From Theo:
"We came close on a lot of things … countless opportunities we were pursuing …We have a long term plan and as much as we desperately wanted to do something to help our big league team, it would have been short-sighted to sacrifice that long-term plan. It just wasn’t worth it.
"Very disappointing [not being able to make a deal]. We have a lot of people in the front office and scouts that worked very hard to get things done.
"In the end, we gathered around everybody, thanked them for their hard work. We’re proud of the process, and proud of the results… There’s always an opportunity for waiver deals." -- 7.31.06, Theo Epstein on the trade deadline
I'm glad they didn't go out and make a move just to make one. Looking at some of the names that got traded, none of them would have made a big impact other than Bobby Abreu. I mean I'd rather stick with the guys we have now, including the prospects in the minors than trade a "Freddy Sanchez" for a Jeff Suppan and have it be a non-factor.
Sure getting Andruw Jones would have been nice but trading Coco, Hansen AND Lester? No thanks. Way too much to ask. Kip Wells? See Jeff Suppan.
Well the Sox need to step it up now. They haven't played well since the All-Star break and now with the trading deadline over there's no excuses it's time to play baseball.
