Tannehill's Deep Post (and although it's been said many times many waysss....)

By no means am I calling for Tanny's head, but I agree with much of what has been said here.

21 yards downfield, from the far hashmark to the sideline is roughly 37 yards in the air. 30 yards (from the far hashmark) is roughly 43 yards in the air.

I don't think it is unreasonable to expect an NFL QB to be fairly accurate throwing the ball less than 50 yards in the air.

To me a long pass is one that travels over 21 yards in the air down field. You need to hit one of those every game to loosen the defense and make sure they are not crowding the line of scrimmage. ESPN Stat Splits track these type of passes so it is easy to see who hits these plays and who doesn't.

To me drops are in completions. That is all. If you want to count good passes thrown that is fine to make you feel good about your QB. But the long completion is the only thing that will make the defense back off the line of scrimmage. Being close doesn't get it done.

And yes there are 8 highlights you can find with RT17 last year. But you can't find 8 long TD's. You know the play where the WR gets behind the defensive and the QB has to deliver the TD throw. He hasn't even had 8 of those in 34 games. You have to make that play when it is there.

A good example of what I find acceptable is the long ball stats of Andy Dalton last year. He completed 18 of 67 attempts thrown over 21 yards in the air. Of those 18 completion 8 went for TD's. Only 3 of the 67 were intercepted. 1 long completion every game on average and 1 long TD every other game. This opens up the LOS for the Bengals and allows them to run and make good plays on the short passes.

To me this is a bare minimum to be a playoff team.
Notice I am not expecting top of the league production

Peyton Manning 32 of 67 with 10 Td's and 4 Ints on these same type of passes. 2 per game and more than 1 TD every other game.
http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/1428/year/2013/peyton-manning

In his rookie season RT17 was 15 for 45 with 3 Td's and 2 ints
http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/14876/year/2012/ryan-tannehill

Last year RT17 was 12 for 58 on these type passes with 3 TD's and 4 Ints
http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/14876/year/2013/ryan-tannehill

so for this year 0 for 3 with 0 TD's and 1 Int
http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/14876/ryan-tannehill

So that is only 6 long TD passes in 34 games. Not going to cut it and that is why the LOS is being crowded by every team that faces us.
Hope this help explain my rationale.

PFF breaks it all down nicely. If you just look at just passer rating and not their stupid PFF stat Tannehill is third worst out of all the qualifying QBs at passes 20+ yards. Its surprising Flacco is the worst and attempted the most passes, so that should give some hope. Its not surprising however that Henne is the second worst and that should make us extremely worried...

This is my theory on Thill and maybe i'm wrong. He's just an athlete trying to get by, make some money, and later become a doctor like he has always wanted.

I think Tannehill's dad is a Bill's fan and he used genetic alteration to design the perfect QB that has been brainwashed to covertly help the Bills win games...

and his cousin works for Pro Football Focus. LOL.

All of this because A. we are so starved as a fan base for a winner and B. we were spoiled all those years with Marino magic. Lets let them play out a few more games before we burn Tannehill at the stake.

Serious. I don't understand the comment. There is not many here who actually lived through all the Marino years. I saw Marino from the draft to his bitter end. I was spoiled the first few years after his retirement. But I also recognized that he was at the end of his career. After almost 2 decades you can not talk about 'being spoiled by Marino' anymore.

I just have the desire to find a friggin QB.

Quote from Marino last season "Single high saftey I am slinging it over the top" or something similar to that
The big difference is confidence.
The perfect pass can't be defended.
If RT is hopping as the OP stated we are in for a long season.

That's the thing though - you can teach footwork or attempt to alter passing mechanics, but you cannot teach a guy how to let it rip. It's two parts instinct and one part confidence. To this point Tannehill looks nothing more than a guy with flashy physical attributes who every now and then throws that laser to the outside shoulder across the field.
