Tannehill signs

Kudos to the Dolphins for finding the right solution out of the mess they backed themselves into. As someone on another board had already described, by letting this get to the point where Tannehill missed four practices (two full practices, two walk throughs) they backed themselves into a corner. If they had suddenly dropped the demand for offsets then they look weak/incompetent and it hurts their negotiating position in future contract dealings. Therefore, the only way for the Dolphins to grease things back into action would be to make concessions that probably nullify the value of the offset language.

Yea gotta agree now the agents will know that the Phins mean business and the rest of the teams that caved in on the offsets are weak and incompetent.

Question before this season, how many times have we started camp with all our draft picks signed? I am talking about the Ireland era only.

Ireland has been pretty good in the past in getting his draft picks signed, he normally waits close to camp to ink them at least the higher round ones and I believe that about 2 days is thew most that has ever been missed.

It's really not news. Either way, he'll be third on the QB chart. They were ultimately going to sign him anyway. This does not change anything about the depth chart or whether he starts this season.

You'll find it works just about the opposite. No one wants to deal with unreasonable people ... and agents will increase THEIR DEMANDS & dig their heals in to compensate for it. Not to mention telling teams not to bother drafting their players from the get go.

If a team does "win" because they do have "leverage" ... the "loser" will hold that against them to their last breath trying to even the score at every turn.

Fair play = fair deals is the only way to go. its a win-win situation.

If agents and players hold grudges over contract negotiations and warn other players I am surprised Brees's re-signed with the Saints. I also would assume Brees' agent will have all his future clients stay away from the Saints. Also I would assume under this theory that Mike Wallace's agent will keep all his future players away from the Steelers.

lol

Contract negotiations hardly ever go completely smooth and if an agent holds grudges he probably isn't going to be an agent very long.

Adam Schefter Dolphins and Ryan Tannehill have reached agreeenent. He's now reporting.

Unsurprisingly, Dolphins first-round pick Ryan Tannehill’s “holdout” didn’t wind up lasting very long.

Tannehill will likely open the season holding a clipboard, but he could be starting by midyear if the Dolphins’ season goes as poorly as we envision.

Still not getting respect. I guess putting wins on the board will help solve this. Hopefully we can start hot out of the gate and prove some haters wrong.

Good that hes signed. Absolutely absurd this went on this long and our front office drew a line in the sand about something so utterly trivial.

Wow. One day of TC missed. Our season is over.

Sorry, but if you were working out a contract for employement, you would be looking to get the best deal you can. Be it employee or employer. If it lasted the whole of TC, then yeah, it would be an issue. It didnt, so really, its not a big issue.

Staying away and grudges are both YOUR theories, not mine.

I just said agents/players do not expect a position "outside the norm" .... & if they do ... they make their counter-offer "outside the norm" on the other side. I think your example & comment of hard negotiations is a total different topic.

The topic here is forcing "offset" on a player that is not done by most other teams ... "outside the norm" that's the point.

Nothing wrong with hard negotiations & disagreeing on a value ... players will just test the Free Agent market if unhappy ... that's how a players "stays away" as you term it. Heck, Brees filed suit & won ... got his money. Now he can file for Free Agency next year right ... so he can "stay away" unless they pay him what he wants.

I think the issue of not having Tannehill signed in time, in and of itself, is not a big deal. However, since it is coming at the end of an off season when the front office took a beating with the fans and media as being cheap (low balling Flynn...accurate or not) and difficult to deal with (Clark, NFL Network, etc...) this more than likely will get magnified as more proof those perceptions about Ireland are correct.

Will it have an effect on future free agents?

When the formula is already established for the contract and the monetary value is established, its laughable easy to work out the rest.....especially when all the employee is asking for is the same benefits that every other employee receives.

We drew a line in the sand for something petty and trivial. We were willing to cut our nose off to spite our face. Handing out huge contracts to injury prone offensive lineman while also trying to squeeze out every single penny from our franchise quarterback is one of the reasons why this team hasnt had a winning season in 4 years. We simply dont have our priorities straight.

LOL trivial?? So if Tannehill ends up being the complete bust that about 25% of the people on the board are predicting, the 6 mil we save in year 4 in cap space means nothing? What ever, Ireland was doing his job and I for one am thankful to him that he did.

Where in the world are you getting your numbers from? The deal is 12.6 for 4 years. I have not seen the breakdown but Aponte and Ireland are not dumb enough to pay 50% in the last year.

EDIT: Not to mention Tannehill and his agent won't allow a backload without a guarentee.
