The Official 2006 New York Yankees Thread!

I just got back from the game and wanted just to give my thoughts. I got the tickets from my uncle who went last night but had work today and couldn't go, so I got lucky. I might have pics later depending on if I'm not to lazy to upload them to photobucket!

Thoughts...

1. Zumaya is a beast for the Tigers. I have never in my life seen a pitcher make professional hitters like the Yankees have look so bad. He was blowing the ball by guys like it was nothing and all he really threw was his fastball (at least according to the Yankees scoreboard and the 102 that kept appearing on it). This kid is serious and if the Yankees have to see him down the line late in a game, their in trouble!


2. Despite the Yankees not getting clutch hits today this line-up works the count and gets pitchers pitch counts up. Verlander wasn't bad today aside from the Damon homer but he only lasted 5 1/3 because the Yankees made him work. Despite the Yankees not getting clutch hits, that's a good sign!

3. Bruney looked good today and in control of his stuff. Proctor had me nervous cause he was getting in front of batters but then letting them back into the count by making bad pitches. He got away with walking the first batter today but usually you don't!

4. Way to many strikes outs for the Yankees today which I didn't like to see. Guys were pulling their heads out like they were getting paid to do it. I know it's hard to stay tight with Detroit throwing 3 guys with really good fastballs but the Yankees didn't look good at the plate today aside from Posada and Matsui!

5. Verlander is a good pitcher but not dominant. The Yankees beat themselves today by not inflicting more damage on him then they should have. Hats off to him today, he did the job but the Yankees beat themselves big time IMO. They got 7 hits off him and 4 walks aside from the Damon homer, he got out of every jam he got in so I can't take anything away from him!

6. Sheffield isn't hustling. On that double play no doubt about it he would have been out but he didn't bust it down the line at all. He was OK at first base but him not hustling down the line really bothered me today. Plus, I don't know what happened to the patient Sheff who used to take pitches and work counts but he's gone, and was gone before the wrist injury, at least from what I've seen this season!

7. Can't blame Moose today. Even though he blew a 3-1 lead, the Yankees offense should have given him more. He shouldn't get off free because he made some bad pitches today in counts he was ahead in but at the end of the day, he pitched well enough to win the game with this offense!

8. If your heading to the stadium, expect to park a couple of miles from the stadium and get your walk on. It's 48 bucks to park near the stadium and you can't get parking even if you have the money unless you get there real early. But I paid 20 bucks a few miles away and got my walk on. Not a big deal to me!


9. Finally this I think is the end of the line for A-Rod. And this is not my opinion cause I've made it clear I like him (even though I'm wearing thin), it's the opinion of 90% of the people at Yankee Stadium who pay their hard earned money to see him play. If anyone else made a big out today, it was "hey get em next time." When A-Rod got the big out today (and he had a few) it was "F U, you stink, we need to trade this bum, ect." Not one Yankee fan has faith in this guy and when he would come up to the plate people would basically ask who was up next or get ready for the next half of the inning. A-Rod HAS TO HAVE A BIG POST-SEASON TO STAY IN PINSTRIPES. If the Yankees win it all and he stinks it up he's gone and if the Yankees get eliminated during these playoffs and he stinks it up he's gone. There's only one way for A-Rod to stay in pinstripes and that's to have a HUGE POST-SEASON. End of story!


Sorry I took so long, I just figured I'd give a nice run down from what I saw today since I got to go to the game for free. The Yankees are going to win this series IMO though. I predicted them on my show in 4 and I'm sticking with it!
 
I was dissapointed with Shefs mobility and range at first base. I am not totally ripping him since he is just learning the position, but postseason scares me for him to make a mistake and have it come back and cost us. I know Giambi's D is suspect, but it wouldnt shock me to see him play first and have Sheff DH in an game soon.

I just don't think Sheff is going all out. I mean by running out balls and his swing looks lazy. Of everyone coming back, he concerned me the most because of his attitude. I love Sheff the player but I hate his attitude. The truth is this with Sheffield, he didn't run the ball out on a double play today and I think that's the total opposite of what has gotten the Yankees to the point their at right now which is why it is pissing me off so much. I saw Abreu run out a groundball today like he was running for his life. Why can't Sheffield do that? If the Yankees want to play like the did in 2004 and 2005 by waiting for the big homerun then they might as well call it a day. I thought this team turned the corner this season and started to get things headed towards a new direction but now with Sheffield and Matsui back I am afraid we lost some of that spunk we had. Hopefully I'm just being paranoid and I'm not even trying to say that Melky and Bernie are half the players Sheffield and Matsui are right now, I just guess I miss the spunk that Melky bought to the table and seeing Sheffield live and in person not running out a ball you know Melky would have busted down the line for (he still would have been out, but still), it's just sticking out to me!
 
IF we lose to Kenny Rogers tomorrow we deserve to get sent home. Im not worried till we are playing in an "elimination" game.

Giambi needs to play 1B and Sheff as DH. Nuff said.

i personally would like to see Bernie DH instead :splat:...Bernie is great in the postseason...
 
I'm not sure Giambi can really play 1st because of his wrist. But I agree with everyone here, if Giambi can play he should be at 1st. You can fool around with Sheffield in the season but you can't do that in the playoffs. He could cost them in a big spot due to his inexperience there.
 
i was dissapointed today...again.... in mr. torre's decisions to keep a pitcher(mussina) once again in the game ONE TOO MANY INNINGS/TOO MANY BATTERS. Detroit had no problem pulling verlander out in the middle of an at bat.
 
That was an awful loss and now we have to swat out this series insetad of cruising like we should have. Matsui misplayed the thames ball which led to a run and the lead for det, Mosse was typical big game Moose- not bad, not great will always keep his team and the opponent in the game, the bats went silent in big spots once again led by mr. clutch who since game 5 of the 2004 ALCS is 4 for 35(.114) w/ ZERO RBI(10 games).
 
I think the Yankee bats should overwhelm Rogers. Verlander is a one of a kind pitcher, the fact he pitched well vs NY shows his greatness at only 23 years old.

I wouldn't be shocked if tonights game turns into a 13-9 or 14-10 type of run-fest with Randy and his bad back and me having no confidence in Rogers to do anything.
 
I think the Yanks have no problem taking it tonight. Traditionally if they Yankees lose a game they aren't supposed to, then come back the next night and beat the living crap out of the team. I agree with MikeO, a run-fest type of game is to be expected....

You took the words right out of my mouth. I was going to write that in my thoughts on the game post but forgot. Your absolutley 100 percent right that Matsui misplayed that ball Thames hit. Melky would have gotten that ball fairly easily IMO. Everyone was giving him props for holding Thames to a single on that play (at the stadium at least) but I looked at the guy next to me and we both said the same thing....."Melky would have caught that ball!"

Finally Joe Torre makes a gutty move (and the right one). As I said, it's not that I don't like Sheffield but the fact is he doesn't bust it every play like you need to do in the playoffs. Let's just say yesterday on the DP ball he hit that one of the fielders bobbled the ball. Him busting it or not is the difference between a player being out or safe in that situation. This is good Karma for the Yankees tonight and I am happy as hell that Bernie is playing tonight. It's going to be good to see a familiar face!
