Tannehill combined preseason stats: 86.5 QB Rating, Rest of stats below: Discuss

I have dumped pretty hard on Tannehill following last night's game, and he had at least 2 absolutely brutal decisions by my count, but here is what I will say for him:

I think he is going through his progressions better. He clearly decided before the snap he was going to Hartline on that interception, but on a number of other plays you could see him going "Nope.. nope... yep." Looked like there were at least two plays where Wallace was his third read that resulted in good gains, and on that nifty play to Clay, you could see him checking left and right before coming back over the middle to Clay.

So from that standpoint, perhaps we can be hopeful that his bad habit of deciding where he's going to go at the snap is something that is being coached out of him.

Personally I think that Tannehill decided that he wanted to get Hartline a score, because Hartline has struggled this preseason. Lazor's new offense somewhat devalues Hartline's bread and butter routes: double and triple moves only to open up space on the sidelines (going out of bounds) or coming back to the LOS (heading AWAY from vertical routes). Hartline needs long-developing routes coupled w. a QB that can throw timing well to zero-window openings -- if the quick slant is covered up, Hartline struggles big time. DBs can squat his routes. Now, add all this into Lazor's offense emphasizing the WRs quickly getting open and winning the man v. man, Hartline struggles. He hasn't looked good. Dropped passes. Inability to do his comeback stuff as much as he would like... and Tannehill wants to get him a TD. So he forces the ball. INT.

Doing a friend a favor and it backfires. To me it's that simple. It was obvious from the snap who was getting the ball.

I'm hoping Lazor being on the sideline helps to get him out of some of these funks by getting in his face a bit. But there is always the danger of that backfiring too and it forces him further into his shell.

Jay Cutler or Tony Romo would be the worst case scenario and a wasted decade. That would be a nightmare. God damn right I would complain.

I think that is right where he will end up. In the Alex Smith (2011 to now Alex Smith) to Jay Cutler range. Good enough to win a super bowl with a good team, but not great enough to win with an average-above average team. Just being a realist he will never become an elite quarterback. He lacks the mental aspect of the great ones like Peyton, Brady, Brees.

The same mouth breathers that complain about Tannehill would complain about whatever rookie we would draft to replace him if he doesnt pan out.
They're stupid like that and love failure.

So if Tannehill turns out to be very good
, but not elite, you'd still complain?

We'll talk about that when we get there.

As I have mentioned many times that I hesitate to call him a bust or bad but I also wait until I appoint him as a franchise QB.

Anybody who is realistic can see that Tannehill has not played what we would consider a franchise QB. As a matter of fact he plays very average. In year one it was "he is a rookie". In year two it was OL, receivers and everything else. But people seem to forget his lackluster performance in the last two games of last year's season which essentially cost us the playoffs. A franchise QB or a potential franchise QB attempts to carry a team in games like that and not regresses with it.

It is also easy to dismiss last nights game as just a preseason game. Of course. It fits. But there is a reason that the 3rd preseason game is usually considered the dress rehearsal. Teams actually do game plan and their starters play well into the third quarter. More often than not the third preseason game is usually an indicator for things to come.

And I hope that everybody is aware that it is not just Philbin fighting for his life as a Miami Dolphin. We are basically looking at 2011 all over again. Henne was in his third year (forget the first year where he only played in 3 games) and we all knew that this would be the year he is either gonna make it or break it.
Tannehill is essentially in the same position. Lazor and Hickey will not wreck their carries over a QB left over from the Sherman/Ireland days.

The OL looks somewhat improved, we may have a legit running game - there will be no excuses left for Tannehill. Oh wait: we can blame the receivers. The deep pass to Wallace was not catchable - period. Even if he would have kept on running the ball was just to deep. Anybody in the stadium saw it and knew it.
Besides that pass Tannehill had several times open receivers downfield and never even attempted another deep pass.
I find it also disturbing that our receivers are blamed continously for almost every mishap happening to Tannehill yet nobody gives them credit for the many passes thrown to high, too low or off which are being caught. Got to be fair.

He does throw nice passes at times but he also makes too many mistakes and for some reason just does not want to throw deep. An OC like Lazor will not go for that.

I still hope that he becomes our franchise QB. The investment alone is way to high to not get a franchise QB out of him. Top 10 pick, 3 years of attempted development. But if we all look realistically at it: the clock is definitely ticking fast.

I know that as Dolfans we are all a little bit QB challenged. And our standards have become quite low over the years. But there is no way that in year 3 we are happy with a couple of 10 yard passes and find all kinds of excuses for not finishing drives or the lack of a deep passing game - especially in a dress rehearsal preseason game.

I certainly hope that we start the season strong and Tannehill becomes what we all hope he should be. Right now though it is doubtful. And if we tank an early season start and Tannehill looks mediocre don't be surprised if Lazor pulls the pluck when we have the bye week. Game 4 then the bye week....reminder of 2011.

Tannehill apologists are trying hard to polish a turd.

Tannehill looked awful last night. Missed another wide open wallace td then a horrible int in the redzone..

But people seem to forget his lackluster performance in the last two games of last year's season which essentially cost us the playoffs.

Those two losses counted exactly the same as any of the other losses.

A franchise QB or a potential franchise QB attempts to carry a team in games like that and not regresses with it.

But they don't always succeed (see Manning vs Seattle)

If so, Dallas, Wash, SF, Carolina, Indy, Buffalo, (among others) are all screwed more than Miami.

The difference is that Henne showed no improvement from year to year.

How do you know this? Philbin claimed Wallace lost it in the lights "or something". Not exactly a ringing endorsement of his effort on that play.

This is just not true. Many want to blame Tannehill for everything.

He does throw nice passes at times but he also makes too many mistakes and for some reason just does not want to throw deep. An OC like Lazor will not go for that.

You are seriously projecting here. You have no idea what plays were called.

I still hope that he becomes our franchise QB. The investment alone is way to high to not get a franchise QB out of him. Top 10 pick, 3 years of attempted development. But if we all look realistically at it: the clock is definitely ticking fast.

"Attempted" development?

IMO, there is almost no chance of this happening.

Mental makeup? Really? Lordy lord do people talk out of their butts here.

I'll take an 86.5 QB rating. The only thing I'm still worried about is Tannehill scoring points. He can move the ball up and down the field just fine but we have got to score TDs not FGs to win the games that count.

Tannehill played like a bag of dicks last night. He was outplayed by Matt Moore. Anyone see Drew Brees sling it last night? But he never would have been successful behind our line....

After Brees`s 2nd season, you would`ve wanted him out of town...

Do you mean his second season, or his second season as a starter? :)
Well in 2002 he logged 16 games and netted a 76.9 QB rating, then played 11 and ended up with 67.5.... Tannehill with those stats=Airplane with cut Tannehill
edit: English is not my first language, Hi mite make mistakes....

On his second TD throw Colston's catch was a thing of beauty. I tried to imagine Mike Wallace or any other Dolphins receiver make that grab but I couldn't. Instead our #1 receiver is a one trick pony who doesn't even seem to be good at that trick and our #2 receiver suddenly starts dropping crucial 3rd down passes.
