The Ricky Williams Scholarship

Im not against Ricky Williams. But it states that he is the model for this scholarship. My question is how is a guy who has publicly failed drug tests for marijuana and up and quits on his football team out of no where a role model for a scholarship.

Could be worse..they could make a Donte Stallworth, Michael Vick, Plaxico Burress or Matt Jones Scholarship.

When you look at it like that...makes what Ricky did very minimal.

goonboss:rimshot:

people who live in glass houses...
do we really need this trash & bash?
who amongst us hath not ...
are you going to throw the first stone?
the guy has done a good thing, not a bad thing.
think about it :D

this is a good thing, not a bad thing

Who died and made you "forum boss?"

Freind X-Pacolypse:
I did not want to continue commenting on a thread of this nature.
However, because you are someone I hold in esteem I will clarify my position for you.

I posted:

And that is exactly what I meant to say. Need not read anything into that post that is not there.
I simply think:
1) everyone is entitled to their beliefs, not entitled to impose those beliefs on others. that's why we have the separation of Church & State.
2) I don't like hypocrisy.
3) there are no bosses here. this is a football forum not a job. we all know the rules. when we break one, we are pointed by one of the PM's.
4) PM's are board members with more responsibilities than the average poster and I, for one, am grateful for the volunteer work they do. wouldn't be much of a board w/o them.

having said all that, once they sport a post on the board it is fair play to engage it, no different than any other post.

I revisited this thread & made these comments only out of respect & friendship to you.
I don't care who posts what from here on in or what is said or misrepresented. I am through with the Ricky Bashing & unfortunately, through with what started out a reasonable thread.:hump:

When I quit my paperboy job I gave them a weeks notice, when did Ricky tell Miami he wasn't coming back?

Also if you don't know the legal status of pot you should look it up before commenting on it. Cali has medical marijuana. In denver its legalized, they even had a billboard up trying to get Ricky to come to Denver for a whiler, look it up. And in many other states it is decriminalized, such as my home state of Massachusetts. As long as you dont have over an ounce or marijuana on you or multiple baggies(distribution) you get away with usually nothing and sometimes $100 fine.

Also I wanted to add, Ricky suffers from an anxiety disorder (remember he kept his helmet on during interviews?) The fact that pot is illegal in the NFL is what keeps him from getting a legal prescription most likely. But the point is he was using it for a legitamite problem.

Ricky Williams seems to be an intelligent human being - arguably too intelligent to be happy in professional football - who has a definite plan for what happens after he's finished playing. You'd be amazed how few players do. The vast, vast majority of retired players either bank on getting a job as an analyst or squander everything on retarded investments.

He's working on a college degree that's actually worth a damn. His recreational reading consists of the Bible and medical textbooks. When he retires, he plans on opening up his own clinic.

So why isn't Ricky Williams a good model for a scholarship?

Playing by the NFL's rules seems to be the opposite of what you'd expect from a scholar (i.e. scraping through school with NCAA loopholes designed to allow students with sports scholarships to graduate without even trying, or entering the draft in your junior year and forgoing a college degree altogether). He played that game. Unlike most athletes, he seems to be disgusted by that choice.

All I know is, I don't want my kids to rip themselves off like that.

You may not like Ricky Williams. But he left football in order to learn about things that football made him miss out on when he was younger. If you resent him for that, then you're a small man.

My point is this: he's smart enough to realize that there are things in life that are more important than football. Which probably makes him a heck of a lot smarter than all of you.

Scholarship Representative

I do drink, but...

How is a guy like this representative of a scholorship?

I have read about the Ricky Williams Scholarship. In fact, you too can read all about it here at the scholarship founders site:

amcollege dot edu/rickywilliams.htm

I notice that the scholarship is academia based and therefore it looks like Goonboss wouldn't be eligible for it, because recipients would at least know how to spell "scholarship" before they bash one.

The next time you get a Heisman Trophy, Goon, maybe someone will honor you some extra recognition.

Forgive me if I'm not heartbroken that an accupuncture school won't name a scholarship for me. I also won't leave kids out of wedlock scattered about the country. I also won't value weed above my family and my job. If that's the guy you want your kids to pattern themselves on, that's fine. I'm not.

good news on ricky is better then bad news
he has been good lately on and off the field

Ricky is my favorite player for the Fins. My family knows it, and I have always caught crap for it. Hell even when I bought my Daughter (now almost 3) a Ricky Williams jersey my Uncle decided to make a comment "Did that jersey come with an ounce?". I think Ricky had his own problems with phobia's, being rushed 40 times a game, etc. If I was in his shows I can not say that I would not have retired early from the NFL either, maybe I would have done it a little better way then he did but that is the way he decided to handle it. That said I did not lose any respect for the guy or think less of him. And you know what, he came back and the Tuna himself thought he was the best guy he had in TC last year, and I think that is saying a lot. I think the Tuna will keep him around as long as Ricky is able to be a spellback.

He has not caused harm to anyone or cheated to become a better athlete.

Do you have a drink from time to time?
Every bit as much of a drug....actually more.
The poor guy gets raked over the coals in interviews about pot time after time.

This is a game of football and we are not talking about roids here.

I agree with you but the only thing that made RW stupid is that he knew he was going to be tested and still continued to smoke MJ. Now I don't agree with the NFL's policy here and actually thing weed should be legalized but it's still stupid when you know it's a banned substance in the NFL and you Know you'e going to get tested but you keep doing it. I have a few drinks from time to time, hell I get down right drunk on occasion but my job doesn't test for alchohol every monday.

Thinking...Some people should do it more. I agree.

GoonBoss I normally find your posts very insightful and entertaining, but on this subject I couldn't disagree more. So know that I mean no disrespect with my reply.

Ricky Williams is a very intelligent man. Has he made mistakes in his life? Sure. Which one of us can honestly say he hasn't? The important part of Ricky's mistakes is that he's learned from them. Since he's been reinstated he has been getting drug tested randomly once a month. He has yet to fail one of these tests. He realizes that football is not the most important thing in life, and he's dedicated much of his life in an attempt to achieve enlightenment and become a better human being. You can say he was a crappy teammate, which would not come without reason, but many of the phins players have gone public with saying that he is now a great teammate.

He may not be your typical NFL football player, but for that reason he is my favorite player. So what if he marches to a different beat than the most, maybe he hears his own drummer. And following your heart should not be something people are disrespected for.

As to calling him a "drugy" I think that is childish and below your intelligence. Name calling is something people resort to when they have nothing intelligent to say. First off the only thing Ricky has ever done is marijuana, which should not even be considered a drug, and is definitely not performance enhancing so I'm not even sure why the NFL is against it to begin with. It is not harmful and yet the NFL see it fit for players to smoke tobacco or drink alcohol? Both of which are much more harmful and detrimental to our society.

As I said Ricky is a very intelligent man who knows what he wants to do with his life which is much more than what most people in our world can say. He appears to be a very kind and humble human being. This, to me, is enough to warrant the Ricky Williams Scholarship Fund. Or should we give it to a player who slipped through the crack and got a college degree due to a flaud schooling system and a football scholarship?

I'm not going to get fully engaged in the convo. I respect your your take on this. Really. If you buy that whole "Different drummer" bull****, then that's on you. Ricky Williams is a head case. If he doesn't want to play football, then, he shouldn't play football. Nobody MADE him play football.

Don't try to paint this guy like he's some sort of genius...
