Dolphins | Mare Says No - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
6:28 PT: Alex Marvez reports for the Sun Sentinel Miami Dolphins PK Olindo Mare does not want to restructure his contract. An NFL source said Mare declined a request to convert roughly $400,000 of his $1.5-million base salary into an incentive package so the Dolphins could create additional cap room.

seems like players do not like incentive-based pay. IMO all K and P should be paid the min plus incentives since they are the only 2 positions that truly have some degree of control - though Ps more than Ks

Ok, now Olindo had a crappy year last year. .. He hardly ever put the ball in the endzone on kickoffs, and he missed some seriously crucial field goals... And then to Kick the ball off out of bounds and basically seal the fate of the season...? That was suffocating....

He's a really, really, good kicker.... and he'll probably (hopefully) kick much better this year... But from this fan's perspective, a cap friendly restructure sure would be a nice way to show some accountability for last year's dissapointments.... ....IMO

....F@%&ing kickers! :fire:
(they make great skapegoats)

He is the highest paid kicker in the league I believe, he should at least be willing to convert it into incentives. :yell:

Bring in some competition for Olindo...

and if we luck out with a good prospect...he can Mare on out of here.

Why would we want Mare gone? Lest we forget all the games where our whole game plan was defense and Mare. I can't count the games he has won for our team. Maybe he is being an ass about restructuring his contract. Look at all the special team struggles around the league last year. All the sucky kickers others have to live with. Mare would be a welcome addition to ANY team in the league.

What the hell though. Every player on our team gets bashed in here and people argue to cut or trade them. Madison, Thomas, Fiedler, Marion, Surtain. Why not the kicker?

Relax...

I said bring in some competition. No ones job is ever really safe.
Chances are that Mare would beat the competition...but the reality is that he had a bad year last year.

Deal with it.

The NFL is largely

a business...albeit a sometimes unconventional one...
If you don't perform well you get replaced. The fact of the matter is that Mare cost us last year when it mattered the most...

yes he made a great kick against Denver, but he had a substandard year...

add to the fact that he wasn't interested in EASY to REACH incentives and why not suggest a little competition.

Its nothing personal to Olindo...
its reality.

A down year doesn't equal a down career. I assure you that he has helped Miami far greater than those unfortunate incidents last year hurt us. It's unfortunate that fans have been relegated to the attitude that players cannot have slumps without fearing replacement. I'm not saying I agree with him that his contract should not be ammended to help the team. Why waste time with a competition that may strain the relationship between the team and the eventual winner? Why waste the money at all?

Because it happens all the time...

and with various injuries you don't know if he will be the winner...
it costs virtually nothing for an undrafted free agent kicker to come in.

I have dealt with it and am ready to see him rebound this year. I just think it's dumb for anyone who is a fan to insinuate that they would not want Mare in a Miami uniform next year.

Man, it's getting BAD in here guys. Has it gotten that bad for us fans that we are calling our Kicker over $400 K? Whoopee. He had some problems last year, mostly due to minor injuries in his foot. He has been solid for years, so he has earned that money. What fans tend to forget, is the pay day the players get, is generally for what they have already accomplished for the team. Mare wasn't crying when he got the minimum for being an elite kicker. Now, he has an off year and fans are up in arms. If you want to get all fired up about the cap, how about looking at our highly paid defense?

I am looking at them too...

left coast...

I am just not a big believer in big bucks for kickers, and I don't think they are immune from criticism, especially when the refuse a restructure off a bad year.

Hey, I am not saying jettsion him...just let's get him back in gear with some good competition and let the best man win.

If he has another "Off" Year we find another Kicker. IMHO

I guess I took this a little personal because I like Mare a lot. He has only been the best Dolphin kicker ever. I disagree about kickers not making good money, they are a huge difference maker.
