The 2006 Boston Red Sox Thread

I respect what Theo Epstein has done with the Red Sox but that Bronson Arroyo trade was horrible.

Ok here's the deal with the Arroyo for Pena deal: This isn't a one year deal, this is for the future. Wily Mo is 24 years old and has tons of power (something the Sox farm system lacks which is power from the OF). With Wily Mo the Sox have a right handed bat off the bench and a platoon with Nixon who can't hit lefties to save his life. Also with Wily Mo, the Sox don't have to waste money to resign Nixon as they have his replacement on the team now. Also considering Pena's age he could also take over for Manny Ramirez when he retires.

Arroyo is putting up great numbers this year no doubt but he's also playing in a weaking league and division. The NL is a joke, if he was in the AL he'd probably be 6 and 6 with an ERA over 4.00, no one would be making a stink about it. If Arroyo wasn't doing well no one would care either. Arroyo is nothing more than a 3rd starter if best don't let those NL numbers fool you. Also people forget that when Coco Crisp and Nixon were injured, Wily Mo CARRIED the Sox offense because neither Manny or Ortiz were hitting around that time. Wily Mo in 112 at bats had 4 home runs, 18 RBIs, 12 runs scored with a BA of .321 and an OBP of .370. Those are pretty good numbers until he got hurt.

I loved Arroyo as much as the next Sox fan but I can't say that this trade is horrible. Sure it hurts the Sox a little when we have guys like Jason Johnson, David Pauley, Lenny DiNardo and Kyle Synder pitching as a 5th starter but I'm not even sure if Arroyo would be in the rotation if everyone was healthy (Clement and Wells) and even if Lester was up and one of those guys were healthy.

Arroyo would be in the rotation. To even compare him to Johnson, Pauley, DiNardo, and Snyder is asinine. None of them would have started a game for Boston had Arroyo still been around.

That said, Pena is an investment, certainly, and one that could pay off. One thing's for sure, though, if he replaces Manny in left, there will be no difference on the defensive side of the ball.

Ive always been kind of a Willie Mo fan, but Arroyo was a decent starter, and untill Clement comes back you are going to be in a little trouble every day with Johnson pitching

Very excited for tonights game, Ive always liked seeing knuckle balls, and tonight will be better since none of them have probally ever seen one

I wasn't comparing Arroyo to Johnson, Pauley, DiNardo and Snyder. What I was saying is IF Arroyo was on the team and Clement and Wells were healthy he wouldn't be in the rotation. And even if one of Clement or Wells was healthy and Lester, Arroyo still might not be in the rotation. I said that the trade hurts when the Sox have Johnson, Pauley, DiNardo and Snyder pitching every 5th game.

Pena was pretty bad in RF at Fenway but that's not an easy OF to play. He was very good in CF which was surprising. Manny is a very underrated defender. He's no Willie Mays out there that's for sure but he makes all the hard plays hit to him. It's the easy plays that he sometimes screws up on. If you watch Manny play 150 games in the OF for the Sox you'd know he's not as bad as the highlights on ESPN make him out to be. Sure he has his moments in the OF but so do a lot of other more well known glove guys.

Now, now.. I could argue Manny is having a GG year in LF.

Ortiz and Manny are turning this game into their own batting practice display.

Good call on that 11 to 3 Marlin's win

I conceeded this game before it started anyway, I just knew you guys would win.

But remember it doesnt matter if you win by 1 or 10 it only counts as 1 game and after tonight the series will be split 1-1
