I don't like Brian "yes Mr. steinbrenner" Cashman, we need bob watson back, he knows how to build a championship team.

To be fair, Buck Showalter and Gene Michael also helped build that Yankee dynasty.

I don't think Cashman has ever been a "yes man". I think he proved it during the offseason when he wrestled control away from the Tampa inner circle. Steinbrenner will ultimately make the final decision no matter who the GM is, but I think Cashman has more control now than any GM ever has under The Boss.

JMO (waiting for MikeO to yell at me and tell me I'm wrong)

The thing is like2god we need to rebuilt this team around strong pitching and good defense, we are going back to the 80's yankees, great lineup, poor defense and poor pitching Cashman is signing every big bat, but he's signing injured and old pitchers.

Cashman's going to be in charge this season. If things hit the fan, Steinbrenner will start talking and taking actions again. Right now he's giving Cashman the benefit of the doubt. If the Yankees don't make the playoffs you can throw that out the window!

Exactly, I would love to get rid of Sheffield and stay away from every big bat on the market. If we were going to make a trade involving guys like Hughes, Melky or Duncan I would only want to do it for a young and established pitcher like Santana or Willis. I don't think we have a snowballs chance in hell of getting either one of those guys, that's why I said let Sheffield walk and try to sign Zito in the offseason.

Quick background, I never wanted Sheffield on the team for two reasons. Number one, Vlad Guerrero could have been had for the same price and maybe even a little bit less. Number two, Sheffield admitted to purposely throwing a ball over the head of his third baseman and into the crowd because he wanted to be traded away from the Brewers. That isn't the type of person I want on my team. And then he was whining about his contract before this season started, he is a selfish player and I don't like him.

Again, just my opinion.

Just a thought. Considering Arod's struggles with throwing would anyone be shocked to see a few bunts dropped down the 3rd base line tonight? I know if I were a manager I'd have someone like Gary Mathews Jr. or another good speedster drop one down and put extra pressure on him.

(Note: This isn't a knock on Arod or the Yanks, just a strategy question.)

It's smart thinking on your part. Just like when people like Thome or Ortiz are playing the field its smart to test them as wel. If teams DON'T test Arod on the field and maybe drop a bunt or two down they are crazy in my opinion.

Good point you brought up.

More Gene than Buck but both get credit. Showalter was an awful manager and its no surprise that wherever he leaves the team wins (NY and ARIZONA).

Buck is tied too tight, and his teams play too tight. In 95' when NY lost to Seattle blowing a 2-0 lead, Buck was 100% to blame. He refused to pitch Mariano more cause he felt he wasn't ready (yet he was unhitable the entire series) and he managed "tight"

Laird did it once tonight and it was a hell of a bunt that he beat out, nothing Arod or any other 3rd baseman in baseball could have done and he had a good throw. I'm just surprised someone like Gary Mathews Jr., Mark DeRosa, Jerry Hairston or even Wilkerson (who was awful tonight vs, RJ) didn't try to drop one down, they all have good speed. It's worth a shot and if Arod ever made another throwing error it would be a huge advantage to them during the whole series.

I agree with you about Buck and remember the 1995, he went with a very tired and hurt David Cone instead of Mo in Game 5 late in the game if I'm not mistaken. I'm not a big fan of his but he knows how to build a good team (again to be fair he helped the DBacks build their championship).

And yes Gene Michael deserves the most credit, he's one hell of a scout.

The Yanks after the 95' season had 2 deals on the table. One to send Jeter to SF and the other to send Marino to Seattle. Both were almost pulled off in the winter, but Gene talked the big-wigs in NY at the time out of it. He told George not to watch the first 3 months of the season because he wasn't going to like what he saw out of Jeter at SS. Said, tune in come early July, just don't watch anything the first 3 months.

How would things be different if THOSE deals would have gone through!?!?!?!

I never heard about the Jeter deal, but I did hear about the Rivera one. Who was coming to the Yankees for him? Wasn't it their SS at the time?

Who do you guys think is the best closer? Mariano Rivera, Papelbon, or Trevor Hoffman?
