Time to drop some dead weight off the ship...

I understand your point, but you'll have to understand if I'm more comfortable letting Saban make those decisions, I'm betting he knows a little more about it than we do.

I'm confident that when he's seen enough he'll take the proper action.

Amen.

Here's an added reason to drop off the dead weight now instead of in 3 weeks: You'll give young guys like Bryan Gilmore, Travis Daniels and a veteran like Marty Booker more opportunities.
Thompson dropping a pass, or Howard getting burn isn't just detrimental to the individual in question, it's also detrimental to the team, who could actually be developing a player at the position.
Howard and Thompson are well past that stage. Time to get 'em off the boat.

Yeah and if it wasn't for that one catch, no one would defend him.

What does two photos of the Patriots committing pass interference prove?

Pass Interference? He dropped the ball. That should be obvious.

your know, I've been rooting for Howard since we signed him and even more so when we traded Surtain but after watching this last preseason game I'm not "touting" him any longer. I'm still rooting for him since he has such a big contract but he's just didn't look good. Since it was just one preseason game I'm not going to go overboard and say he needs to be cut just yet...yet. He's got the perfect size and attitude for this defense but we'd only have to carry 750k after we cut him but and drops 2.25mil from the cap. Of course I don't know what effect if would have over the next couple years though.

Lee, other than that one pass, I thought he played fairly well. All the camp reports said he was dropping everything but I think his major problem is still going to be the mental errors. If he can solve those then I think he's worth keeping around. If not.....

Thompson, just like years past, great practice player....sucks in games. he just may be one of those guys who can't handle TV and playing in front of crowds. For me, he would not be missed.

2 guys who I thought played well we Diamond (of course) and also the new guy, Kris Richard. If Diamond shows the consistancy that the team is looking for he's got a very good chance. Richard...seemed to be around the ball a lot. He may have made some mistakes but I can't remeber any off the top of my head. I've just got a feel that he also has a decent shot at the team considering our current depth.

I put this in another thread but one guy who's going to struggle to make the team this year is Bua. He's simply not fast enough right now and I'm not sure if Saban's going to keep too many guys on the roster just because they are good at ST. Especially since word is out that we've been talking to Mike Brown another safety who's a good run safety and about average in coverage (why does Saban keep bringing in run stopping safeties who can't cover very good?) he's on the edge I believe.

From those photos, you can't tell if the ball every made it to him before getting tackled. Both were double coverage. Is that the best you can do?

Well you know someone was going to do this.

I goggled "passes dropped statistics" and found a link to this site. I can't vouch for their acuracy but DT doesn't make the list, which is probably more to do with him not getting enough passes thrown his way then anything else. But guess who comes in at #4 and # 14 in the AFC.

we don't want numbers, we have opinions! one person even suggested that we have a majority of die hard fans sharing an opinion!

Oh. See, I thought if you all voted me the arbiter of such things, I could go ahead and make that decision for the team.

*sarcasm*

We're just tossing ideas around and venting here. We're all fans of the team, soem more emotional than others. I personally have a low threshold for mistakes that are born of lack of focus or concentration, rather than lack of ability.

This board is a great outlet for those things.

Most of the top receivers in the NFL are on that list. Compare the number of dropped passes to caught passes. Thompson had 4 dropped passes last season with only 23 catches. That isn't a very good percentage. He's been dropping passes ever since he came into the NFL. He had this same problem in Washington.

i agree, but it's a little silly when some casually dismiss what dissenters have to say. of course, it's the way life works now, "my-way-or-the-highway."

i do think that of the people you mentioned, thompson and lee are in danger. how many WR's make it out of these 4? 2-3? all 4? they have thompson, boston, gilmore, and welker. welker seems like he has to make it. then what? it's tough. the rest have to step up in the preseason.

Thank you. and that's all I was saying; make room for guys who will be able to help us, stop keeping the personnel failures of the past.

IMO, with Linehan at OC we keep 5 WR's in order to have some flexibility - or more accurately, to have less predictability in the passing game.
