The 2006 Boston Red Sox Thread

sweep oakland please:pray: :beg:

A sweep is asking a lot, especially in a 4 game series. But with how the Red Sox starters are lined up it isn't crazy to say taking 3 out of 4 out of the question, especially with the way Oakland's bat have been. The Sox will face Zito, Haren, Blanton and probably Loizia (not in that order), so it'll still be a tough series.

is Rich Harden still hurt? Was he ever hurt? What's the deal with him?

Rich Harden is the AL's Mark Prior. The guy has a ton of talent and when he's healthy he's almost unhittable but his problem is he's always hurt with something.

There are rumblings up in Boston that the 5th starter may be in fact Juilian Tarveras. The Sox have been impressed with him pitching multiple innings the past few games and are strongly thinking about it. They want Johnson to go down to Triple A and work on some stuff.

Some Red Sox news:

Jason Johnson was sent down to the minors.

Papelbon doesn't expect to pitch in the ASG (1 out max he said) due to him pitching a lot over the past week, the RS F.O. and Francona asked Ozzie to give him rest. Can't say I blame them.

More about the Abreu to the Sox rumor:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/jon_heyman/07/10/scoop.maddux/index.html

"There's some scuttlebutt that the Red Sox and the Phillies could work a trade around two high-profile outfielders, Bobby Abreu and Trot Nixon. The Red Sox would likely love Abreu because he has consistently high on-base percentages (.447 this season, .413 lifetime). That might not sound like much of a deal for Philly, but it could help the Phillies in two ways: Nixon is far cheaper, and also carries a reputation for having a gung-ho demeanor, contrasting with Abreu's laid-back rep. "Nixon's the right one to get,'' said one NL exec. "He'd get that clubhouse moving in the right direction.''"

I'm not sure how much truth there is to this rumor, especially considering Nixon is a FA after the year and it's not guaranteed he'd stay after the season. But if there is a deal on the table the Sox would be foolish not to do it. Abreu is way better than Nixon. I'm sure along with Nixon a pitcher or two would go in the deal (maybe Abe Alvarvez or David Pauley). I'd be interested to see if the Sox oculd maybe get John Lieber thrown in the deal too.

:sidelol: Can't be worse than Clement.... or Johnson.

Seriously.. As far as the 5th starter goes, it really can be anyone, as long as the rest of the guys are healthy..

Believe it or not, I like the idea of Tavarez in the rotation. The problem is where do we turn when we need someone in the pen to eat innings in long relief? Lenny DiNardo or Abe Alvarez? No thanks, I'll pass.

But I definitely wouldn't be opposed to seeing Tavarez in the rotation if the FO isn't sold on Pauley AND can find another long relief guy to fill Julian's void in the pen.

I'm not sure if it aired yet or is airing tonight but with anyone with NESN might want to check out the program about Bill Lee. It should be a very interesting and funny program.
