Let's compare where our team is now compared to last year by additions and losses:

    Additions-Wilson, Amendola, Quinn

    Subtractions-Suh, Landry, Parkey, Timmons

Am I missing anything so far?

So far that covers it I think.

Bringing back Aikens and James if you want to include resignings

Just didn't know if you wanted to include them or not.
Hopefully this has all been a sick cruel joke, but i doubt it

Someone posted that we are only 1.9 million over the cap now. So we gotta cut some more. Thomas? Pouncey? Wake? Who else?

You're missing a supposedly 29 year old TE who played like a 39 year old last year on your subtractions list.

Also keep in mind the addition by subtraction law. Locker room cancer's are gone with fresh blood brought in to re-invigorate the team as a whole. Hopefully the team finds leadership or #17 can be that leader that this team has been sorely lacking.

Considering the contributions of Timmons, Pouncey, and Thomas, I'd say yes. However, no one will know for sure until Jan, '19

it is a better team. More smart players and way more leaders. More speed at WR and better o-line which goes a long way to making the team better.

And Lippett over Verner. Hopefully the injury bug doesn't hit us hard before we even start the season as it did last year.

    Quick analysis:

    Additions-Wilson, Amendola, Quinn, Sitton, Kilgore

Subtractions-Suh, Landry, Parkey, Timmons, Pouncey, Thomas

    1. OL: Sitton + Kilgore > Pouncey + Bushrod
    2. DL: Quinn + Salary Cap >=< Suh (unclear whether this is an upgrade or downgrade at this point, particularly with the dead cap space)
    3. WR: Wilson + Amendola + 4th round pick > Landry (Amendola's health and whether Wilson can duplicate his performances in KC make this one a wait and see, but the draft pick should push this in our favor)
    4. LB: Salary Cap + Loyalty > Timmons (Going AWOL to your former team in a "wish I were here" moment is demoralizing for your new teammates. Good riddance.)
    5. K: Salary Cap = Parkey (Parkey earned his pay, and I'm sad to see him go, but we _need_ cap space so he becomes the sacrificial lamb. Not sure this isn't a loss for us, but we have no choice).

All in all the changes so far have been about changing the culture, and I'll take a wait and see attitude on that. But, on paper, it looks improved. Some decisions were essentially out of our hands, such as Landry and Parkey, so we did the best we could with those. Some were drastic decisions like Suh and to a lesser extent Timmons. Unclear how those will play out.

But, the OL moves are hugely positive and absolutely needed. IMHO, those are the biggest moves we made because we changed the unit from a bad unit to a potentially good unit. Losing Suh will hurt though. He played almost every snap, constantly demanded a double-team, still created interior pressure, and played solid run defense. Quinn offers us something different, outside pass rush, but it is doubtful that he will be as productive these next couple of years as Suh will. Huge amounts of dead cap--really shocks me that we are letting Suh go.

Pouncey hasn’t been wanting for interest since earning his release from the Dolphins earlier this week. In addition to the Colts, both the Buccaneers and Chargers are reportedly eyeing Pouncey, although Tampa Bay’s current level of intrigue is unclear given that it signed fellow interior lineman Ryan Jensen. Los Angeles, meanwhile, is reportedly meeting with Pouncey today.

Actually we gained two quality receivers that are cheap (Both considered very intelligent, leaders, and rarely make stupid mistakes or penalties)
Lost a very good receiver that was asking way over what Miami could pay (Though great heart, and very intense, was known to draw at times Penalties)
Though Landry is a better receiver, the two receivers make Miami's roster deeper, and smarter to get open more consistently... Gained

Miami gained two Quality interior Linemen that are leaders, and consistent quality players.
Miami lost a talented Center (Who is always hurt, or one play away from it) who's bets days were far behind him.
Easily a huge gain this coming year for Miami, with Two linemen they can count on, not the ? at center... Gained

Miami will gain a talented LB this coming year that was one of their top draft picks last year.
Miami lost a LB that is on the decline, and was more concerned with his old team, then Miami.
Unless McMillan's Knee injury is not 100%, he will still be more effective then Timmons and his Pitts home sickness...Gained

Miami lost one TE that was horrible and non-existent last year
    .
Miami, though they have yet to pickup another TE, there is no way he will be as ineffective as Thomas was.
Big gain here, because Miami will not only try to get another TE, I believe they are committed to getting a premium TE...Gained

Miami will get back Tannehhill, and will bring in a healthy quality backup.
Miami lost way over his head Jay Cutler, plus older & injured Matt Moore.
If Tannehill is healthy, this is a huge increase on Offense, whomever they get to be backup will only be Icing on the cake...Gained

Miami gained a great pass-rushing DE in Robert Quinn on the d-Line.
Miami lost a great DT Eventual HOF in Suh.
Though Miami helped make the D-Line better on the outside, they lost a special player in the middle...Weaker

Miami also lost a weapon in their Kicker, while really gaining nothing on special teams...Weaker

Miami has a couple of positions where they are weaker from last year with plenty of gains, but with FA and the Draft, those few weaknesses might be history also.

I agree with almost all you say. Two tangential items no one can predict
    1) can Gase reduce penalties.
    2) can he reduce missed assignments
If he can't, improved talent won't help much

This is why the players coming in are also known for their intelligence, and able to pickup, execute the offense as practiced during the week.

The coaches can do so much, that's why Gase said it's not enough to just be in class and practice, player need to make the extra effort, and take the playbook home with them, and if player were not going to take it seriously he would find those that would.

I agree though, those two questions you ask will prove to make this a special offense, or same old with different players.

If you use a bunch of complimentary adjectives one could argue yes. If we are talking about wins, then no. I see us drafting in the mid teens come April 2019.

I think we will spread the ball around more on offense, and hoping the Offensive line gels with all players being able to practice together. I think we add a TE, and see what Smith offers at The RB position should he get more time then last year. My concern is do we have enough up front on the defensive line. Have a great day bro.

I think we're a lot smarter, we'll finally have leadership on offensive, the line is as complete as it's been in over a decade, and we should be improved at getting to the QB.

I like the direction we're headed into considering the limited resources we had to work with in FA.

Now to the draft. It's all on the draft. The draft will make or break 2018. If we land a QB at #11 then we will have to evaluate it differently. Otherwise, they've got to hit on multiple first year starters in this draft, especially at LB and TE.

I honestly liked this years FA period.

Got better on OL, got deeper at WR.

Now the draft, we need a playmaker on defense. We need a LB or S to change how teams play Miami. And enforcer who leads.

    We need Derwin James.

Hearing Fede is gone but can’t find anything on this. Anyone know?

As for “are we better”? On paper just looking at talent levels, no. For what we want to do as a TEAM, yes. It should show up in fewer drive killing penalties but we shall see.

The other big wildcard for me is the RMillan kid. High hopes but he hasn’t played a down - coming off of a knee and no experience. How much can we realistically expect from him? Need to get more play making LBs in here.

Drafting an elite TE will take the team a long way. Can they do it? We’ll see.

Their first pick will be another big move for the team assuming they hit on the right one. BIG draft coming in a month.

Fede is not under contract with anyone. he's a solid rotational guy, but with Quinn, Wake, Harris, Hayes and Branch i can't imagine him coming back.
