Tannehill off to a good start with Philbin

Part of our problem has been that we have had DUMB guys playing QB for a while.

Harrington, Feeley, Lemon, Culpepper and Henne all seemed like they were unprepared mentally.

Pennington is the only one in the last 10 years (maybe Frerotte) that really seemed to have the intelligence and the sense of what aQB should do on the field.

Also we have protection issues. As bad as it sounds, if we are going to give up sacks id rather have it happen with our journeyman qb's and not our potential franchise quarterback. John Beck went into a shell shock in '07. Trent Edwards turned into a checkdown artist, in part, because of the Bills horrid line. And, most recently, Blaine Gabbert cant take his eyes off the offensive line because hes so concerned about being hit(though hes always had this problem apparently).

Tannehill isnt the only one learning. Our offensive line is still gelling and our receivers are learning a new system. Id rather be careful with Tannehill than throw him to the wolves to soon. I mean, lets face it, even the most optimistic have to admit we arent making a superbowl run next season.

Agree totally with this, sitting Tannehill for the year would be the best thing for him imo.
 
I don't want to be the bearer of bad news folks, but knowing a playbook doesn't make you NFL ready. It helps his progress tremendously, but it does NOT mean he will be ready to step on the field and produce.

There are many more factors than just knowing the plays. He has to have timing, learn the speed of the game, build familiarity with the offense and all of this takes time with a ton of reps to get where he needs to be before he'll start for us. Great start though.

Wow really? I was wondering why the guys from the big bang theory aren't NFL players. :lol:
 
Watched him on Gruden Qb camp and I was impressed, he was instructing the receivers on how to run routes. I'm feeling pretty sure about this dude right now

Totally agree. Not to metion the disection of NFL defenses, making proper reads and progression and exploitation of mismatches.
Much of this will be OJT, but he needs to have a handle of what's going on before he is given the keys to the car.
 
I was really impressed with his football smarts on that show with Gruden.

If Tannehill becomes a big success for us in the NFL, I wonder if he will cause a revolution in how QB's learn the game.

Maybe teams will start sending their QB's to all WR meetings and practices to learn everything about the WR position and route running.... it should help a QB understand a LOT and help his throwing

I agree with this for the most part. I totally agree that knowing the playbook is an advantage, but does not compensate for on the field performance and adjustments to NFL defenses. However, I also think that can be proven in training camp and the preseason. Now Im not saying Tannehill will or will not perform well and advocate his ability to be a day 1 starter...but at the same time Im not one who thinks we should sit back right now and say he should sit a year. I want to see him in TC and preseason before I say we should sit him for an extended period of time.
 
Knows it all in 3 hrs, huh??? Wish I was gullible, then I could believe it.

Next thing you know, we'll be euphoric we didn't draft Luck or RGIII.

Meh ... can't wait to see him in a real game to see what skills he's got ... none of that pre-season vanilla scrubs stuff where Henne looked like Canton material. lol
 
He already knew 75% of it from studying the last 4 years. now he knows 100% if it. Piece of cake! I would hesistate to start him at the beginning of the year. Going to Houston with one of the top teams and defenses in the NFL probably not the best way to start. I like week 9 against the colts if phins dont have a winning record by then.
 
The familiarity with the play book and vocabulary will give Tannehill as good a chance as anyone could hope to win the job. Does anyone know how well Moore and Garrard have been at learning new systems?
 
No way, he should not start day 1. The fastest I would consider bringing him in would be.... maybe halfway into the season. But not before.
