In 03 Gagne broke the record when he converted like 80+ consecutive saves and didn't blow one the whole year (Papelbum has blown 3). With 2 pitchers being under 20 wins it doesn't matter their ERA, they weren't going to win it and with Ortiz's ERA in the 3's when others had better ERA's, you can see why the nod goes to Gagne!

As far as 92, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that this was one year where a starter could have easily won it but Eck was 7-1 with 50+ saves and led relievers in just about every catergory. Papelbum might not get to 50 saves (a magic number for closers), is tied with 2 others right now in saves (so he might not even lead the league in saves), doesn't lead in strikeouts for relievers, and has blown 3 saves, as many as Todd Jones, Tom Gordon, K-Rod, and more then Mariano, Ray from Baltimore (lol), and Bobby Jenks. (plus Gagne blew none and I don't know how many Eck blew but I doubt it was many). Papelbum's ERA is fantastic and if he keeps it up and the Red Sox say win the division or win a tight Wild Card race and he saves a few in the clutch then yes, I would say that Red Sox fans have an argument. But remember with relievers, he's two or three bad outings away from that ERA going up and making his season look worse then it's been. With starters, they can have a bad outing and it won't effect their numbers as bad because they log so many innings. MikeO is right, unless Papelbum doesn't do something great like not blow another game or doesn't give up another run the rest of the season, with the likes of Mussina, Schilling, Wang, Verlander, Liriano, and Santana all having great seasons, I'd bet money that one of those 6 (just one) are going to keep on the pace their going over Papelbum being perfect the rest of the year!

Sorry but you both missed my entire point. MikeO was saying the only time a reliever won the Cy Young award is because there was no quality starting pitcher and in 1992 and 2003 there were quality starters that the award could have gone too.

Guys not winning 20 games doesn't mean they can't win Cy Youngs. I have no idea where you got that idea from. Go back and look at Pedro Martinez's Cy Young in 1997 and 2000. Or Maddux in 1994 or 1995 when he won the award unanimously. Or Randy Johnson in 1995,1999 or 2000. Sure its a nice thing to have but that doesn't mean you can't win the award.

Since we agree with 1992 I won't go back over it, but don't you think the Cy Young award in 2003 could have went to Schmidt, Ortiz or Prior because they lead their teams to an actual playoff appearance and that they had good numbers? Yeah Gagne didn't blow a save and had a great year but you can't say those other 3 guys didn't deserve it or weren't quality pitchers.

I have said in other posts and threads that Papelbon probably won't win the award because the other starters have very good numbers however he definitely deserves votes and will probably make the top 5, possibly top 3 if he continues his pace.

I do agree with everything else you wrote though. If Papelbon doesn't lead the league in saves or has a few bad outings he doesn't have a shot. As far as blown saves who cares who has the same numbers of blown saves or who has more or less. The guy blew 3 saves but still has an ERA of 0.50. Wouldn't you rather have a guy with 3 blown saves (and only have 1 game that you lost) with an ERA of 0.50 than a guy with 2 blown saves (which resulted in 2 losses) and an ERA of 1.92?

Nice sweep by the Yankees this series, they really showed the Blue Jays who the better team is. This series basically kissed the Blue Jays playoff hopes alive unless they get really hot (Twins hot). Randy going tomorrow and that is going to be an interesting thing to keep an eye on because of what happened to him Saturday and because of the fear that something might be wrong with him. Lidle was great today, Abreu is going to fit in really well (you can just tell) and Craig Wilson is a huge upgrade over Phillips with the stick. I won't get to excited about Lidle because Ponson pitched well in his first start and we all know what happened his next but I do feel Lidle will be giving quality starts and that definitely will help this team down the stretch. Jorge and Mo got a rest, the Yankees won, and hopefully the Red Sox lose tonight so the Yankees can create some space between them (even if it's only a game). So far it's a good day but that'll probably only be until the Indians trot that kid out there again tonight to give up another game!

Good Sweep by the Yanks and a huge one. The new guys are already stepping it up.

BTW- Travis Hafner and Shin Soo Choo are my hero's:D

Toronto is basically done and now we are 2 games up in the L column. Let's hope Randy bounces back tonight.

Cano will be back next week!

Robinson Cano - #22 - Second Base - 6'0" - 190lbs
News: Robinson Cano went 2-for-5 as a designated hitter Thursday for the Rookie GCL Yankees.
Impact: Cano is scheduled to play three games for Double-A Trenton starting Friday and rejoin the Yankees next Tuesday. (Thu. Aug 3, 2006)

Bad news on Matsui

Hideki Matsui - #55 - Left Field - 6'2" - 230lbs
News: Hideki Matsui (wrist) was not cleared to resume taking batting practice following his examination on Thursday, making an August return unlikely.
Impact: This is quite a surprise, considering that his recovery seemed to be going according to plan. With Gary Sheffield also unlikely to return before rosters expand, it seems likely that Melky Cabrera will remain a regular for the rest of the month. (Thu. Aug 3, 2006)

This is why the Craig Wilson trade took place. He is insurance because the odds of Sheff or Matsui returning in time to make an impact are slim. And the odds of them returning and actually being productive are even slimmer.

Cano stated tonight he was ready to return to the big club. The Yankees will probably stick with the plan and have him return when they head to Chicago but either way Cano's return is coming soon. Randy was very average tonight and didn't strike out a batter for the 2nd straight start which is scary but the Yankee bats bailed him out tonight (especially Wilson and Jorge) so everything worked out good. Another great effort from Villone who is quietly having a great year and is definitely becoming a go to guy out of the bullpen. Anyways Moose is back on the mound tomorrow and I hope his quest to 20 continues. I'm going out to the fight at MSG tomorrow but I'll get to see the game since it starts at 4 so it's going to work out well for me tomorrow (full sports day). 5 in a row for this team and I am really hoping we can sweep the Orioles and stay on a roll!

By the way, where the hell did Fernando Tatis return from? I haven't see this guy forever and next thing I know he's in the Orioles line-up and hitting a homerun none the less. It was weird to see him, I thought he was long gone from MLB!

Wang will get some votes. It will be interesting. Will Mussina and Wang split votes and will Santana and Lirano split votes. All hurting each other being teammates?!

And this will be a year where NO closers will get any CY YOUNG attention because so many good starters are having good seasons. Closers only get attention in years where the starters arent doing much of anything.

:sidelol:

I've been away for a while on vacation, but thanks for welcoming me back with some comedy relief.

Wang won't sniff the Cy Young and that's a fact. He's not on the level of Liriano, Santana, Papelbon, Halladay and even Verlander with his recent injury.

He has MORE wins and FEWER losses than Santana. If Santana is in the running then Wang is in the running. Period.

Im not saying he will win, but he's in the race. Nice way to make a mountain out of a molehill :shakeno: :shakeno: :shakeno: :shakeno:
