I haven't posted her in quite a while, but after watching the first preseason game and seeing the reaction here on the board I felt the need to make a point about this preseason and really the season in general. This year isn't like the last 12/13 years since Marino retired where we are forced to over-analyze details in the preseason and pretend that what we see give us insight into the upcoming season. I don't care that our team looked flat yesterday. I'm not worried that Philbin, though obviously a football-smart man, seems too similar to Cam Cameron for comfort. I'm not worried that our organization seems dysfunctional from top to bottom. I'm not worried about our owner, or our prick GM. I'm not worried that we are the laughingstock of the NFL. You get the point.
Disagree with any of those sentiments if you want, but in reality this really is the year of Tannehill. For the first time since Marino left, we have invested in the most important position in football. If the last decade has taught us anything, it should have taught us to never underestimate the importance of the quarterback position.
The truth is, if Tannehill pans out, Philbin becomes a success story, Ross gets credit for turning around the organization, the team Ireland has built starts to look like a team full of weapons and we finally become relevant again.
And after a couple of weeks, I couldn't be happier with Tannehill. His on the field performance has been great and he has everything you look for in a quarterback. This isn't John Beck, who was smart and we crossed our fingers regarding everything else. This isn't Pat White. This is a guy who by every measure has what it takes to be an NFL quarterback, and after two weeks he defintely looks the part.
So, this preseason, focus on Chad Johnson or Philbin or the our defense if you want, but I'll be focusing on number 17 because if he is what we hope he is, everything else will work out just fine.
