The Chicago White Sox Thread

If White Sox GM Ken Williams is overwhelmed by an offer for Joe Crede be it from the Angels or another club he might make a move. But as he prepares for next week's winter meetings, Williams insists he is not shopping Crede.

In White Sox GM Ken Williams' world, pitching is first, and everything else is tied for last. That's why Williams' goal is to parlay Freddy Garcia or Javier Vazquez into a younger workhorse, like the Angels' Ervin Santana or prospects John Danks of Texas or Jason Hirsh of Houston.

In making a huge splash at the Winter Meetings, the Phillies landed right-handed starting pitcher Freddy Garcia from White Sox for right-handed pitcher Gavin Floyd and a player to be named later. That player is expected to be left-hander Gio Gonzalez, and will be announced after Thursday's Rule 5 Draft.

Floyd was 4-3 with a 7.29 ERA in 11 starts for the Phillies last season before being optioned to Triple-A on June 3. The fourth overall selection in the 2001 draft, he turns 24 next month.

I do not like this deal at all. :nono:

Bad deal for you guys, you have the Mets dangling Millidge and heilman for a starting pitcher and you guys trade for those two?

Tell me now, who would you rather have had, a pitcher with a 7.era or Heilman and Millidge, that is 10 times better then what you got.

You guys were jobbed.

Yeah, we got screwed. Garcia was fine for us, if any pitcher on our team needed to be traded it was Vazquez.

The White Sox are the "mystery team" in the Barry Bonds sweepstakes. Some reporters spent part of Wednesday working to identify the Sox as the team that seemingly spent the day meeting with Bonds and his agent, Jeff Borris.

Well Garcia is a UFA after this season I believe. I don't hate the deal I think it was just unloading Garcia. I would rather have Millidge or Heilman but who knows what was offered. I don't know what the Sox want to do but I don't think they're done making moves. I'd hate to see Garland go but we'll see.

The problem is you got junk for a front line starter, someone would have gave you more.

I think the key to the deal will be Gonzalez but it was more about opening a spot in the rotation for McCarthy. Garcia is not a front-line starter. He was good down the stretch but he was inconsistent all year. I think his arm is shot but that's just cause his MPH were way down for most of the year. It did creep back up late when he was having success but that's when he was throwing a new pitch. Guillen has put alot of miles on the arms of Buehrle/Garcia/Garland. With the Royals throwing around 11 million a year for Gil Meche I think the desperation for pitchers may have gotten the Sox a better offer later in the offseason although it may have left them with 6 starters and McCarthy in triple-A. I don't like Williams but I don't hate this deal. Garland and Buehrle are ground ball pitchers so I think they'll bounce back after subpar years. Although Garland was the ace the 2nd half. Buehrle is a UFA after next year and bringing in Floyd leaves the Sox with his potential replacement.

ESPNEWS reporting Jon Garland next to be traded, possibly to the Astros, since Pettite goes back to the Yankees.

Well, at least we won the title in 2005.

Nowhere on the White Sox general manager's schedule was any sort of time allotment for completing a trade with the Astros, sending Jon Garland to Houston in exchange for pitcher Taylor Buchholz and center fielder Willy Taveras. In fact, Williams and the White Sox strongly denied a report posted on the Web site of the Houston Chronicle that any such trade involving these particular players was imminent.

The White Sox are hesitant to discuss a multiyear contract with Joe Crede, who is recovering from lower back problems that didn't require off-season surgery. There's always the possibility the Sox could deal Crede.
