The 2006 Boston Red Sox Thread

Schilling vs. Santana tonight GREAT match up. Can't wait to see this game.

A few notes: Keith Foulke is on the DL with a bad back and elbow. I think it's safe to say that Foulke is probably finished as a Red Sox and possibly a pitcher in general. I can't believe how fast this guy fell, considering how well he threw in 2004.

Van Buren is back up with the team and besides his mop up outing vs. the Yankees last Monday he has pitched pretty well. Timlin is back up now which helps the pen a lot. I really hope Francona throws Van Buren and Delcarmen more in tough spots instead of the duo of Tarveras and Seanez. I want to see what these kids can do instead of the other guys because we all know what we're getting with them.

I'm not looking forward to tonight. We can't beat Ted Lilly consistently, forget beating Johan. I'm just glad we won't see Francisco Liriano in this series in addition to Santana.

I can see us being tortured by Santana, Joe Mauer and his absurd .380+ batting average all night long.

If we find a way to win this game tonight, I'll be extremely pleased.

It's going to be a looooooong night at the plate.

Funny thing is Santana in his career has trouble against the Sox, he's 3-3 with an ERA over 4.00.

greatttttt dueeel!!!

It's a great game so far. Santana is showing why he's the best pitcher in baseball tonight. Just sitting down the Sox right and left. Thank god for our captain though

Very good game until the 12th. Gonzo played great tonight going 3 for 5 and got robbed of his 4th hit. The bullpen minus Papelbon and Timlin suck. Taveras just sucks, the Sox should just cut their loses with him and Seanez and send them packing if they can't trade them (who would want them anyway?)

Schilling pitched well, he deserved the W, but Santana pitched even better and deserved the W as well. Both teams bats were dead tonight and with Clement going tomorrow I don't like the Sox chances. They never seem to play well in Minnesota.

I can't wait until the Sox get out of Minnesota, we never seem to win there and they're not at the moment either.

Matt Clement is hurt.. That is great news..

Clement is such a fairy and it seems to me that every time he has a poor performance (which lately is almost every start), he has an injury (or any) excuse to fall back on.

I'm not buying it, just like I never bought how the line drive off the bat of Carl Crawford was the catalyst for a putrid 2nd half in 2005. There should be no free passes to guys making 30 million dollars over 3 years. He should just tell the media that he sucks and be done with it, forget all these excuses.

I mean honestly, when was the last start that you can remember where there wasn't a question as to the condition of Clement's health after the game? It's been a while.

Driving home from work, I was listening to WEEI (as usual) and apparently the Red Sox made a trade today. They send David Riske to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for Triple A Charlotte pitcher Javier Lopez. Lopez is a sidearm style lefty, which was desperated needed especially now that Keith Foulke is on the DL again for what could be an extended period of time. The first thing that jumps out at me from this trade is that the Front Office is definitely clearing way for the return (and extended stay) of Craig Hansen.

Now I don't know too much about Lopez, so when I got home I read the Boston Globe and RedSox.com.. here are some pieces from those articles on the trade that offers some insight into Lopez...

Lopez, 28, who was picked up by Boston in the Rule 5 Draft in 1998, was traded by the club to Colorado in March 2003. General manager Theo Epstein said a thorough scouting report by the Red Sox showed that Lopez has shown tremendous improvement since then.

In 26 appearances with Triple-A Charlotte, Lopez went 2-1 with a 0.55 ERA and 12 saves. He did not allow a run in his last 9 1/3 innings over eight appearances. He held left-handed batters to a .171 batting average.

In his big-league career with the Rockies and Diamondbacks, Lopez is 6-4 with a 6.09 ERA. He's allowed 22 percent (26-of-118) of inherited runners to score, and he's held left-handed batters to a .246 average.

Epstein said Lopez features a mid-to-high 80s fastball with plus sink, an above average slider and a changeup and cutter he uses on righties.

"He's a very uncomfortable at-bat for lefties, but he has been effective against righties," said Epstein. "I'm sure Tito [Francona] will use him to get out good lefties, but he's not a guy you always have to yank after a 1/3 of an inning."
