This is the time of year to familiarize your guys with new positions to cover for injuries. With sooooooooo many positions unsettled, we are going to have our share of bumps 8n the road.
To me, most of the players have little to no positional flexibility. Garner and maybe Fox aside, we K ow where people play.
Albert is our LT if healthy. No better place for him. Colledge has played his entire career at LG ... we aren't about to switch him now. James is our RT unless Albert gets hurt. Those 3 are locked. Pouncey, when he returns, is our center. Until Pouncey returns, Satele is our C. That's 4 of the 5 positions set. Only RG is up for grabs.
Smith was slated for RG ... and IMHO still is. He is a strong run blocker and poor pass protector, so RG is his spot. He lacks the pass pro to play LT, RT or even RG honestly. His difficulty snapping has also crossed off playing C, where he honestly would have been a decent fit.
Turner is long armed and raw. The arms suggest LT, RT or LG, but the lack of technique prevents him from playing either OT. Similarly, it would be a big ask to start him on the same side as James, who himself should be helped out by a veteran.
Turner has a lot of potential. Heavy hands, long arm, some agility, and when he gets his technique improved hell show that he has some sand in his pants as well. But the OL is ALL about technique. Without it, you cannot succeed.
