Tannehill calls out Philbin

If we had not given up Spiller's kick off return Joe's strategy would have worked and we would have been up 10 to 9 i believe. Point is not trying to score before the half was not the reason we lost Sunday.
I always like going for it no matter what but i this case regrouping and coming out strong in the second half was not a terrible idea.

Bottom line- two thigs about this (to me)
1-Playing safe to not makes mistakes will NEVER get you to the SB.

2-Ross is an owner/fan. I guarentee you that the fan in him was asking wth Joe was doing handing the ball off with over 2 mins left, and 3 time outs. This is going on Ross' con list for the end of the season.

Ross is not even paying attention yet......

I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet but the one man that almost surely hated that decision to raise the white flag at the end of the half, Ross' newest adviser and he was probably sitting right next to him saying something like wtf is he doing...

Philbin made a mistake, the kind of play-it-safe mistake you see from coaches who know they are on the hot seat. Regardless of how well Tannehill would have ran it (given the rest of his game, not well), they should have ran it. Sink or swim. If Tannehill somehow managed to pull his head out of his ass and put some points on the board before the half, they'd go into halftime down two with a hell of a lot more confidence. Instead, they settled for limping in to the lockerroom with the coach showing no confidence in his offense. That's poor coaching.

It's easy to say that but then when your QB throws a pick six at the end of a half everyone screams "OMG how stupid can you be?!" There are no absolutes in football. Safe, defensive minded teams have won superbowls before and they will again. It may not be preferable to play it safe but a good coach (not saying Philbin is) will get the most out of his team. And sometimes that means knowing when your team is likely to hurt themselves or are simply at a disadvantage, and minimizing that damage.

The idea that "oh well coaches should just let them go for it and if they can't do it they shouldn't be playing" is just unreasonable. Players are human beings. When they are in a bad situation oftentimes their play will deteriorate. Not to mention you can't just pick a bunch of new players every year. You're stuck with many of the players you have, some of them for a while.

Playing it safe there was by far the most reasonable thing to do. They were only down 9 points, Buffalo was consistently squandering red zone opportunities while their defense was owning the Phins offense because they knew the phins couldn't run the ball effectively at that point. And more to the point, it worked! The offense didn't come out of the tunnel with less confidence. They came out with more confidence because they had a moment to breath, realize they were only down 9, come up with a smart gameplan and then they were actually able to move the ball with the half time adjustments. The wheels only fell off because players started making major mistakes giving Buffalo easy points and leaving our own points on the field.

Sigh .... you see that intensity in his face? Man I miss it. :boohoo:

Did the OP actually listen/watch the video? Tannehill is HARDLY "callling out" Philbin... if anything, he gives a supremely political answer - saying he's a competitor and wants a shot to score but also understands Philbin's views and his offenses inability to instill confidence in the coaching staff.

Tannehill basically took all the blame even though it was out of his hands, saying their play up to that point justified Philbin's decision.

We have enough problems with this team, let's not manufacture unneeded ones.

because the offense was pitiful in the first half so why go 3 and out and let the bills get more points for a bigger first half deficit?

I dont agree with what Philbin did. You can run high perc. stuff while in 2 minute O.

But I understand what Philbin did. He was basically saying the entire team was out of sync and not playing up to par.

I was eye level up fairly close. Nothing matched how pumped the Bills were for this game. Same ol story. its their super bowl every year, no matter what.

RT's accuracy was off but worse than anything else, special teams lost this game.

Anyone baggin on Jarvis Landry today? He should be so embarrased.

Tannehill was asked about that in the Press Conference and what he said was very telling. He said they did not give the coaches enough confidence in them to get the ball into scoring range with 2 minutes left in the first half and 3 timeouts. Folks, the message here is that Philbin no longer trusts his QB. The QB now knows his coach does not believe in him. Period. I am not going to kill Philbin on this because he maybe starting to see what I see.

Ah, internet bulletin boards... so riddled with confirmation and hindsight bias.
