The Dion Jordan Selection May Have Sealed Ireland's Fate

so far dion jordan hasnt done ANYTHING. so everyone flaming the guy who started the thread are clueless. when exactly was he a sack machine in college? oh yeah he didnt rush the passer often. but according to all you experts hes gonna be a monster pass rusher. there was a report from the miami herald that some in the organization are dissappointed with his training camp and doubt he can have an impact early on.... thats just splendid coming from the 3rd overall pick....who was injured when he was drafted!

Should he have 8 sacks already?

This guy has second coming of JT written all over him. You will see an impact this year, even if he only gets limited playing time

I think he'll be better and I think he's going to have a greater impact than most think.

It certainly was a risk taking him, even more amplified by trading your high 2nd round pick to move up to get him. At the same time, once Ireland got Wallace/Hartline/Gibson under contract for multiple year . . . he addressed the biggest need on the team . . . . Playmaker on Defense. Dion Jordan is a playmaker on defense, the highest rated defensive player in the draft and your GM went up and got him. You have to respect that a little bit.

Personally, I wanted Ireland out the door with Sparano, but if the man is here, you have to try to have a little faith in his decision making instead of bashing every move and next move that is made by him.

Ireland's fate is still tied to Ryan Tannehill, regardless of what happened in this past draft.

Yep, I think the entire staff is tied to Ryan Tannehill at this point. Dion Jordan could put up 10+ sacks this season . . . if this team is sub .500 again and Ryan Tannehill shows limited improvement, that is all that is going to matter.

The dude seems to be built like an NBA small forward and his shoulder may not ever be able to take an NFL-level pounding. How often to guys with bad shoulders ever get to 100% health and effectiveness? It seems like 'turf-toe', one of those things that just never gets right. I hope I'm dead wrong here, but the guy you trade up for in that situation is a guy like Bruce Smith, a guy who has some girth and the power to flat-out pancake a LT, not just use quickness to try and run around. If Jordan could somehow put on 30 lbs of muscle, then we have a conversation.

None of the picks will make an impact? I believe that will Davis and Dion Sims have already made decent contributions and will likely make much more on the near future. Jamar Taylor looks like he is ready to make a move soon, looked good against Houston. Just because Jordan is hurt doesn't mean ****. I think he will make a big contribution this year as well. Hell even gillislee has shown he.can bring something to the table. I have no idea where you're getting this idea that this draft class is a total failure. Not only is it way too early to tell, but almost every single draft pick has shown good signs so far.

Honestly it's probably silly to draw these conclusions so early.

However, I'm trying not to be dismissive. Jeff Ireland most definitely took a chance with Dion Jordan. And yes indeed, there's a significant chance the gamble goes tits-up.

Think about it. He traded a 2nd round pick to move up to #3 overall and take a guy that they know full well is only going to be a 500 snap guy as a rookie...a situational pass rusher. An Olivier Vernon.

That is a *rare* decision, that high in the 1st round. When the Seahawks took Bruce Irvin to be a situational rusher, they did so at #15 overall not #3 overall.

The best precedent was when the 49ers took Aldon Smith at #7 overall. But you know what? That was a gamble too. I think Baalke and Harbaugh were comfortable with the gamble because they were fresh into term, they didn't have any fear of getting fired after one year because a high pick rookie didn't play enough or effectively. And the next year they take A.J. Jenkins in the 1st round which kind of drives the point home.

The gamble paid off with Aldon Smith. Right away as a rookie that guy was tremendous and produced 17 sacks (counting "half sacks" as sacks, as PFF does).

Everyone keeps saying don't worry about Dion Jordan's lack of snaps, he's going to be like Aldon Smith. But what if he doesn't PRODUCE like Aldon Smith? What if he ends up with let's say 6 sacks as a 500 snap situational rusher? What's everyone's mindset going to be in that case?

And in the mean time despite Jon Martin playing fairly well in the preseason when things don't count, what if he starts playing poorly during the regular season?

You've got a General Manager whose contract is expiring this year. Clearly the owner wants to see results before he re-ups him, or else he'd have done it already. So indeed...when we look back we could be thinking to ourselves that taking Dion Jordan #3 overall did indeed seal Jeff's fate. And that's not even assuming Dion becomes a bust. He could still become a premier player inthe league.

Taylor seems to look the part of a complete corner. Agreed.
Dallas will be at worse a quality Guard by probably mid-season. This is pure homerism. He has shown nothing at all to suggest this.

This is actually an opinion more then homerism. My thought is, in Miami trying to force him to compete at L-tackle, he has not looked good, once they allow him to just try to get used to the NFL playing guard, he will start showing better power and technique to compete.....not saying he will start, or be really good, just saying he will be a quality player that in a pinch, you can bring in and not get burnt. You are right though, nothing shows that it can be written in stone he will succeed.

Davis is the most opportunistic corner on the team, eventually will be a dangerous player. His great strength is his ball hawking. His great weakness is his liability to give up big plays. Til he gets that figured out, he's a liability.

But he is normally in position, will take the right angle and normally does come down with the INT if he has a shot, once he does learn to not allow receivers to get behind him, he will be a dangerous player to go after pass wise (Running is another question).

Simms is our most complete TE, and will probably now have a great chance to start. Hopefully Egnew starts, and hopefully Egnew balls. Fins have to change the entire offense if it starts Sims. But every team needs a player like Sims, agreed.

I agree that of all the TEs, with the athlete Egnew is, he would be the ideal player to hopefully take enough of a big step to take the starting job, but I don't know if he can, at least with Simms, he can do what the coaches want to see in their starting TE/RBs, he can block, and is not that bad a receiver.

Sturgis will be our starting kicker for many years to come. Yup.

My point is this years draft was far from bad, in fact, could be one of the best in a while.

You all are assuming Dion Jordan was Ireland's pick. Ross has already said he had asked Ireland to make a move for Dion Jordan based on input from the coaching staff.

Its pre season....the actual season has not even started. Once Jordan's shoulder gets better, he will be a force....and he can easily add 10-20 pounds in the next few years. I don't even want to risk him getting injured, so I am totally fine with him rehabbing rather than playing. Our D-line is stacked as is, and we don't need to rush him onto the field in his first year. He is a project, but he will pay off in the future. I would not doubt his ability to get about 10 sacks this year either.

I bet this thread will be a lot more interesting during the bye week. :d-day:
