What exactly was said isn't clear, but the November meeting ended with Ireland either storming out or being thrown out of Philbin's office. The two, never especially close, moved further apart...

Coaches had ample opportunity to see Martin's ability on both the right and left side. If they didn't want Martin, they leave him on the right. There's no reason to move him. You tell your GM to get you a LT to replace Jake Long, and he obviously will.

I've seen this coaching staff cut Vonte Davis with no replacement on the roster. I've seen them cut Reggie Bush without knowing if Miller could handle the load. I've seen them cut the FB's on the roster. I've seen them not even let Egnew see the light of day on the football field until he was ready. Nobody can convince me that this staff is timid and was somehow forced to play Jonathan Martin against their will.

If I'm the coach, and I know Martin is not my LT, then I'm leaving Martin on the right side and telling my GM that he needs to get a LT either in FA or in the draft, or else I'm playing Yeatman or somebody else. Your GM has to get you a tackle, he has no choice, period.

Who are the team sources? Aponte, Philbin, Turner, Sherman, Campbell, Zac Taylor? Pick any of them, or more. Nobody was aligned with Ireland, he was a sinking ship.

If you tell anybody in the NFL that our coach moved a player from right to left tackle, because they were forced into it by their GM, they'd laugh in our faces. You tell your GM to draft you a LT, or get one in FA. Period. If he says no, you go to the owner, and tell him, hey my GM didn't resign my starting LT, and refused to give me another one.

The reality, I'm afraid, is probably much more ambiguous, muddled, and about ego and misjudgements.

Martin was likely someone Ireland would never have drafted to begin with. He was finesse. He wasn't very strong. But it seems like an attempt to give Philbin want he asked for, which was the best LT in the draft which fit his scheme, after the Ryan Tannehill pick. Ireland did that. Martin was developing slowly. When reporters asked about Martin's strength, Philbin was very clear on it, he said he felt Martin was definitely strong enough. The reason he thought that was because the ZBS required athleticism and intelligence more than brute strength, and it's certainly way to early to judge a rookie, who not only has to adjust to the nfl, but has to adjust from RT to LT.

So here comes season two, now what do you do, after Long is not resigned? Well, you have a conversation with everybody. Ireland, Philbin, Sherman, are at least 3 people in that conversation. Obviously Ireland is going to ask about Martin. How is the guy you told me you needed last year, doing? If the answer isn't, it's not working and you need to find me a LT....if it's anything but THAT....then you can expect Jonathan Martin to be your starting LT.

When I say he has no choice, it's because he doesn't if he wants to keep his job. He's backed into a corner. On the other hand, if Philbin tells him he'll work it out with Martin, and he tells reporters that he feels "confident" Martin can handle the LT position, why would Ireland be desperate to sign Albert when he could use those extra draft picks for someone else? And keep in mind, if Ireland didn't want to sign Albert, he had McKinnie available, he could have given Philbin that player. He didn't. I'm telling you that I don't believe the story that Philbin was begging for a LT and didn't get one.

And why does Philbin have to tell Ireland what the team needs are, is Ireland a dunce or something? He doesn't realize if we lose a LT we need to replace a LT? This is how it works: Ireland gives Philbin 2 or 3 options between what he feels are good players at LT and if Philbin disagrees they are indeed good enough then guess what? Disagreements happen all the time, thats why one person is granted FINAL SAY.

Its clear somebody knew we needed help on the o-line, we should be able to agree on that at least. My theory is Philbin asked for help and Ireland wouldn't pull the trigger. Your theory is Ireland was the one that knew we needed help but Philbin talked him out of it.

Believe what you want but the fact that Ireland is standing in an unemployment line while Philbin is hiring his new offensive coordinator speaks volumes to me.

Final say doesn't include developing players, deciding whether to play them or bench them, or deciding what blocking scheme to use. That's all up to coaches. There's a division of responsibility, regardless. And Martin was not drafted to play RT, it was obvious they drafted him as a successor to Long.

They should both be on the unemployment line. But Philbin is new and deserves another chance (perhaps), while Ireland had his last year to get it right and failed.

What does that have to do with anything? You're saying if Philbin wanted another option at tackle all he had to do was ask, which is not true. He can ask but Ireland certainly doesn't have to oblige. And if they disagree on talent Ireland has FINAL SAY. I also sense you're saying Philbn should play the worst option at LT out of spite which is just completely ridiculous.

And Martin was not drafted to play RT, it was obvious they drafted him as a successor to Long.

Its obvious yet Ireland stated the opposite. Its obvious yet we offered Long a contract.
