i think its a matter of balance


if all you are is a hard nose pr!ck, then **** wont work....you have to let people know when they are doing the right thing and the wrong thing.....when players/people do the wrong thing, they know whats coming

its also a matter of presentation...when coughlin first stepped in NY, i think he was strictly strict and people didnt like it...we havent heard any of the sort from our camp so i think Nick is doing it the right way..
 
I am a little suprised. I personally think that if it wasn't so against the grain that Ronnie would have been in camp already even without a contract. He seems to be a real humble, hard working, down to earth guy. Saban's comments were probably a subtle message but also just venting at the media cause he doesn't care for their BS. They ask the dumbest questions. What is really difficult is that Ronnie was #2 overall but at this point he does not deserve to be the highest paid player none the less running back on our team (until he proves himself). THat is one of my pet peeves about the draft. Alex Smith has a huge upside but 22mil for a player who hasn't even thrown a pass in the NFL? What if he turns into the second coming of Ryan Leaf?
 
Ronnie Brown is holding out, Nick Saban is making it evident that they are not going to wait around for him. So far Ricky is looking incredible and with our passing game Lamar Gordon and Kay Jay Harris should be servicable for the first three games. Ronnie Brown could be a star but not until he signes his contract and gets his *** on the field
 
Saban played that great. I don't see anything insulting about it. I have no doubt that (coupled with all the press RW received) Brown and his agent have a little more urgency to get that contract done today than they did yesterday.

This isn't college, you can't treat the players like they are in college. The hardass thing will only get you so far, because the players are going to be around long after coaches if the coach dosn't do well.

as far as i know, brown is still a college player being that he's yet to take part in an nfl snap.

If I'm Ronnie here's what I'm thinking." I can hold out as long as I need to. Sure, they have Ricky and he's running well in Camp....But, they spent a #2 overall pick on me for a reason. It doesn't matter if Ricky starts running like Walter Payton. Because, I have four games where I know I'm better than anyone else they have and Ricky can't play. So, I'll hold out and then play my *** off those first four games of the season. After that, he'll be nothing but my change of pace back. Or, he'll be getting pounded when they put me in as receiver and catch all the TD's!"

I'm pretty sure that there is a league rule that doesn't allow any player to participate in training camp without being under contract.

In the past players have taken insurance policies out to participate in practices when they didn't have a contract. It's nothing I've seen recently, but I don't know that the rules have changed.

I don't know the rules exactly, but I think there's some type of insurance thing rookies sign in order to participate in mini-camps, but I think training camp is different. I've never heard of player reporting to training camp without a contract. Do you remember any players specifically?

No I don't. The reason I said practices was b/c I knew for sure about minicamps, but didn't remember any TC instances. I figure if a player was motivated he could sign a min. contract with an out if the final deal wasn't completed by a certain date. Add an insurance policy and the player would be protected. The contract would also solve any salary cap implications and as long as things were resolved by cutdown days it should be alright. Who knows, I'm just guessing.

If thats how you feel then do I have a coach for you!!!. Several years experience as an NFL assistant and head coach, coordinator for a championship defense, considered the ULTIMATE players coach. Best of all, no tampering compensation would have to be paid because he is currently the head coach of a college team.

Saban was well within his rights to say what he did. The Miami Dolphins had just held a practice. Technically, Ronnie Brown is not yet a Miami Dolphin. Why would Saban talk about a guy who is not part of the team when players that ARE on the team had just given performances worth reporting.

Exactly!!! When Brown gets here and starts getting reps.. I'll start caring more about him. Right now hes all about the $$$$.... not about the football.

Once here I'll be excited.. not till then

I dont think Nick likes this whole rookie contract holdout thing. With the amount of money he is going to get anyway, do you think Nick thinks he should be here. He may be pissed b/c they offered him a contract in the ballpark of what was expected. I would think that they offered him more than last years # 2 and Ronnie still refused.

This is something that Nick is going to have to get used to, and he may not ever get used to it.

What do you think Ronnies thoughts were?

Just a ploy used by ALL coaches on holdouts...it'll happen...but the one position that will require less "adjustment" time (from college to pros) is RB...long as he knows the playbook...
