Tebow on the Trade Block, Miami Dolphins a possibility

Not with a 5 yr $33 million contract.

That $33 million figure is including all the incentives he doesn't have a shot in hell of achieving, especially now.

His actual deal is 5 years, $9.75 million. There's an additional "log" bonus (as in, should be as easy to achieve as falling off a log) where he'll get an additional $1.5 million if he plays in 45% of snaps in 2011, 2012, 2013 or 2014. But, if he moves to TE/H-Back...that's going to be hard for him to achieve unless he becomes the #1 TE. Also keep in mind the Broncos will have already paid some amount of that $9.75 million in up front signing bonus. That means they have to eat whatever they already paid him on their salary cap, and it makes him even cheaper to the team acquiring him.

CK, what about the 6.275 million that is supposedly due on September 2nd?

Guess it was a delayed signing bonus or something like that?

You know, I looked at his contract . . . I think he has a 6 mllion dollar bonus due on September 2nd if I'm not mistaken. Denver may cut him instead of paying him that.

Where were you able to see that? I'm not aware of any $6 million bonus. That seems rather sizable.

Incidentally one reason you'd want to trade for him instead of getting him after he's cut is so that you bypass the waiver system. We don't have top waiver priority, we have #15 waiver priority. We wouldn't get him if we didn't trade for him.

I'm not seeing that. Is it the result of an incentive he earned last year?

Base salary

2010: $1.295 million (fully guaranteed)

2011: $1.618.75 million (fully guaranteed)

2012: $1.942.5 million (fully guaranteed)

2013: $2.266.75 million (fully guaranteed)

2014: $2.590.5 million ($567,500 guaranteed)

Advance/Signing bonus

$975,000 on Friday (salary reduced to $325,000)

$6.275 million due 29 days after start of 2011 league year. Typically season starts March 1, but it's written this way in case work stoppage delays start of season. (Salaries from 2011-14 reduced to offset advance)

One-time playing time bonus (contractually considered likely to be earned)
Tebow collects $1.537.5 million if he plays 35 percent of the offensive snaps in 2010, or 45 percent of the snaps in any of the seasons 2011-14. The bonus rolls over from year to year until Tebow reaches the playing-time threshold, and expires the first time he hits it.

Mid-tier incentives (Contractually considered unlikely to earn)
Value of Tebow's contract doubles from $11.25 million (including one-time playing time bonus) to $22.5 million if he reaches multiple thresholds, including:

55 percent playing time in two of his first three seasons, 2010-12, or 70 percent playing time in 2013.

The Broncos make the playoffs, he reaches certain QB ranking thresholds, and receives unspecified honors.

Max value (contractually considered unlikely to earn)
The total value of Tebow's contract can escalate to $33 million if the Broncos reach the playoffs multiple times in his first four years, he has multiple top 5 QB rankings, and he has multiple league honors such as NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP.

29 days after the league year starts is September 2nd, 2011.

Tebow got screwed by the lockout, as he would have normally gotten his bonus in March.

i can envision Ross instigating this for more glam-buzz.. After passing on Mallett in the second and not moving up fast enough in the 3rd, I'd be more than a little pizzed if that's what we spend to acquire him.

IMO when it comes to QB fundamentals, our own Devlin possesses considerably more upside.

I'm not seeing that. Is it the result of an incentive he earned last year?

Kawg is right, there is a large bonus due him on a certain upcoming date and it was mentioned on the NFL network. Not sure what it was for but it is substantial. Without having to pay that, sure, take him but if they cut him he is going to go somewhere that will promise him he will get a shot at QB. Hell, I would promise him that and then do with him what I wish to do. I would not sign him for more then 3 years and no way for more then 1.5 year. Load the contract up with incentives to make mucho if he meets them.

$6.275 million due 9/2 gets him traded cheap (from all the camp reports of his passing skills).

I could even see him getting cut.

I don't think he's worth the roster spot. Owner might want him to sell tickets (our 3rd string QB hasn't shown anything).

Thanks. Excellent find Kdawg. It makes sense to me now:

"$6.275 million due 29 days after start of 2011 league year. Typically season starts March 1, but it's written this way in case work stoppage delays start of season. (Salaries from 2011-14 reduced to offset advance)"

That's the key part of it, what I highlighted. The total contract value that Miami would be on the hook for is still $8.42 million from 2011 thru 2014, with the potential for a $1.5 million bonus if he gets 45% snap participation in any year. However, the bulk of those salaries are fully guaranteed and what happens on September 2nd is those guaranteed salaries get reduced to minimums, while the excess gets scraped off and paid up front.

So Miami would be in effect "signing" Tim Tebow to a 4 year, $8.4 million contract with $6.3 million in guaranteed money, and a $1.5 million incentive bonus should he play 45% of snaps or more in any year.

That's a decent deal. Absolutely. That's an excellent deal for Miami. Don't wait for Denver to cut him, you won't get him. He'll get picked up off waivers.

CK do you think he brings more to the table than Clay as an H-back type guy ?

Why?

He would be a team distraction. I can already hear the TEBOW TEBOW chants now.

He is slipping down to #4 on the Denver QB depth chart.

He doesn't fill a need or bring anything to the team.

Switching him to another position, there are probably better guys available.

But... Tebow jerseys will sell like crazy! Screw it, I'm in for an 8th round pick and a dozen donuts.

I think the Colts should pick him up. Nobody is going to seriously suggest he replace Manning and he can sit on the bench a couple of years and learn how to be an NFL QB. Any team with a questionable QB situation including the Dolphins and Jets are in for a nightmare if they grab the guy. He can't play at an NFL level yet but the fans don't care.

Another Tebow thread. EXACTLY what we needed. As if the other 2-3 on the front page weren't enough. Tebow's a great person, good for him. But great persons don't make great football teams, talent does. And Tebow's talent as a QB prospect is as bad as you'll find.

So we can pretty much assume Denver is going to cut him, but it would be in Miami's interest to still trade for him and get him at his current rate and guarantee his services?

If that 6.3 is given up front, his salary is peanuts for the next 4 years.
