Ireland just said that Philbin has 100% authority to hire his coaches. We will see, but he's on the record now.
Oh, I don't put a lot of stock into it. Earlier in the thread you will see where I criticize Armando and the lack of trust I have in his reporting. I'm just saying that if this is the case, my opinion is as such.
To your point: Canceling an interview to focus on the potential job is fine. Canceling the interview and then telling people you did it because you're the front runner is another thing, which is what was reported. If you don't agree with what was reported, you have the right to make a statement refuting it. I don't recall McCoy doing that, but I also haven't looked very deep. If you did indeed go tell people you were the front runner, and you don't win the job, don't go complaining about why you didn't win it. If I recall, Philbin basically said one thing: If he's offered the job, he's taking it. I think that is one reason he is now the head coach.
Yeah I definately see your point.
My whole thing is that I don't think Mccoy thinking he was the frontrunner should affect whether the dolphins pick him as the coach or not. And I don't think it did. If I think someone is the best guy for the job than I'm not going to go for a lesser coach just because my first option is cancelling interviews because he thinks he's going to get the job.
In the end, I think the dolphins just went with who they felt was the best.
I agree with you. My only complaint is that McCoy apparently went out and starting whining. If he just showed his appreciation and moved on, we wouldn't be having this discussion. I also feel that the Dolphins went with who they felt was best, and surprisingly (after recent, uhm, lapses) I agree with them. Philbin may not work out, but I do think he deserves his chance.
who the hell knows. I trust not one word out of anybody in our organizations mouth nor do I trust a so called spurned coach. Im pretty sure none of us will ever know the truth
I could twist something and make the case that Philbin sounded weak and pathetic when he thought the Dolphins wouldn't call him back based on how poorly the Packers performed against the Giants. McCoy seems like the self confident type who didn't flinch after the Patriots' rout of Denver.
Agreed. I haven't been posting on Finheaven for a year or more and I'd largely forgotten about wobbly self serving guesswork until sampling this thread. I was reading one post after another, thinking, I'd like to bet against that being true, and that, and...

Regardless, I will take issue that Philbin "earned" the job while names like McCoy and Toub were gimmick reaches. That's exactly the opposite of the way I look at it. By earning something in conventional wisdom terms it means you trudged along, up the ranks like an unremarkable determined overachiever. There's nothing more boring on the planet than an overachiever. If I ran a franchise I'd put a quota on overachievers, and it would be next to nil. Give me guys who were prodigies, the first pick at every turn, who vaulted supposedly more qualified and experienced candidates at a flick without looking back or even noticing. I want brilliance. And it's even better when brilliance is ignorantly downgraded, like the rips on Reggie Bush the past few years. Al Davis in his prime took advantage of that for decades. And hired young arrogant coaches.
