This is how close the top 9 players in the draft are rated

Says who, the draft chart that Jimmy made up. Again because the chart says so, this is what you do. A coach/GM isn't smart enough to decide by themselves what is better for the team in the long run? You are talking players with equal value, not players with a huge gap.

Well I like Benson, Brown and Williams and have them all rated the same so I really don't care which I get, oh wait a team wants to offer me a 2nd round pick to drop a few spots and still be able to have one of my equal value players. Let's see what the chart says, oops nope the chart says no way, guess I can't do it. Man and I really liked xxx player that I could have gotten with that 2nd round pick.

Sorry I don't see it. If they are set on somebody like Smith and they know if they trade down they will not get him or somebody with equal value to the team then yes I see the pick having value to the team, but if your trading down and getting what you want anyway then I say the more picks the better.

This goes the same for what Rodgers is going through right now, the rules say he should be paid a percentage more then last years #1, so now he's offered less then that and says "no that is not aceptable, the rules say I should be getting x% more." Now he drops dow to at least 5 if not further and loses millions of dollars, but that is ok because he stuck to the rules.

Maybe I am a sucker but if I had to chose to take exactly what the #1 pick got last year and what the #5 pick will get this year, I am swallowing my pride and counting the extra millions in my bank account, I would then make them pay when it was time to renegotiate.

Rules and charts are there for guidelines not to follow to the letter.

One could also take more lower picks than just two high picks...even a pick for next year....it doesn't have to be just two first round picks. Nothing is written in stone...you trade for whats best for the team...not what fans think.

Amen, and amen.

If we can still get one of the players we want, and pick up a second, that is huge.

May I remind KB that Surtain, AND Madison were second round picks. I would say that both those guys are first round talents, and so who cares if we move from 2nd to 5, 6, or 7th? Between Benson, Brown, and Caddy one of those guys will be there.

Fortunately, Nick Saban cares. He's the one making the decision. He's the one that is going by the value chart.

Of course. So you take less than the pick is worth, and you get laughed out of the league.

Nick Saban has already stated more than once that he will go by the value chart. I'm sure glad he and not some of you is the GM. Hell, we would have already traded Patrick Surtain for a 4th round pick and dealt the second pick for far less than value if some of you were running things.

Nobody said to just throw away the pick, but at 12:29 if that was the best offer then yes I would take it, as far as Surtain goes no I would not take a 4th I would almost rather cut him, If I knew for sure he wouldn't be on the team then I guess I would have to take what I can get but wouldn't be happy about it.

As far as getting laughed out of the league, again you are all about saving face and not bold enough to make your own decision. I would not care what the rest of the league thought, my concern is my team. If it is for the benefit of the team then I make my decision accordingly, the rest of the league will learn the next time, if it isn't to the teams benefit that they will not get what they are after.

Sometimes you give, sometimes you take. Decsions should be made selfishly.

You keep replying with the chart says the chart says, you have yet to address some of the points that I have made regarding you are losing nothing, but gaining an extra player and some much needed cap relief.

NFL Draft showcase top 10....everyone including "experts" have vast opinions...but again...the only opinion that counts is Saban's.

1 Derrick Johnson LB Texas

2 Braylon Edwards WR Michigan

3 Mike Williams WR USC

4 Antrel Rolle CB Miami

5 Ronnie Brown RB Auburn

6 Mark Clayton WR Oklahoma

7 Shawne Merriman DE Maryland

8 Aaron Rodgers QB California

9 Alex Barron OT Florida State

10 Alex Smith QB Utah

LOL...so in your mind, sticking with that number two pick (which gets us the same value as a number 7 pick) is better than picking up a second?

I think it's more that he believes in the value chart and following it religiously.

You can't seem to understand that you are losing something. You are losing the value of the 2nd pick. It doesn't matter that there are several good players that are available. The value of the second pick is what it is, and I'm glad that Nick Saban isn't going to trade that pick just for the sake of trading the pick.

If Minnesota wants the pick, then THEY WILL give us the 7th pick, the 18th pick, and a mid round pick. That's what the value of the 2nd pick is. To trade down from 2 to 7 and only get a 2nd round pick in return is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE!!

I believe it's more than that....at 2 Smith is available...at 7...he's not.

The three running backs aren't equal. They all have their flaws and moving down 5 spots is like caving in, just for an extra second round pick. In fact, didn't the Browns or some team trade up ONE spot and gave away a second round pick in the process. While we could be moving down three to five spots more, yet we only would take a second. I disagree and I think if we trade down, we go by the chart, because if the value of the draft isn't very high, doesn't that average out ALL the value of the draft picks from 1st to 7th? We should still go by the value chart because hey, I don't wanna get screwed over like we have been the past five years or so!!

Not just in my mind, but in Nick Saban's mind as well.

I don't need to understand the value of the pick, I will look at the overall value of the players when all is said and done, in my mind I have gained. I have two starters, that equal more in value then the one starter I would have picked. One with the exact same value as the #2 and another that is a bonus, for doing nothing more then waiting 3 picks to take my player. Along with some extra cash to maybe keep Suratin and not have to accept a 4th for him.

Keith...first...you have no idea what has or hasn't been offered...so whats your problem? If the Vikes offer the 7th, 49th, 120th, 191st and next years first...you would be unhappy? There's nothing thats say's it has to be any certain way for value...as long as the value of the picks are close. Thats up to the Dolphins...take it easy.

Then you have missed out on the whole point of what I am saying, I said straight out if Smith is who you want then you don't trade or if you do it better be worth it. If a RB is what you want and they are all considered equal then you make the trade.
