FinsNYanksFan13 said:Wang is awesome, end of discussion. Tonight was a good win with contributions for everyone. A-Rod is slowly but surely coming out of his funk. I think he's going to go on a tear and is going to shut a lot of people up. Tomorrow we go for the sweep with Lidle. We need a quality start from him so I hope he doesn't go out there and try to be perfect and just settles down and pitches his game. I like the way this team is pitching and playing and I think the Yankees look like a World Series team and are as good as anyone in baseball. Once again Wang is the truth. If a couple of guys slip, he's going to get some CY Young talk if he keeps this up!
MikeO said:Wang will get some votes. It will be interesting. Will Mussina and Wang split votes and will Santana and Lirano split votes. All hurting each other being teammates?!
And this will be a year where NO closers will get any CY YOUNG attention because so many good starters are having good seasons. Closers only get attention in years where the starters arent doing much of anything.

Ray Finkle said:Sorry but Jonathan Papelbon will get plenty of attention. So far he's only having the greatest year of any reliever in the history of baseball, playing on a winning team in the playoff hunt. Right now he has the lowest ERA out of any reliever pitching over 50 innings this far into the season. Not to say Papelbon will win the award but he'll probably be in the top 3 if he continues this pace. IF the Red Sox win the division and the Twins don't make the playoffs I think Papelbon will have a real shot.
And you're wrong about closers only getting attention in years where starters aren't doing much of anything.
MikeO said:No, I'm right. The only time closers get attention is when there are no quality starters.
Lirano, Santana, Mussiana, Wang......one of those 4 will win it. Palpebone won't win the award this year. Might finish Top 5, but I don't see him near the top of the list
Ray Finkle said:No you're not.
In 1992 when Eck won it, there were 3 guys who won over 20 games (Morris, Brown and McDowell) and 2 guys that won 18 (Clemens and Mussina) Clemens also lead the AL in ERA and was 3rd in Ks. Every pitcher but Morris had an ERAs of under 4.
Morris was 21 and 6 with a 4.04 ERA. Brown was 21 and 11 with a 3.79 ERA. McDowell was 20 and 10 with a 3.18 ERA. Clemens was 18 and 11 with a 2.41 ERA that lead the AL. Mussina was 18 and 5 with a 2.54 ERA.
In 2003 when Gagne won it, Schmidt went 17 and 5 with a 2.34 ERA and Mark Prior went 18 and 6 with a 2.43 ERA. Russ Ortiz was 21 and 7 with a 3.18 ERA.
If those aren't quality starters I'd love to see some that are.
Eck won it in 1992 because he had the greatest season of any reliever up until that point. In 2003 when Gagne won it he had a better season than Eck. Now Papelbon, if he continues on his pace, will have the greatest season of any reliever in the history of the game.
FinsNYanksFan13 said:In 03 Gagne broke the record when he converted like 80+ consecutive saves and didn't blow one the whole year (Papelbum has blown 3). With 2 pitchers being under 20 wins it doesn't matter their ERA, they weren't going to win it and with Ortiz's ERA in the 3's when others had better ERA's, you can see why the nod goes to Gagne!
As far as 92, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that this was one year where a starter could have easily won it but Eck was 7-1 with 50+ saves and led relievers in just about every catergory. Papelbum might not get to 50 saves (a magic number for closers), is tied with 2 others right now in saves (so he might not even lead the league in saves), doesn't lead in strikeouts for relievers, and has blown 3 saves, as many as Todd Jones, Tom Gordon, K-Rod, and more then Mariano, Ray from Baltimore (lol), and Bobby Jenks. (plus Gagne blew none and I don't know how many Eck blew but I doubt it was many). Papelbum's ERA is fantastic and if he keeps it up and the Red Sox say win the division or win a tight Wild Card race and he saves a few in the clutch then yes, I would say that Red Sox fans have an argument. But remember with relievers, he's two or three bad outings away from that ERA going up and making his season look worse then it's been. With starters, they can have a bad outing and it won't effect their numbers as bad because they log so many innings. MikeO is right, unless Papelbum doesn't do something great like not blow another game or doesn't give up another run the rest of the season, with the likes of Mussina, Schilling, Wang, Verlander, Liriano, and Santana all having great seasons, I'd bet money that one of those 6 (just one) are going to keep on the pace their going over Papelbum being perfect the rest of the year!
